Decals vs. Painting eyes for custom figmas?? Help? ^^;;

Hello there MFC users! I have a question for all those customizers/kitbashers/GK makers out there. I'm not new to customizing, but in my more recent figma kitbashing I've run across a bit of a dilemma. These are by far the smallest scale customs I've attempted, and to boot I have several ideas with some half in the works (parts bought, that sort of thing). However, in the past I've mostly painted the faces on my customs. With figmas, part of their appeal is the clean, crisp way the eyes are done, which is of course transfer paper/decal paper/screen printed/etc. Does anyone out there recommend a specific brand of transfer paper or decal paper?

Or, does anyone advocate going the painting route instead?

(I also feel it's worth mentioning that most figmas lack the factory molded "guidelines" that most action figures have for eyes as well, which is why this question is really burning for me!)

To give a bit of a background on this, I'm planning on doing characters with some rather detailed/unusual eyes, like Soul Eater's Dr. Stein and Death The Kid. (Ever since I saw Okibe Rintarou's figma I knew I couldn't rest until I made a Dr. Stein out of him! Even his "yelling" face is perfect for Stein's cigarette-hanging-out-of-his-mouth insane laughing face!)

This is just one of the many projects I have planned, and I would love to hear from fellow kitbashers/customizers on this one! Any pics of your customs, either painted or with decals is also extremely appreciated! I'd just love some input from others on this before I really commit to one or the other. :)

Thank you so much!

riringo (3 anos atrás) #2151630Maybe you can try a test painting on something of similar size? Although if you're going for the really sharp precise look, painting's not gonna do it for you lol.

Well, to be fair, I can get things pretty sharp, but of course nothing can beat the machine-precision of a decal. I think decals may be the way to go on this one! *Sighs* Now if I could just get that "cheating" feeling out of my head! XD;;

The-Hurricane (3 anos atrás) #2151474Yeah, my hands are decently sturdy but those ridiculously tiny details are kind of what are swaying me towards decals. I feel a bit like I'm cheating doing it that way though! XD;; If other figure artists weighed in on this and said "try painting" I would give it a go but the sheer scale of them makes me super hesitant. I'm thinking there's a reason why Max Factory makes their eyes decals and hand-paints other details, you know? And eyes like Dr. Stein and whatnot...they're so freaking detailed for this scale! Aughhhh! So indecisive feeling!

riringo (3 anos atrás) #2151450I don't have experience with custom decals, but I think the most ideal would be to go the decal route. Especially for a face that tiny, you can easily mess it up with a paintbrush, unless your hands are super sturdy. :\
