Mecha Musume - 5shikisen (Toranoana)Mecha Musume - 5shikisen (Toranoana)

This article is not suitable for people under 18.
I'm over 18
! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

! This is a review is marked NSFW, because of a few bare chest shots and her panties being in a lot of shots !

Keep in mind the figure reviewd here is quite old and not up to today's standards when it comes to quality!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of 5shikisen ENCYCLOPEDIA #11516 , she is a mecha musume ENCYCLOPEDIA #477 ! This figure ITEM #9874 is made by Toranoana ENCYCLOPEDIA #7661 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Mecha Musume is a variant of Moe Anthropomorphism (also known as Moe Gijinka). This means a character is dressed up (cosplayed) or combined with an inanimate object, an animal or a certain occupation for example. The most well known Moe Anthropomorphism is Kemonomimi, the combination of characters with animal ears and tails. Mecha Musume is the combination of characters combined with military hardware, the most well known versions are combinations with planes, tanks, guns and ships.

The character 5shikisen is based on is the Kawasaki Ki-100 warplane:

The Kawasaki Ki-100 was a plane used by the Japanese in World War II. It's nickname was the Goshikisen, standing for a shortened version of: Go = five, shiki = type and sentoki = fighter. 5shikisen is actually literally the same name, but with the five/go written as a number instead. The plane was known for self-fueling tanks, good armor, it's speed and how high it could fly. It retired in the same year it was introduced (1945) due to reliability problems.

The reason why and how I got her

As a mecha musume fan, I was collecting all the figures from the Toranoana set! I started off with buying MiG-60 ITEM #4716 and shortly after that Re2200 ITEM #4715 . They are the easiest to find from this set. It took me a bit longer to find Me 109E-3 ITEM #4714 , she showed up quite some times on AmiAmi preowned and Yahoo! Japan, but a lot of times she was either missing parts or missing her box and I want my figures to be complete. After a while I found her, which meant only the hardest one from the set 5shikisen ITEM #9874 was left... 5shikisen was quite annoying to come by, she rarely popped up somewhere and a lot of times without box too! At the point of almost giving up hope LOVETT linked me to an AmiAmi pre-owned listing for her in B/B condition and I bought it as quickly as I could! I think it was one of my happiest buying moments!

Original art

Above artwork is the artwork from Humikane Shimada the figure was directly modeled after. The posing is spot-on and most of the differences you will notice with the figure are the used colors. An example is how in the artwork 5shikisen looks tanned, but the figure has a very pale skin color. An big difference when it comes to sculpting details are the bandages on her chest, but more from that later on!

The Box

View spoilerHide spoilerFor the people interested in how she was delivered to my home...I got a mini heart attack when I saw the box!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HFQuQpi93z4/U_Hy2le7TsI/AAAAAAAABDE/j2PYMGwLXys/s720/IMG_1549.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-si6Tz2kCJ2c/U_Hy2Fn-LiI/AAAAAAAABDA/FRvuAP7P6tA/s912/IMG_1550.JPG

The mailman gave it to me with the other side showing, so I didn't notice the dent and hole in the box until I put it down on my couch! This is not what you want to see after hunting for such a long time after a figure! Q.Q

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7LCz7Ok2F40/U_Hy3j6r9hI/AAAAAAAABDQ/wLZXDm1I6g8/s720/IMG_1551.JPG

Luckily when I opened the box it turned out that the ripping/damage stopped just before it would have hit the figure box itself. I was so relieved!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ChtDnZT8dsM/U_Hy5Sa_ytI/AAAAAAAABDc/G4Hq0Fa22Xk/s720/IMG_1589.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WST18RjXXPo/U_Hy8f6syYI/AAAAAAAABD0/YDwsdn6-76s/s720/IMG_1593.JPG

Just like the other figures from this set, the box shows the original artwork the figure was based on at the front. The left-side and back show pictures from the figure itself and the right-side shows pictures of the artwork in the bonus artbook she comes with.

