Aquamarine 1/8 Rise Kujikawa

victorviper4 meses atrásReview
I am a Persona fan, and I also like rhythm games, so naturally I played Persona 4: Dancing All Night. Rise Kujikawa is my favorite Persona 4 girl, and when I played Dancing All Night I openly wished for a figure of her in one of her optional costumes. The figure gods subsequently provided, and so today we'll be reviewing Aquamarine's figure of Rise in her "Arabian Armor" costume. This is not some 18+ figure, but there might be an NSFW shot or two lurking below...

About the character: Rise Kujikawa is a main character from Persona 4. Rise is an emerging idol who, burned out from the demands of that career path, decides to move back to her hometown of Inaba. In-game, Rise serves in a support capacity, helping the team locate people who go missing in the mysterious TV world and assisting with the navigation of the various dungeons in the game.

In the rhythm game sequel Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Rise has returned to the entertainment business, and she invites her friends from Inaba to a music festival. As it happens, members of an idol group at the festival have gotten trapped in the "Midnight Stage", not unlike the Midnight Channel from the original game, and so the Inaba crew will have to put their dancing skills to the test to save the group...

Packaging----------8/10

Aquamarine goes for an all-plastic box. It allows for a good view of Rise, and the gold highlights make for an attractive looking package. I'm guessing if you saw a bank of these somewhere on a store shelf, it would be a really impressive looking display!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1496524414.jpeg

There is a cardboard insert in the back panel with various shots of Rise.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1496524416.jpeg

It's certainly an attractive looking package, but a problem with these all-plastic boxes is that once the figure is removed, they no longer look quite so impressive. You can see there's quite a bit of space inside the box, and so the box is fairly large for a 1/8 scale figure, measuring 26 by 19 by 17 cm. The whole package weighs just under 600 grams.

Base----------7.5/10

The bold bright purple color scheme of the base will catch the eye and it also nicely complements the figure, but the base is not without some concerns. A single peg attaches Rise to the base, which always worries me just a little bit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1496524418.jpeg

As you can see, when Rise is attached to the base, her left foot just barely makes contact with the base's surface, and a result I observed a significant amount of figure wobble when I was moving her around to take photographs. I don't *think* there's any concern about leaning, but you never know. It would have been better IMO for Aquamarine to place a wedge of plastic under Rise's other foot with a second peg.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231708.jpeg

While Rise is not a large figure, the base is fairly large, measuring approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter.

Posing----------9/10

Rise's pose is based on an illustration by Persona 4 character designer Shigenori Soejima PICTURE #1471811. In Dancing All Night, each character has several different unlockable outfits, and one of Rise's outfits is the harem-themed "Arabian Armor". Aquamarine describes her getup as "an elegant yet rather revealing outfit with intricate accessories", and that's a pretty good description. In fact, when you equip Rise with the outfit in-game she will alternately respond either by acting slightly embarrassed or by saying "sure, I can do a little fan service".

So, without further adieu let's have a look a her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231710.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231712.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231714.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231716.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231744.jpeg

Overall, Aquamarine was quite successful in bringing that illustration into figure form, and the way parts of Rise's outfit are flailing around her body, a sense of movement is effectively conveyed.

The only possible complaint about Rise's pose involves the fact that she is subtly leaning over. This means that Rise kind of needs to be displayed either at or above eye level for optimal viewing. You can see that her face is somewhat obscured when she's viewed from above, so if you'd planned on displaying Rise on a low shelf, you might need to do some figure rearranging...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231748.jpeg

In any event, it's quite a neat pose and it duplicates the original illustration nicely, so I'd say that Aquamarine did just fine on this front.

Sculpting----------9/10
Painting----------9.5/10

Overall, Aquamarine did quite a nice job with this figure. Generally, the paint and sculpt are excellent, but there are a couple of quirks of which would-be buyers might want to be aware.

