My First Forwarding OrderMy First Forwarding Order

CantisamaCantisama3 anos atrásDiary
A month ago I wrote about my first proxy experience. I used Big in Japan and the process went well. I was ready to do another proxy order when I came across this great forwarding guide on MFC: BLOG #16043

I decided to give forwarding a shot. On top of less fees, forwarding lets you place your order right away so you don't worry about items selling out while waiting on your proxy to order for you.

Let's see what happend:

Choosing a Forwarding Service
I didn't do much research this time like I did when I proxied. I went with BiJ since I've shopped with them many times before and their fees are reasonable. BiJ charges 500yen to forward and a PayPal fee of 3.4% + 40yen. That % fee is applied to the forwarding ticket and shipping fees only. Unlike with a proxy, there is no % fee on order value.

Placing My Order
The forwarding guide was a huge help. The first name entries are for your English first/last names (eg "John" "Smith") and then the next row is your name in katakana. You can use an English -> Katakana converter to get your name. The guide includes how to put in BiJ's address and which buttons to press when checking out.

PayPal payment for Suruga-ya is done at order placement, but the transaction is left pending until Suruga-ya confirms stock of items and ships.

After ordering with Suruga-ya, buy the forwarding ticket from BiJ. In the order comments include the name of the shop you're forwarding from and what you are ordering (in case they have trouble identifiying your order). You also pick your shipping method at this time.

This is where I made a little mistake. In the order comments I stated that my order size would likely require EMS but I would prefer SALU if possible to save money. I still picked EMS as my shipping method on the next page though. Thanks to Suruga-ya's extreme packing (see below), my order actually would have barely fit small packet size restrictions. BiJ ignored my order comments and invoiced for EMS. I emailed them afterwards about whether SALU was possible, but their reply was no change could be made once the invoice had been sent. At least EMS let me get my order very quickly.

The "Dangers" of Ordering from Suruga-ya
Suruga-ya items randomly go on short sales. You refresh a product page only to find your item of interest has dropped in price for the next few hours. Does a good job of pressuring that order submit button.

As I added items to my Suruga-ya order, the prices would slash out and be replaced by lower prices in red. I couldn't read it, but I think they give you a % discount when you spend so much. It's diabolical!

I ended up ordering more than I had planned :P

Waiting
The forwarding process was much faster than when I proxied. After placing my order with Suruga-ya, they took three days to confirm item stock and ship out. Probably would have only been one day had I not ordered during Obon weekend. BiJ received it in a day, invoiced me, and shipped out the day after receiving payment.

Btw, everything I ordered was in stock. Some of the items were only 1 left at time of ordering and sold out after I ordered. It seems Suruga-ya's stock system can be trusted.

Loot
Keep in mind that all items on Suruga-ya are considered secondhand. There is always the possibility of some paint transfers, scratches, smoke smell, etc. I'll make a note on condition as we go through the loot.

The box was filled to the brim. You may already be able to identify an item or two. Let's investigate!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981312.jpeg
Banpresto Kuji Kyun-Chara Shinobu: ITEM #206938
Banpresto Kuji Kyun-Chara Oninoko: ITEM #206941
These Monogatari Kuji Kyun-Charas were the reason I started this order in the first place. They are surprisingly big... maybe I shouldn't call them petits.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981314.jpeg
Oninoko next to Nendoroid Nadeko ITEM #189894. Overall size is similar though Oninoko has a larger head / smaller body than Nendos.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981316.jpeg
Shinobu's chair came with a broken leg. This isn't Suruga-ya's fault, just a bad prize design. It still looks fine by putting the broken peg in the base first, then placing the chair on top.

Nendoroid Petit Konata Swim: ITEM #2018
Nendoroid Petit Konata Maid: ITEM #2038
Some Lucky Star goodies. On the left we have Konata Swim petit and to the right is Konata Maid petit, but what's with this larger box in the middle?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981446.jpeg
Wait, this big box is only holding something small?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981448.jpeg
Kagami Vignette: ITEM #6302
Awww, it's a tiny Kagami relaxing with manga and snacks. I happened to be watching Lucky Star the other night and noticed this pose is taken from a 3 second scene in episode 2 (shown in the corner of the pic). She is well detailed for being so small.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981450.jpeg
The two Konatas look big but are only Nendo Petits. Kagami is about the size of a Ritz cracker. In fact...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981452.jpeg
*tasty*

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981454.jpeg
I love School Rumble. Yakumo Tsukamoto is one of my favorite characters of all time. I'll need to find a good way to display this fan.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981518.jpeg
Eri Keychain: ITEM #31552
Would have preferred her school uniform ver ITEM #26343 but it wasn't available.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981520.jpeg
Bandai R-style Asuka Petit: ITEM #30028
Apron is removable. There were paint transfers from having all the parts packed in a single plastic rather than separate pouches (I'm hoping this was originally in separate pouches). I got the black out of her hair with an eraser, but the bits of orange on her apron would be harder to remove. Not a big deal so I'll leave her be.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981584.jpeg
Sega Haqua: ITEM #78688
Amazing looking Haqua! She has a slight bit of (what I think is) smoke smell, but not enough to be annoying. Otherwise she is in great shape.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Cantisama1408981586.jpeg
Nendoroid Tohka: ITEM #144336
Wow is Nendo Tohka adorable~ I would say she's been opened before because it wasn't the usual circle tape on the box, but she is in perfect condition! Not even the slightest scratch on her.