She also comes with a front cover that can be removed to reveal the figure. I noticed this transparant band around it and thought it was something extra from AmiAmi the keep the figure/box safe, but...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N2PGoUtkHaY/U_Hy8p_DU4I/AAAAAAAABD8/a7F9i05e1lg/s720/IMG_1594.JPG

It turned out the box was damaged and actually needed that transparant band so it could stay closed! What you see here is the place where the velcro should have been to keep the cover closed, but it was missing on one side of the box. It's not that velcro is expensive or hard to replace, but I didn't expect this from a box with a B-rank. I would expect this box to have a C-rank because of missing/damaged parts. It's not like this mistake was unknown to AmiAmi, because they placed the transparant band around it themselves! Anyway, the velcro has been replaced by now and it's not a big deal (especially because I was looking so long for this figure!), but a small disappointment on AmiAmi.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-TqH02PSSv_g/U_Hy96y4etI/AAAAAAAABEM/1wIn4BbPBJg/s720/IMG_1596.JPG

The left-side of the cover shows a Japanese icon I like a lot. (Looks more interesting than just their flag, right?)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zF4tT3bojPg/U_Hy-QQcF6I/AAAAAAAABEQ/0dY7Q7C5q8U/s720/IMG_1597.JPG

Here we can take a look at 5shikisen herself and...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-rYuDoicA2WA/U_Hy_k7w1HI/AAAAAAAABEY/dGmggoUI-0I/s912/IMG_1598.JPG

Uh-oh. Please don't tell me this part is damaged and will stay like this!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-r5yH-ciahKw/U_HzAVUbuJI/AAAAAAAABEg/oRZ252Ku7BE/s720/IMG_1599.JPG

The background in the box is a very nice sunset above the clouds. A beautiful picture!

Extra - the artbook

As a bonus, 5shikisen comes with a small artbook!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LIArSQVFAak/U_HzBpwH_4I/AAAAAAAABEo/K7YPABtZbf0/s912/IMG_1600.JPG

The first thing I noticed is this artbook being very different from the others of this set. It is printed on way thicker and very glossy paper. It was very hard to make pictures of without it being too shiny to see what's going on.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bwOTDY-cx5Q/U_HzCtuXzuI/AAAAAAAABEw/UnkSgO4w7Vw/s1440/IMG_1602.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-sa3z1ytv9d8/U_HzDgtUxjI/AAAAAAAABE4/wq7atBZHxmc/s912/IMG_1603.JPG

The first two pages show 5shikisen flying above a beautiful sunset. On the left you can read specifications about her (the book is full Japanese, so I can't read it myself).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-BnW9Vu_3NAs/U_HzEZwrtqI/AAAAAAAABFA/T_HuvgfnkMw/s1440/IMG_1604.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w7MhvzkAHeY/U_HzF1PSfVI/AAAAAAAABFI/y0hsCnMGNiA/s912/IMG_1605.JPG

These pages show what I think the flights from the Kawasaki Ki-100 were.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-w8gWshhK4Ik/U_HzG46Zs4I/AAAAAAAABFQ/lL-GDypGQoU/s1440/IMG_1606.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x-Lwvj4srKU/U_HzIMMTvKI/AAAAAAAABFY/TAYi65n0lkY/s912/IMG_1607.JPG

These probably show the area were the plane was being used.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-E6vS2mM2KUE/U_HzI80PewI/AAAAAAAABFg/sEXWE1CW0Mo/s1440/IMG_1608.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TRxG6w1xXpU/U_HzKbrw7II/AAAAAAAABFs/PUhztXuOk2w/s912/IMG_1609.JPG

And here some nice artwork from 5shikisen herself! It's also quite nice (because it's so rare to see in this type of artwork) that she has some wounds on her. And now onto the...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-juEj-dhdslA/U_HzMhHJrGI/AAAAAAAABF4/Vx9h0ZVexuQ/s912/IMG_1611.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-erOmYtp1tps/U_HzK4I1FaI/AAAAAAAABFw/ZUZ_6V0dHBs/s1440/IMG_1610.JPG

Oh wow wow! What happened here? There is a lot of dirt on only these 2 pages! Did the previous owner display this booklet with these 2 pages open? It also doesn't look like dust, rather like some leftover shavings/sanding from plastic or wood.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-axrrdpP_NPM/U_HzN3L5P3I/AAAAAAAABGA/tlzWbrAgq9Q/s912/IMG_1613.JPG

A bit of cleaning later we can look at this artwork better! I like the design of this girl, with how most of the parts are more around her and aiding her instead of she wearing them.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s5UB1R1e1s4/U_HzO5VfYuI/AAAAAAAABGI/-F8fOSpTWs4/s1440/IMG_1614.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kWoFKESq1e0/U_HzQbGDOiI/AAAAAAAABGQ/RJhlAG23D7o/s912/IMG_1615.JPG

The next artwork is a bit too busy for my liking (especially with all the color usage in the background, it distracts me from looking at the girl).