Generally the sculpt stays faithful to the original illustration PICTURE #1471811 although comparing this shot and the illustration makes it clear that figure Rise is covering up a little more of her face than is her counterpart in the illustration.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1496524472.jpeg

When the first promo shots of this figure were released there was some concern about the design of Rise's eyes; in particular the worry was that her eyes appeared to be flat and lifeless. However, in person I think they look quite nice and Aquamarine did a fine job translating Soejima's illustration into figure form.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231750.jpeg

One of Rise's most notable features is her large twin ponytails, and as you can see, she has lots of texture in her hair. Her hair is pretty flat in color, but for dark brown hair that is pretty par for the course. Note the detail on her shoulder blades; that's one of my favorite small figure details :).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231752.jpeg

Note the braiding in her hair. I guess to make that happen, Rise would have had to put her hair up in ponytails, then braid those pieces of hair, and finally wrap the braids around her ponytails and pin them into place? That's some pretty complicated hairstyling!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231782.jpeg

The painting on her fingerless gloves is pretty crisp. All the gold parts on the figure might be a cause for concern, however. Gold paint on figures seems extremely prone to oxidization, and so part of me wonders if in a year or two you'll be seeing a bunch of C-grade preowned Rises with color fade on the various gold parts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231784.jpeg

The pink-to-purple-to-blue color gradient on her outfit looks really cool in person and it effectively gives the impression that the fabric is made of a very light material! Also, presumably the gold parts of her outfit are made of metal, and as a result, Rise's top seems to be quite snug-fitting...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231788.jpeg

If you look carefully at some of the previous shots, you might notice that Rise's necklace was actually on backwards (with the jeweled part on the back of her neck) when the figure was unboxed. I didn't even notice until I started looking close at these photos...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497303976.jpeg

Rise's huge earrings are another cool feature of this outfit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231790.jpeg

The gold tassels on Rise's outfit are in keeping with the harem theme and they complement its blue and purple color scheme nicely, but you can see that some of the tassels clump together a little bit in places.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231848.jpeg

Aquamarine did a really nice job sculpting Rise's leggings! All the texture in the leggings convincingly simulates the appearance of a very lightweight material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231850.jpeg

At first, I thought that the symbols on Rise's outfit were just circles and stars, but looking up close, they are stars and little hearts! Not only is that a cute little flourish, but it might be a nod to the fact that Rise's persona is of the Lovers arcana and that she openly expresses affection for the main character in Persona 4. Either that, or I'm overthinking it way too much :).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231852.jpeg

Generally, Aquamarine did a fine job sculpting Rise, and the worst sculpting defect I could really find was this messy spot where the metal waistband of her leggings and the fabric meet..

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231854.jpeg

...which brings us to an interesting point. In-game, the leggings on this outfit are extremely low-rise and it is clear that Rise is wearing gold g-string panties underneath. However, this figure has the leggings sit somewhat higher on her body. I wonder if this was a deliberate choice to not ecchify the figure too much? Who knows...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497303974.jpeg

It looks like Aquamarine kept the g-string design, but neither the metal band nor the leggings themselves can be moved around.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198713.jpeg

The straps of her panties are actually sculpted as opposed to just being carved out of her torso, so that's a nice small touch.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231856.jpeg

Aquamarine also did a nice job sculpting Rise's feet. Her toes are well-differentiated and I like that her toenails are painted. That's a feature that's easy to pass over.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497231877.jpeg

Scale Comparison

The figure is about 7.5 inches (19 cm) in height, and given how Rise is leaning over a little bit, I estimate that she'd be approximately 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall if she were standing. Since her height is established to be 5'1" (155 cm), this would put her towards the large side of 1/8 scale.

Rin Kagamine ITEM #149559 and Rise are two of my favorite characters. At first, I thought that the tape measure would say that Rise would be at the small end of 1/8 scale, but that was not the case. Rin and Rise are quite similar in terms of their overall stature and you can see how Rise compares to the 1/7 scale Rin.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198776.jpeg

Rise with Rise in her standard outfit from Dancing All Night. Sega's ITEM #287797 is also 1/8-ish in scale and so although Aquamarine's offering is in fact 1/8, you can see that the way she's leaning over might make her *look* a little smaller than that on the shelf.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198821.jpeg

That's not a shadow, that's just Elyse ITEM #5864 who is also 1/8 scale for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198926.jpeg

Hatsune Miku is a DLC character in Dancing All Night, as there is some nonempty intersection between the team who developed that game and the staff of Project Diva; plus, I think Rise and this Miku look really good together. Miku ITEM #236245 is 1/8 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198963.jpeg

