Best Proxy for Doujinshi/Tankoubons?Best Proxy for Doujinshi/Tankoubons?Ask MFC

While browsing around Rakuten, I discovered that Suruga-ya's web store actually carries a lot of older 18+ doujinshis/tankoubons that I had previously back-wishlisted cause I couldn't find them on Mandarake. After digging around some, I ended up with a shopping cart of 26 items, all under 1000 yen and with the average price of 500 yen each (since they're second hand). Since Suruga-ya doesn't do international shipping, I was wondering what would be the best proxy to use in this case?

Scenario:
- Many low-price items from one store
- Small volume-wise but heavy (paper weighs a lot!)
- Includes 18+ items

Target criteria:
- Flat fee per store (instead of per item)
- SAL shipping (or whatever's cheapest for doujinshi)
- Allows for 18+ items

For buying figures, I've always used FromJapan, but they charge a 200yen fee per item, which would essentially double the cost for many items. I've heard that Yokatta is good but their services page isn't too clear. Another proxy I'm looking into is Goody Japan that looks like they have a percent fee on the final price. There's also Tenso's forwarding service, but they ship with EMS. Lastly, I could default back to Rakuten, but not only are the base prices higher than on Suruga-ya's website, but they only ship via EMS.

On a side note, I've been under the assumption that SAL is the cheapest. Does this still hold for compact doujinshi? I remember someone saying to ship with DHL is cheaper? (to the USA). Help out this doujinshi-buying noob here please!

I was wondering the same thing with the poll options because ive tried ordering figures from the "adult" 18+ section of Amazon.co.jp and FromJapan.co.jp never lets me order figures from that part of the website, it always says that the item is no longer available or out of stock and when I contact FromJapan.co.jp to ask them about it they say its because their not allowed to export adult goods outside of the country. I have used FromJapan.co.jp to buy adult figures from Y! Japan though and havent had any issues yet but websites dont seem to work using their shopping service.

I also tried Tenso which has really low fees and gives you a Japanese mailing address to send shipments to, their fees are comparable to FromJapan.co.jp but they also have a ban on adult product exports so no 18+ items can be exported using their service.

The other alternatives like Mio Boutique, Noppin, and Big In Japan are more expensive, only Mio Boutique has reasonable prices out of those 3 but still not as low as FromJapan. I have never tried Treasure Japan before though, ill give them a shot in the future.

In the end, went with TreasureJapan. Here were the numbers:

TreasureJapan[Total price] 10868 yen
[Domestic shipping] 0 yen
[Bank transfer fee] 0 yen
[Our commission] 1086 yen
Subtotal : 11954 yen (a)
================================

[International shipping cost] (EMS 6300g) : 10700 yen (b)
================================
SUBTOTAL : 22654 yen (1) = (a+b)
International money receiving fee : 861 yen (2) = (1) x 3.8%
================================
TOTAL AMOUNT DUE : 23515 yen (3) = (1)+(2)

This invoice is based on using EMS (full insured) to send your parcel.
It takes 3-7 days to arrive.
SAL (registered ; insured up to 15170yen) is 9400 yen. It takes 1-3 weeks.
SURFACE (registered ; insured up to 15170yen) is 5100 yen. It takes 2-3 months.

Summary:
Items: 10868 yen
Shipping: 10700 yen
Fees: 1086 + 861 = 1947 yen
Total: 23515 yen

Ouch on shipping. Response rate was really slow, but their website allowed me to easily inventory everything and did allow for 18+ items. Fees were reasonable too.

For reference, here's an email reply from FromJapan:
FromJapan1. Concerning adult items, as it is hard to judge what is, and what is not an adult item, we can purchase most items as long as there are no graphic images or titles on the front of the item. Concerning when you try and order the item, could you please let us know what appears on the order form to stop you from doing this. However, it may be the case that we unfortunately, cannot order your items due to an adult nature.

2. For items purchased from the same store AND paid for in the same charge 1 form, there is an 800 Yen commission fee cap. As such, you will only have to pay the 200 Yen fee on 4 items, and then the rest would be commission fee. It is crucial that you check that this has been correctly applied before completing the charge 1 payment.