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1epfnhtSP4Y/U_HzRF1ZSiI/AAAAAAAABGY/d50dHyzpv1M/s1440/IMG_1618.JPG

And with that, we have already arrived at the last two pages. "Already?!" Yes, I can say for sure that this is the smallest booklet from all the Toranoana Mecha Musume figures! They try to hide it with the thick, glossy pages, but they can't trick me!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Gs4RNt5nEqE/U_HzSHtoi_I/AAAAAAAABGg/E1n699xB8sU/s1024/IMG_1619.JPG

The back shows the same Japanese symbol as the inside of the cover of the box. The artbook itself was slighlty disappointing, considering it was a lot smaller than the other artbooks from the figures from this set. I'm also not a fan of the overly glossy pages, as to me it doesn't add much to the artwork. Still, the artbook is a nice bonus with the figure and it's nice to have some artwork in a printed booklet that otherwise would be hard to find!

First Look

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PiKZ8wOF28c/U_HzTTBIzUI/AAAAAAAABGo/DyVYScTydEc/s720/IMG_1620.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XOeKte4QBoU/U_HzU95zxGI/AAAAAAAABGw/_jipbLcdRJM/s720/IMG_1621.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FoHMbgrdKIg/U_HzWAh8LqI/AAAAAAAABG4/OrdrJ6_YKiQ/s720/IMG_1622.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QMPhGu9SXoE/U_HzXHRzGDI/AAAAAAAABHA/fj8lWTqSC7M/s720/IMG_1623.JPG

The blisters protect 5shikisen very well! I think that actually the amount of space left at the back is quite excessive! But it's better to have too much protection instead of not enough!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1NYYqhxyi_o/U_HzX7AkSmI/AAAAAAAABHI/6AMk1S0fxtI/s720/IMG_1624.JPG

And something I was very surprised with, was that the figure still had closed tape on all sides the blisters! And it didn't look like it was retaped, so does that mean that I got a brand-new 5shikisen instead of a B-condition? Well AmiAmi, that makes up for the velcro on the box missing!

The Figure

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-pH1nki35F4M/U_HzZejH9XI/AAAAAAAABHQ/Pbstqtwf_g4/s720/IMG_1625.JPG

The figure consists of 5 parts: main figure, 2 pieces of bandages (one currently on her chest), her sword and her base.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TpvsvtTQyWg/U_Hza24dX2I/AAAAAAAABHc/EsSHA5hyRGA/s720/IMG_1626.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tHBkJiImFTg/U_HzbHQKYCI/AAAAAAAABHg/0us_NGk_DjM/s720/IMG_1627.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZrcFBuYrzU0/U_HzcAnLRzI/AAAAAAAABHo/xO-FmqfX08U/s720/IMG_1628.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Zs8opMLRKwE/U_HzdDePa1I/AAAAAAAABHw/D06yItNlu0A/s720/IMG_1629.JPG

My first impression of 5shikisen was very good! A powerful pose and her expression makes her look even more though! I like how the base is pretty good in "hiding" that the figure is on pegs to give her the flying-effect!

The damage where I was afraid of on her right leg I fixed during the photographing of this review. It needed quite a forceful push to have it back in it's original place.

Display options

5shikisen comes with the following display options:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rPFRiTXkQDQ/U_HzefHASGI/AAAAAAAABH4/LPadeOj5MTg/s912/IMG_1630.JPG

Her chest fully covered with bandages.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-42Wel_1OayE/U_HzfsMuoUI/AAAAAAAABIE/aNJJFED1mVA/s912/IMG_1631.JPG

Bandages taken off and a bare chest.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ryrurfC1X1Q/U_HzhIuUxmI/AAAAAAAABIQ/dKwxi0I4QT8/s912/IMG_1633.JPG

And bandages looking like they are slowly tangling off her.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iYPB_gOdHnM/U_HzgFf2zqI/AAAAAAAABII/MFDax01MlVs/s720/IMG_1632.JPG

