Puzzle Nr.79 Why so many golden Laytons?Puzzle Nr.79 Why so many golden Laytons?

Some things in my wishlist I don't dare to see as grails, mainly cause grails are items I hope to one day own. I have figures and collectible items that I have given up on long long time ago, and could only dream to one day be able to purchase them. Some of them are the golden Layton figures.

The golden version of the bobblehead and revoltech could be attained by purchasing their original release back in 2009, solve the puzzle on the card that came with them and send in the answer to a lottery. However not everyone could win, these lotteries only had 30 chosen winners, which still is a lot better than the 3 pieces limited Bronze statue. one day I shall have you

Though about a month ago I turned on my pc just to see nothing new of interest, all the stores I usually check had the same items as they've had for a couple of months, and yahoo had been the same as well so I didn't care to check it that day. As my friend signed in later that evening and we were discussing merchandise she sent me a link to an auction for the Layton bobble heads, mentioning they were so cheap she should grab them.
And they were, 550 is very cheap, even for these guys. However as I looked at them Layton looked....different
It was the gold version

My friend and I screamed as we realized it, and it was obvious we both wanted him oh so badly. Even though I was dying with jealousy of my friend I decided not to bid on him, after all she found him first so it was the right thing to do.
However, the day after I decided to make sure to check yahoo, because god knows what I could miss except this golden fellah, and I dropped my jaw when I did. Because guess what, they put up another set!
I immediately bid on it and had to wait for three painful days to see if I got them or not. Since my funds are not that big I could not put down the max bid I wish I could, so I was admitting defeat beforehand just in case. The auction my friend bid on ended one day before mine and to both our surprises no other bid was made. She got them for the small start bid of 550 yen.
Though even if she got lucky I didn't dare to think that I would get as well. I swear to god, the last 10 minutes of the auction I was so nervous I was about to throw up HAHA you go nervous trainwreck

And now the story gets interesting
After those auctions more golden Laytons popped up. My friend won 2 other of the same set and I couldn't help myself from bidding on an extra as well. But as we kept winning these golden lil men we stopped and discussed how on earth there could be so...many?
As mentioned before these figures were limited to only 30 pieces, how on earth did so many of them show up in the same store, and why did no one bid against us?
Now I know very few Layton collectors, especially Japanese ones. But still why was there....no....competition what so ever? I have been in some horrible bidding wars over post card sets, doujins and origami papers, so why was there none for these actually rare and limited figures? My friend and I started to worry if we were scammed, or if it was possible that they were bootlegs. Even if I had managed to win two of the figure I only dared to dream of ever owning I still couldn't believe it, it was truly one of those "Too good to be true" situations.

About a week afterwards I received a package with my two sets. So well, at least I wasn't scammed. The shipping cost ended up a lot more than I excepted to but that's another story. As I opened the package I noticed that both the boxes were completely factory sealed, and also that Layton's box was just the same as the original bobble head. (I don't mind though, I love this box design a lot)

Sadly I have never seen these IRL, or know anyone that owns them, so I have no idea if the boxes should be identical or not. I was expecting something to be different, like the text saying golden vers. or that the illustration of Layton on the top to be golden, but nope. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sadly my standard bobble head is stored in Sweden so I don't have his box to compare with.

What also surprised me was that on the inside of the box they explain how to enter the lottery, and that a golden Layton can be won. The box even included the puzzle card that was supposed to come with the standard bobble head.

The golden gents in all their glory!

The figures themselves don't feel like bootlegs, or if they have just spray painted the standard version. The material is a bit more "rubbery" than the standard version, but I think it's because they used a different type of plastic because of the colour. I'm very happy I decided to get two, since one of them have pretty visible paint blobs in his face ;_;
The extra Lukes that I got with them are not included in this photoshoot since they have already been sold.

The bottom has the logo that is the same as the standard ones, and there is nothing about them that seems bootleg to me.

So final thoughts; I love my two golden lil gentlemen even if they make me very nervous and confused.
Even now there are still 3 auctions up with this figure, though it seems to be the last ones, but then again what do we know.

Maakie (3 anos atrás) #4998704That was a very interesting read! I think this will be a mystery forever! My first thought was that someone is buying the original one and painting them gold, but that's just silly.
Thank you! I'm sorry to say it professor but maybe you are the puzzle we will never solve. And yeah I was scared of that thought as well for a while? But seems like that is not the case??

A nice Layton, But personally I wOuld love a Layton as he appeared in the artwork of Layton VS Phoenix by Capcom style. I like that stule slightly better.

Ah yes the buffdaddy one. As much as I love that version the original Layton will always be closest to my heart. Maybe cause I prefer cute over handsome haha. Still though, would be nice to see figures of that version.

solluxcaptor (3 anos atrás) #4897049Ah wow, these are so cool! *_* It does seem like quite the mystery... perhaps someone stumbled upon some factory extras that weren't given away as part of the event and sold those on? Maybe they just failed the quality control since you said one has a paint blob on it. Somehow I doubt they're bootlegs at least.
;; it's probably the coolest item I own haha.
It could...be? But it feels like the seller would state it in the description, because dosen't that make them even more rare? Then again the seller didn't say much more than "golden vers." in the description so....

Weeacvnt (3 anos atrás) #4885412They look pretty cute if you ask me. :)
They are very cute indeed! I think the risk of them being bootlegs is very very little, though they still make me nervous hahah. ;;

Fallen-Cloud (3 anos atrás) #4885450Maybe they re-produced the golden bobbleheads after a while, but without adding some sort of indication to confirm that these are the 30 rare ones? That way those will keep their worth but others can enjoy the golden version too?
Mhm...
"Professah, I'd like a hint coin!"

Hmmmm it sounds sort of odd to produce more of a figure that they had put such a limit on, especially considering how you could get him. There have also been no such case with the golden revoltech, and no re-release of the standard version either. ;; My friend had a theory that might have idk accidentally produced some more, but only used 30 for lottery entries, and have since then stored the leftovers at a warehouse. Or maybe 30 people didn't send in the correct answer and got accepted to the lottery?
I actually have no clue if the golden version is supposed to be worth anything big, but looking at these fellahs the standard version have a much higher pricetag than them haha.
*throws hint coins everywhere*