3. Delivery fees for Surugaya items are as follows:
Orders up to 1,000 Yen, Shipping is 300 Yen
Orders up to 1,800 Yen, Shipping is 250 Yen
Orders over 1,800 Yen. Shipping is free

Keripo6 anos atrás#1800714Wow, thanks for all the helpful info - Treasure Japan it is!
I've managed to trim down my list to only 20, but unfortunately, half of them are still 200p tankoubons, so I'm guessing the weight's going to go well over... >_< Any chance Treasure Japan would be willing to split it into multiple SAL shipments, or is there a better solution?

TJ is always super helpful and would happily split items into SAL boxes for you. I've used her service many times and Nahoko is always exceptionally helpful and willing to go the extra mile. She probably ends up a tiny bit more expensive but the service is second to none. Can't recommend her enough (and her packaging is amazing!) She'll likely be willing to suggest the cheapest alternative for you as well and offers lower rates for document only packages.

As mentioned by aeon, since TJ has increased in popularity she can be a little slow to get shipping invoices to you (she orders items quickly though) so keep in mind to send a reminder email to her if you don't get that invoice in a few days after placing the shipping request.

dymitr6 anos atrás#1800431I've always use a weight of 0.15 kg per 20 page B5 doujinshi and for everything more than 100 pages 1 kg. Works as a decent guideline, though It doesn't take in account things such as packaging material.
Assuming all those Small books are 20p doujinshi, you would look at a weight of roughly 4 kg.
I don't think SAL SP will be an option.

In your case, for the cheapest overall cost I think Treasure Japan treasure-japan.... would be the best choice. I generally use either them, FromJapan or CWY shop.crosswithy.... Since we're looking at a bigger quantity of items, FJ's ¥800 commission cap is tempting and would probably be the cheapest proxy fee but in the long run you'll be paying more with them (especially since they will only ship SAL SP if the value of the items are <¥6,000 so you'll need to split shipping). CWY on the other hand is good for smaller orders.

With orders over ¥10,000 TJ charges 10% for commission, can ship SAL SP (I'm going to assume you want SP in particular) but only registered and can buy 18+ as long as it's not insanely lewd. The only negative point I can think of for TJ is that they can take quite a while to respond after you send a shipping request. Other than that they are great!

Yeah like said below, the only concern I have would be whether 26 books including packaging will be too heavy for SAL SP.

Ah and not to mention that dealing with Rakuten Surugaya is likely to give you a lot of headaches.

Seconding TreasureJapan. For TJ, it is a flat commission per order and the rate depends on how much you order. With that much ordered you would be looking at 10% the total cost. Shipping costs are reasonable and the person who runs it is very nice and helpful. Definitely OK with the 18+ stuff, too. Since it is a small operation though, there is potential for delayed shipping. I'm pretty sure they send things out in a timely fashion once you've paid, but the actual packing of items could take a while if they're backed up with other orders.

I usually go with FromJapan when I order from Suruga-ya, but with the 18+ stuff you might have trouble with that one. It's in their terms that they won't proxy adult goods. I have gotten things through them that were definitely adult but they weren't explicit on the cover or anything like that, so you might be able to get away with it if you aren't ordering anything that is clearly adult? Also, although FJ has the 200y per item commission, they cap it at 800y per order from the same store. So you'd be looking at an 800y commission even though you're ordering 26 things.

I have no input on the other proxies because my main go-tos for doujin proxying are FJ and TJ. ^^; I'm also unsure about DHL shipping. It is worth mentioning though that books add a lot of weight and you might be pushed out of SAL Small Packet due to the weight limitation (though I have no idea if DHL has a limitation on weight so perhaps that option is still OK). Even though most doujin are thin, I imagine 26 of them would probably be hefty.

I recently used Treasure Japan to buy on surugaya. The amount of my order was approximately 6000 yens and there wasn't any transfer bank fee and domestic shipping fee (hopefully). But there was her commission (950yens I think because Treasure Japan doesn't charge per item but per order :)
I think that you can use Sal small packet to ship the doujins you want, but there are also a lot of options like Airmail or EMS.
Nahoko Yamada is extremely helpful (I had a problem with a calendar I purchased because of its size) and she helped me to find the best solution to ship my package (one EMS and one SAL small packet instead of one EMS package that would have cost me 5000 yens argh...)
I was really annoying because I've kept asking to change the shipping invoice but she always replied nicely.

So I would advise you to take Treasure japan but I haven't tried other proxies yet.