Personally I find the bare chest option to look very weird. This is especially because there are no sculpting details to be seen on her chest. You can see the shape of her breasts and a vague hint of where her nipples should be.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DyWFRzwen2Q/U_HzjgkGeSI/AAAAAAAABIg/UMyWsVH22IM/s912/IMG_1635.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-cqo3U83Y7TA/U_HzlDwSIyI/AAAAAAAABIs/xK1iv2KZN14/s912/IMG_1636.JPG

The tangling off damages look very dynamic, but I don't like how it shows her chest so much. Compared to the original artwork:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BGBUCLAjgGQ/U_HzmzXI8TI/AAAAAAAABI4/cKNRoKMAXec/s912/IMG_1639.JPG

...it should still cover all her private areas! Now it just tries to get extra fanservice...for an area that's without details!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O3_4k0NGR98/U_HzlQVCOVI/AAAAAAAABIw/2yWfNo7mjn0/s720/IMG_1638.JPG

So the choice I made is to have her displayed fully bandaged! It's a bit of a shame there are so much leftover pieces at the bottom and right, but I think I will try to fix those myself soon!

Looking at all the details!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-TBTO_7fH9L0/U_HzocBONNI/AAAAAAAABJA/yKQJpuve3ro/s912/IMG_1640.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HsvQxV_Y92U/U_HzpBgAJFI/AAAAAAAABJI/ndQ8agaQnQo/s912/IMG_1641.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Fdr3dQIRPZY/U_HzqcyXK4I/AAAAAAAABJQ/cQFfh-j7xEo/s912/IMG_1642.JPG

View spoilerHide spoilerI'm sorry for the small piece of dirt on her ear, I didn't notice until after taking the pictures. Weird how it was there, because the figure seemed unopened. I love the decals and the overall shine on her eyes! The pupils also come very close to Humikane's style, which is quite rare to see on figures from his characters!

The mouth is sculpted a bit too big, but isn't a problem to me. The sculpting on her fox-ears is very nice, but the paintbrushing shows some errors at the top (could be specific to my copy of this figure).

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-r0wWGCVby7E/U_Hzrstx-_I/AAAAAAAABJg/m3U1XHXbftM/s912/IMG_1643.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WWM90_pXkjE/U_HzsPvzVOI/AAAAAAAABJk/QWjXxtISh4g/s720/IMG_1644.JPG

5shikisen's hair has a lot of seperate streaks. The movement of it looks very dynamic, but I think the ends of them look a bit weird. It's nice that there is also quite some detailing with seperate hairs to be seen. When it comes to paint, everything is one solid color of black (anything that looks like shading is the result of the light was shining on her during the photographing).

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oIqLhVLY0r0/U_HzsWVUg-I/AAAAAAAABJo/bR-DcP3NsNE/s720/IMG_1645.JPG

The only seamline in her hair to be seen is this one at the top, which is hidden quite well if you display her from the front. The seamlines are pretty bad by itself, but I think it looks better to center them all on top of her head instead of a lot of smaller ones at different places.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ks3qVESBpnY/U_Hztpd_KhI/AAAAAAAABJw/U5IC3r3HA_0/s912/IMG_1646.JPG

5shikisen wears an outfit with traditional kimono-type sleeves. Because of her black hair being so close and sometimes on top of the white sleeves, you can see some paint transfers. When I picked up the streak of hair here I also saw a paint transfer underneath. So be careful if you plan on touching/moving her hair!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EII-9rueDnc/U_HzucvkDhI/AAAAAAAABJ4/lLvljF7iO9o/s720/IMG_1647.JPG

Her arm guards are very nicely sculpted, but the painting is a bit sloppy on some points, such as the arrows.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ADXZXes5DGA/U_Hz0SDA5MI/AAAAAAAABKo/Bi70XeSg82s/s912/IMG_1655.JPG

The back of 5shikisen's jacket shows some movement and wrinkles.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xgBTloS7lwY/U_HzwkpM8FI/AAAAAAAABKI/vYKO8Y8auak/s912/IMG_1649.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k5woOMOMx0M/U_Hzx53jALI/AAAAAAAABKQ/RNzWNejo77o/s912/IMG_1650.JPG