Maryan ITEM #61395 is also a dancer but in a more traditional RPG sense. She is 1/8 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497198985.jpeg

For some reason, I also like how Rise and Yayoi Takatsuki ITEM #166952 look together. Since the Inaba crew helps save an idol group in Dancing All Night, it would have been neat to do a crossover and have some of the iDOLM@STER characters make cameos. Yeah, like that would happen...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497199045.jpeg

Rise with one of my favorite underrated figures, Akane Suzumiya ITEM #1179 who is also in dance (samba) mode. Akane is on the small side of 1/7 scale, and you can see how she and Rise compare.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1497489488.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: The figure nicely duplicates Soejima's illustration, the blue, pink, and purple color scheme is very eye-catching and the outfit gives off a very elegant feel, overall good quality.

Arguments against: The base does not seem too sturdy, the gold tassels on her outfit get a little clumpy in spots, and I hope all the gold painted parts on the figure don't prematurely fade in color as such things are prone to do.

When I play Dancing All Night, this outfit is pretty much Rise's perma-costume, and so I vowed to buy a figure of Rise in this costume assuming one ever got made. Fortunately, my wish came true and Aquamarine has made quite a great figure here. If you're a member of Risette's fan club, I'd say you need this figure in your collection.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more figures get made from Dancing All Night; there's Rise's "Devilish Dress", Chie's track outfit, Kanji's butler outfit, the blue bellman costumes for just about any of the characters, and I could probably go on all day...

Availability (as of this writing)

Easy to find.

I was a bit surprised to see that each of the big three (AmiAmi, HLJ, Hobby Search) shops still had Rise listed as available two weeks after release. Thus, if you don't dawdle, you should have no problem sourcing your very own Rise. MSRP is 14800 yen, but more like 13000 and some change should do it if you're a savvy shopper. I'll be interested to see what happens to the price of this figure once stores' initial stock sells through.

Maakie (4 meses atrás) #22479870This is a very nice figure, but I still have a few things that bug me. Although the posing of her hand doesn't bother me as much as other people have said on the figure's page, I dislike how it obstructs so much from her face and it makes her mouth look more wide than it actually is. Also I think that the high details mainly show when you get reaaallly up close with this figure. From a distance she looks like a huge woosh of cloth (which is also cool in some way I guess xD). Thanks for this review!

I agree that they should have kept the position of her hand they way it was in the illustration, as it does cover up too much of her face.

In game, many of Rise's animations feature her swooshing around those scarves/sashes/whatever they are, and so the swooshiness is faithful to the source material :).

Rise looks gorgeous.

Thanks for the comment. If you like Rise, this is definitely a great figure of that character.

secretly-otaku (4 meses atrás) #22369635Thanks again for another great review.
Rise definitely ended up looking better than expected. It seems Aquamarine is getting its name up there among the top figure makers lately.
I'm glad that there were no issues to report regarding her eyes, as it was a concern for many once the painted version was revealed. And her being bigger than expected is a nice surprise, considering how good she look.
In my case, I was more concerned about how NSFW would she be, as there were no clear pictures of her back when pre-orders opened. That G-string could have been exploited and would have made this figure very NSFW (faithful to the source, but unsafe nonetheless). But Aquamarine actually handled this project with a lot of care and taste... and perhaps that hand could have been made differently, but That does not subtract anything to the rest of the project.
Anyway, hoping Aquamarine did something regarding the gold paint and hopefully it will stick there to last.

The Persona franchise strikes me as being a little strange when it comes to fanservice. Ever since Persona 3, there has been no shortage of fanservicey in-game events and optional costumes, but most of the Persona figures that have been made are pretty conservative in their design. In fact, with the possible exception of ITEM #520673, this Rise might be the most risque Persona figure out there (even though she's not *that* risque). Maybe it's a deliberate choice by Atlus to present the correct image of the franchise, but then again they allowed this ITEM #549411 to get made! I gave up trying to decipher corporate decision-making a long time ago...

The gold paint is probably the #1 worry about the figure. I've gotten my share of deeply discounted C-grade items because of gold color fade, but hopefully that won't happen to Rise.

Hope you get her soon :). Rise ended up exceeding my expectations; if I had it my way she would have been 1/7 or maybe even 1/6 scale. A larger-scale Rise would be epic!