I didn't watch season 1 of Date A Live until the English dub came out. By then Nendo Tohka was hard to find. The price I got her at from Suruga-ya vs how much she would have cost me elsewhere pretty much covered the extra cost of EMS :)

Invoices
Suruga-ya:
Like I mentioned earlier, Suruga-ya prices can be lowered during random short sales and by buying a certain amount of items. Below I list the normal advertised price followed by the price I paid at order time for each figure.

R-Style Asuka Petit | 380yen | 361yen
Konata Swim Petit | 700yen | 665yen
Konata Maid Petit | 650yen | 570yen
Kuji Shinobu Petit | 880yen | 836yen
Kuji Ononoki Petit | 780yen | 741yen
Sega Haqua | 790yen | 523yen
Kagami Vignette | 310yen | 238yen
Nendo Tohka | 3800yen | 3610yen
Eri Keychain | 60yen | 60yen
Yakumo/Eri Fan | 210yen | 210yen
Total: 7814yen

Note that the keychain and fan did not get a discount. I think the % discount is by category, so items and figures are treated separately.

BiJ:
500yen (forwarding ticket) + 3600yen (EMS) + 140yen (3.4% PayPal fee) + 40yen (PayPal fee) = 4280yen

Total for forwarding fees: 680yen
(Total for fees using BiJ proxy instead of forwarding: 1787yen)

Total for invoices: 12094yen

Conclusion
I will do forwarding over proxy orders from now on. Forwarding is cheaper, faster, and easy once you get the hang of it. There is hesitation at first while filling out order information in a language you don't understand. Follow the forwarding guide BLOG #16043 and you will be fine :3

Aokidanza (3 anos atrás) #2319095Forwarding is so nerve-wracking the first time you do it. I used BiJ's service to order an exclusive that's due to come out late September. Here's hoping I did everything right. orz
The lack of padding there makes me nervous, but my order was from Amazon.jp, not Suruga-ya. Wonder if it'll be any better.
Anyway, nice loot! The Ritz cracker pics made me lol. xD She's so adorable!

Amazon.jp has a fine English-speaking staff and of course an English version of the back end of their store. Very suitable as a first forwarding quest. :P

Domestic shipping in Japan typically is not as protective as intl. shipping. If the item is fragile or you do not want box damage, it's advisable to upgrade to BiJ repacking.

BiJ repacking is very nice.

AmyInWonderland (3 anos atrás) #2319179Did you order directly from their (Surugaya's) website and not Rakuten? I've always ordered from Surugaya from Rakuten and am wondering why you used a forwarding service. I'm genuintely curious, I don't want to sound mean.

Main Surugaya site has cheaper prices, more sales and can accept Paypal. Rakuten-Surugaya has higher prices and cannot accept Paypal.

The biggest obstacle is the language barrier, but 90% of the words are repeats like Name, Address, Telephone Number. New, Used, Rank B, name of the show, character name, the japanese word for "Figure", the japanese word for "Rubber Strap" and so forth.

Vladederp (3 anos atrás) #2319028Ive been really curious on what stores have to use proxy to forward overseas other than BiJ.
The only other forwarder I know off the top of my head is dv8cag: www.dv8cag.com/
Heard good things about him from fellow Cheap Ass Gamers.

Are you referring to Nendo Red? If so I'm doing the same thing (ordered from Amazon.jp, forward to BiJ) :)

I don't know if Amazon.jp's padding will be better. I recently received Nendo Yoshino from Amazon.com prime shipped and they provided even less padding than Suruga-ya. My Suruga-ya boxes arrived unharmed, but Yoshino figure box came with some damage. Hopefully Japan Amazon is better at packing figures than US Amazon.

redxmaverick (3 anos atrás) #2319171This past month I've switch from proxy to BiJ's forwarding service. 500 yen is a steal. I think I'm going to find myself ordering so much more now with the forwarding service. xD
I can see myself ordering more through forwarding too. But not in the near future... September is already killer *v*

Ordered direct from Suruga-ya: www.suruga-ya.j...
I've heard Rakuten Suruga-ya isn't the best for foreign orders. Do they even offer international shipping these days?

Is there a tutorial on how to create a Toranoana account? I haven't had trouble with creating accounts on other japanese websites but Toranoana is giving me trouble.

I've just made my first forwarding order (through BiJ, that is; in the past I've used a Japanese friend, lol) for a doujin from Toranoana. Making orders through Toranoana is like pulling teeth so I hope it goes well.

Very nice! I'm definitely using BiJ's forwarding service the next time I order from Surugaya. I just made my first proxy order from there a while ago and I'm already craving more. I need to order more. My hands are shaking. O_O

takson (3 anos atrás) #2318926Wow. I do not want to think of what that package would go through in my post office.
There is almost no protective packaging in there. I would have been sad if the fan broke in transit. I suppose using EMS instead of SAL was a blessing. You can pay BiJ to repackage your order for an additional 500yen + higher shipping cost due to extra padding.

AkibaMelon (3 anos atrás) #2318959So the overall cost of the forwarding service was only 640 Yen? That's really not much!
680yen (forgot that 40yen PayPal transaction fee). Very affordable. BiJ proxy for this order, on the other hand, would have been 1787yen in fees since they 15% of total cost including items.

Thanks a lot for your report! Very detailed and informative!

I haven't done a lot of research in terms of proxies and forwarding yet, since I never really bothered for an item that wasn't available through the usual shop sites. But I've always thought forwarding services would cost a lot more (like 2000 Yen-ish). I obviously had no idea ^_^;