On her back, she wears the typical school-backpack used in Japan. The sculpting details on it are quite nice and the painting is simple, but good!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5tgy05WvJ88/U_Hzy6iYHsI/AAAAAAAABKc/URrr0-IX_M8/s912/IMG_1651.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_aLcYZFoAQo/U_Hzzdf-_dI/AAAAAAAABKg/a_YbVB2OoRo/s720/IMG_1653.JPG

With the straps of her backpack they were either lazy or sloppy. Luckily the straps aren't very noticeable on 5shikisen's design as a lot of other parts grab your attention!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3qNhbfunGNU/U_HzvWmCDzI/AAAAAAAABKA/0HU9ykp7Q5E/s912/IMG_1648.JPG

The seamlines on her hand...wow, just wow. I have never seen seamlines like that before! It looks like the cast of the hands was in 2 parts and later on they put them together. Not thinking about sanding or trying to remove any of the leftovers...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-CkMJCParWvQ/U_Hz1hV4l9I/AAAAAAAABK4/ffpcUTQgrFk/s912/IMG_1656.JPG

So you thought her left hand was bad?

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0gcZHf88HOU/U_Hz2w8A2tI/AAAAAAAABLA/J_1ZInPpD-U/s912/IMG_1657.JPG

Ugh! Just about everything went wrong with the sculpt from her hands. And then I also have this random blob of red paint on my copy of this figure... My guess is that the fingers were sculpted being stuck on the sword and later they glued to fingers + sword on the rest of her hand. Still, the quality is so poor here...

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HWcsmbN-2lM/U_Hz4E3Hq3I/AAAAAAAABLI/CUH8p5RAj8U/s912/IMG_1658.JPG

Okay, let's try to forget about the hands and move onto her sword. The sculpting on the handle is quite nice, but the painting is not very even.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VLnAApg8gzc/U_Hz5fD0mLI/AAAAAAAABLQ/bOgPjR3PyV4/s912/IMG_1660.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tZK9Mr0_ZA8/U_Hz6jIr0-I/AAAAAAAABLY/OmZ1xnvdK0M/s912/IMG_1661.JPG

The paint on the sword shows some air-bubbles and the way the silver shines immedeately reminded me of some LEGO accesories I used to have when I was younger. I used to have multiple LEGO swords with exactly this silver shine and I remember the paint chipping off pretty quickly! I'm afraid 5shikisen's sword has the same type of silver paint, so I better try to not touch it at all!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-peAPF35jNBo/U_Hz73kT9dI/AAAAAAAABLg/cdbzegZVv2o/s912/IMG_1662.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XYaAh7tczPo/U_Hz8zmm--I/AAAAAAAABLo/3fg53vPgJrg/s912/IMG_1663.JPG

5shikisen wears a pleated skirt with the small detail of a ribbon at the front. The sculpting on the skirt is very nice, especially at the back.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Aq6LY0B6gy4/U_Hz-SzypHI/AAAAAAAABL8/K-T6WjnO_nE/s912/IMG_1664.JPG

The sheath for her sword is (except for the small painting error of black at the top), very nice when it comes to paint and sculpt. I like how they used this more grainy brown paint (or is the effect in the sculpt?) to make it look more like leather. The gold parts give off a nice shine too! It's very interesting that here they used high quality gold paint, while the silver paint on the sword looks low quality.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9tWwTf5cb7M/U_Hz_2P5x7I/AAAAAAAABMA/E7SLNTEeUno/s912/IMG_1666.JPG

Something interesting to mention is that the left part of her top that is tucked into her skirt, is sticking out here at the bottom. Although the sculpt of it is very simple, it's nice that they thought of this detail!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yVsCb0MUZZI/U_H0B1BxLbI/AAAAAAAABMQ/NVykTEQC-9U/s912/IMG_1668.JPG

And now, onto her pantsu!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-gPYA3UCTMp4/U_H0BxSwpqI/AAAAAAAABMM/Ot5IFwXGQCA/s720/IMG_1669.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FIhbXEcWaiE/U_H0CxDx6rI/AAAAAAAABMc/LuzKXDdXhCM/s912/IMG_1670.JPG

5shikisen wears a simple, white panty. This type of panty with the low-cut front is one we see a lot on Humikane's characters. An interesting and unexpected detail is that you can see the complete shape of her private parts. Other details are in the seams of her panties. There are a few parts where a bit of white paint is on her skin, but overall the painting is well done.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5zD4FUtYbnI/U_H0DYL_XiI/AAAAAAAABMg/nQ1V9qmVYDE/s720/IMG_1671.JPG

Her tail has a simple sculpt, but is good looking!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E19S2tCgsUo/U_H0EoQy-NI/AAAAAAAABMo/Feqf2rnB2sw/s912/IMG_1672.JPG

You can see a bit of those airbrush splatters that were also at her ears. From up-close it looks like dirt, but it really is paint!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CVsz8jbz8rY/U_H0GWrsZCI/AAAAAAAABMw/vc_cPU7N6o0/s912/IMG_1673.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nBk8PXy-4Nk/U_H0IlHPAVI/AAAAAAAABNA/r-lopNhqP_M/s912/IMG_1675.JPG

The transition from her thighs to the plane legs is very nice, it looks pretty natural (as far as mecha musume parts can look natural, that is).

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NfMsf1KoXQ4/U_H0JmP_LLI/AAAAAAAABNQ/2f2fyJk-kws/s720/IMG_1676.JPG

We see the same detailing here as on the other Toranoana girls. The small details that have been sculpted in, have been given some darker paint to let them stand out more.

My specific copy of this figure has a few glue-marks, of which you can see one just under the wing in this picture.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jynQoJONzys/U_H0LSH_HgI/AAAAAAAABN0/lC00TzGumfk/s912/IMG_1680.JPG

It looks like someone here tried to wipe his painting error off! Seems like he wasn't quick enough.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GsHaGVc9L_c/U_H0MEvTJLI/AAAAAAAABN4/pp0BbO0j4Ik/s720/IMG_1682.JPG

Overall, the legs are not perfect, but I think they look pretty good for a figure this age with that amount of details.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-cMNIxIGocgA/U_H0J0eD7uI/AAAAAAAABNc/hFsxEZzGtIA/s912/IMG_1678.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-iIM7_fT2Tto/U_H0KucpBRI/AAAAAAAABNo/WWVLC9KeZKA/s912/IMG_1679.JPG

Just as with the others of this set, you can spin the propellors, which I still think is a nice gimmick!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EmER6cxyzPQ/U_H0NglZF5I/AAAAAAAABOA/_z5OLe8Izqc/s912/IMG_1683.JPG

At the back of her plane legs there are (not removeable) black blocks. You have to click these in the base, she will not stand on her own!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x0JWwThpTjM/U_H0QfYActI/AAAAAAAABOQ/SbPTzAMd6wQ/s912/IMG_1685.JPG

The black blocks are maybe not the nicest option, but I think that, especially with the left leg, they give her a flying effect, which is pretty nice when you look at her from a distance. View spoilerHide spoilerQuite a lot of other plane-mecha musume characters have rods (that stand out a lot) to make it look like they are flying.

The only detail on the base itself is her name, function and type of plane at the bottom left. The shape of the base is a bit awkward, but I think it's better to have it like this, insetad of an rectangle or oval you would otherwise see and would make a figure take up way more place than necessary.

Comparing to the others from this set

If I look at all the figures of this set and put them in order of how good I think they are to the less good looking ones:

1st place is Me 109E-3 ITEM #4714 Especially her face is really good and she has the least amount of flaws of the four.
Second place: Tie between Re2200 ITEM #4715 and 5shikisen ITEM #9874 . Re2200 has horrible problems with her feet and 5shikisen has horrible problems with her hands. Otherwise both are pretty good looking.
Last place is MiG-60 ITEM #4716 . Her face is pretty hard to look at and she has multiple weird things going on, such as her clothing that should be see-through. But when it comes to posing, she is the most special of all.

This means that 5shikisen is in my opinion not the worst detailed, but because of her being so rare and more expensive than the rest, I can understand it if other collectors would be a bit frustrated to see her quality is not the best of the set after they get her, so I hope my review informs them well! Still if you look at the total price, you could get all 4 for around 10.000-15.000 yen total (pre-owned and in good condition with boxes and booklets) View spoilerHide spoilermyself, I paid the following for them (without shipping and taxes): Me 109E-3: 1500 yen, Re2200: 2500 yen, 5shikisen: 5500 yen and MiG-60: 2500 yen, which I think is pretty nice considering these are the only big figures of Humikane's older artwork.

Summary or tl;dr

Positive
- Really nice box design.
- A bonus with a figure, no matter how small, is always a good thing!
- Multiple display options.
- Nice expression and posing!
- The sculpting is pretty good at most parts!

Neutral
- I would have liked one of the display options to be more like the original artwork.
- Her bare chest doesn't have any details at all, which could be a downside to the people that would like to display this figure like that.
- Small painting errors here and there, was to be expected from a figure this age.

Negative
- HER HANDS. JUST. WOW.
- The silver paint on her sword looks quite cheap.
View spoilerHide spoiler- I feel a bit betrayed by AmiAmi for selling me a figure with a missing part of the box as a B-condition...especially because she is quite a rare figure a lot of people look after... I know I shouldn't complain, because I got a good deal, but... *sigh*

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
Except for the horror going on at her hands, the sculpting is pretty good!

Painting 7/10
Not without flaws, but certainly not bad.

Posing 8/10
Fierce and ready to attack! I like it!

Base 7/10
The base itself is not good looking, but I like how it supports her legs!

Packaging 9/10
Just as with the others of this set, excellent box design. I love the extra front cover!

Extra - the artbook 8/10
Not as good as the artbook of the others, but still a nice bonus!

Enjoyment 10/10
I couldn't give enjoyment anything else but a 10/10. After a long search I finally found this figure and have my Toranoana set complete!

Conclusion

5shikisen is defenitely not flawless, but she is very nice. If you are a fan of the older designs of Humikane Shimada, I defenitely recommend her! Do keep in mind her current marketvalue, so if you think she is too expensive, it's maybe better to first look at the others from the set. I recommend Me 109E-3 the most!

Availability

Well, she is pretty hard to find. And when you find her it's even harder to get one that is complete and in good condition. If you do find her complete and with box and booklet, think about paying 5000-8000 yen for her depending on condition!

And to finish it!

Currently I have my figures in storage, but here is how I used to display her in my collection!

TomTheCat (4 anos atrás) #2360585What, that's a Japanese military backpack? o_O Looks more like the handbag of a fashion doll XD
Well, if school uniforms are just as plenty as military items in Mecha Musume, I think we'll never know indeed! As I said, I know nothing about the source, so who am I to argue. I assume I was just misled by all those military references.
Don't worry about bothering Humikane with this, it really is not important at all.
And don't let yourself get distracted too much by your research into Japanese military equipment. It's interesting for sure, but one can easily get lost in those vast fields ;-)

Well, apparantly it can be put on your back according to the info i found. xD But it seems that the other picture I posted is a more regularly used bag!

Oh no, I wasn't planning on contacting Humikane with this, haha! I did once find an e-mail address from him on an (old) website, but I have no idea if he still uses that one. I plan one day to write him a big fan letter. ^///^ And my guess is that that emailaddress is the only way in trying to get in contact with him. He tends to stay quite anonymous (he also doesn't have any pictures of himself online, and doesn't let out much personal info), so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't answer to (much) e-mails, but it never hurts to try!

Well when I have a specific thing to look for (such as now with the bags) I don't mind, but it's just too much for me to become an expert on (Japanese) military in general. I'm more the person that likes the looks, which is why I'm more of a Mecha Musume fan than a history fan! ;)

TomTheCat (4 anos atrás) #2355834While I'm generally interested in military equipment, I'm far from being an expert on the topic. But I admit that I'm even less of an expert on Mecha Musume!
That said, I can only assume that Japanese soldiers used some sort of backpacks at some point in history. The somewhat cumbersome knapsack had its star already waning before World War Two in most armies around the world, so I can't be sure if WWII Japanese soldiers were issued a standardized container that was carried like a school backpack.
But still, with all the military theme going on with this figure and this source, I find it highly unlikely that she's indeed having a school backpack. Or is she some sort of supergirl who's still at school but transforms into the 5shikisen when called upon? I wouldn't know! XD Either way, it's not really important. She's having a backpack, school or military, and that's it...

Personally I'm interested in military equipment, but I know a lot more about Mecha Musume (not sure if I would call myself an expert though :P). In a lot of Mecha Musume designs you see school uniforms and outfit based on sailor clothing. Because of that (although 5shikisen doesn't wear any of those outfits) I generally thought of a school backpack when I saw hers. To be absolutely sure I think the only thing we can do is send Humikane Shimada himself a message to ask it. Although I have heard quite a lot in the past that Mecha Musume artists say they let themselves be "inspired" by military equipment and not generally design characters or props to look like something that existed, so that could also be the case here! ;)

I looked a bit more into backpacks Japanese soldiers use and have used and I found results like:

http://cdn.needsupply.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/460x590/e9607dc71bc010050ca2ae6f644b84c1/1/0/1005705_1.jpg

In there too! But a lot of the backpacks are these more general designs like:

http://www.echobasetoys.com/More_12_inch_Stuff_Pics/DID_Pics/DID-Parts/Japanese_Parts_Pics/DID8-P110.jpg

This one here was used during WWII. The first one I showed a pictures off I couldn't find in which years it was used.

Since 5shikisen was directly based off multiple pieces of artwork, she doesn't have any background information. So I think we will never know! xD If Humikane already had the mindset of which he created Strike Witches with, that would mean that 5shikisen is trained to use the plane legs and lives on a base.

Anyway, I think this is an interesting discussion, because I'm now looking a lot more information about military items used in Japan!

Maakie (4 anos atrás) #2317059Thank you very much! ^^ And hrrmm, about the backpack, I'm doubting a bit. Multiple of my Mecha Musume figures have military backpacks, but those are German and African units. I'm not sure if Japanese units also used bags like that?
And ah of course! I was pretty frustrated while writing, because I couldn't come up with the name of the flag, thank you! I will edit it in the review!

VioFitz (4 anos atrás) #2317201Her hands seamlines freaks me out but, overall sculpt is fine. Although, I feel like some paintjob are slightly messy. Once again, that is one good review!

Ugh yeah, the hands are horrible. The figure has so much nice details at other places I don't understand how they could "forget" to fix her hands...

Thank you very much! ^^

TomTheCat (4 anos atrás) #2313606That's a very nice and exhaustive review - well done! However I think that she doesn't have a "school backpack". In keeping with the military theme, it should be called a knapsack (French: giberne, German: Tornister).
The motif on the inside of the box cover and on the back of the booklet is the so-called "Rising Sun Flag". It's obviously a variation of the Hinomaru, the Japanese flag (A red disc on a white backdrop). The 16 added sunrays give it a spectacular look. This Rising Sun Flag has been the flag of the Japanese Army from 1870 until 1945. A further modification of this Rising Sun Flag, with the red disc moved slightly out of the center of the flag, was the flag of the Japanese Navy, also from 1870 - 1945. It was reintroduced as the flag of the Japanese Navy in 1954.

mikeymikemichael (4 anos atrás) #2313814Yeah the Me 109E-3 is nice, and obviously the proto Barkhorn, and the Re2200 is the proto Luccini. The Mig 60, IMO is a fusion of Ella and Sonya's characters, the roots of SW.

Hrmmm I didn't think about Mig60 being Ella/Sonya, hrmmm. When it comes to art I see the likeness, but I don't see it much with the figure (but that's probably also because of her face)!

pauldy (4 anos atrás) #2314541For a figure that was made in the previous decade... this was good for it's time
Although I personally dislike how Toranoana painted her eyes.. Even the MiG-60 has better looking eyes, at least for me ^^
ALTER and other manufacturers into Strike Witches & other Mecha Musume seem to have raised the bar tenfold in terms of quality, accuracy & details. Now there's an explosion of Mecha Musumue figures (or maybe it's just KanColle)
People might look down on these older figures but these were one of the first hence, memorable..
Nice Review ^^
Congratulations on getting all 4 plane girls =D

Oh yeah, it's pretty good for her age! Especially if you look at her from a distance! :)

Hrmm, I actually quite like the eyes, but everybody's different! ;D

I think it's just Kan Colle. :P For me it looks like Strike Witches has been on this steady pace of here and there an Alter figure and sometimes a few prize figrues. When you think of Mecha Musume as in, Humikane's original designs, there actually hasn't happened much since this set: ENCYCLOPEDIA #23362 of which the last one came out 3 years ago (I remember missing out the pre-orders and stressing to get them on the aftermarket! :P).

Personally I don't look down on them, but I actually think that some of the trading figure sets of these designs look better. It's also easier to accept minor flaws with those because of their size and prize.

And thank you very much! :D Now my next Mecha Musume-related focus will be to get all the trading figures, but I will do that in a slower pace. xD
