Plum 1/7 Airi Kashii

victorvipervictorviper1 ano atrásReview
Today we'll be reviewing the latest figure in a line that's become a favorite of mine, Plum's Airi Kashii. Her bunny outfit means that some of the shots below could be considered somewhat NSFW...

About the character: Airi Kashii is a character from the Ro-Kyu-Bu media franchise. Airi, like most of the characters in Ro-Kyu-Bu, is a player on the fledgling girls' basketball team at Keishin Academy. As far and away the tallest girl on the team, Airi is therefore a natural choice to play center. Her tall physique differentiates her significantly from her teammates, and she is quite sensitive about this; when someone brings up the subject, it's not unheard of for her to break into tears. Poor Airi-chan...

Other data:

Height: 168 cm (5'6")
Nicknames: Airin, Prismatic Bird
Position: Center
Birthday/Astrological Sign: April 5 (Aries). The fact that Airi is a couple of months older than most of her teammates, ostensibly explaining her height and overall physique, is something of a running joke in the show.
Jersey Number: 7
Other players to wear number 7: Carmelo Anthony, Toni Kukoc, Kevin Johnson, Lamar Odom

Now, on to the review.

Packaging----------8/10

This was a first. I've had figure boxes wrapped in tissue paper and figure boxes wrapped in cling film, but this is the first time I've ever gotten a new figure in a box in a sealed plastic bag!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1455851726.jpeg

One side of the box features an illustration of Airi.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1455851728.jpeg

The other side features a large shot of the figure. Ro-Kyu-Bu has spawned a manga, various games, and an anime, and this is clearly the Airi of the anime (compare with ITEM #81986 for a non-anime depiction of the character).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1455851730.jpeg

As you can see, there is not much set up involved, other than to get Airi attached to the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1455851732.jpeg

This is not a tiny figure, and the box is correspondingly large, measuring 31 by 19 by 17 cm. Figure and box weigh approximately 530 grams.

Posing----------9/10

In my opinion, Airi's pose is one of the highlights of the figure. She is quite self-conscious about her height and her body type in general, so her slightly awkward, pigeon-toed stance as well as the way she's trying to cover herself up is perfectly in character for Airi.

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529059.jpeg

The pose reflects Airi's personality nicely, and she looks good from several different angles, so Plum did a fine job on this front.

Sculpting----------8/10
Painting----------7/10

All the other figures I've bought in this line have some very obvious flaws in either paint or sculpt, and while Airi has a few clear defects, it seems to me that her overall quality is somewhat better than that of her teammates.

I really like how Plum sculpted Airi's face. Her reddish-brown eyes are extremely expressive, and I also like how her mouth was sculpted, as it looks like she's biting her lip.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529061.jpeg

The big floppy bunny ears will draw the eye, and the corsage in Airi's hair provides some color. Additionally, Plum shaded Airi's hair nicely; brown hair sometimes ends up being dull and flat, but there are definitely some highlights in there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529063.jpeg

My Airi had a little dark spot on the back of her head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529065.jpeg

That piece of hair looks a litte bit awkward, but the headband-to-hair transition is handled well. That's sometimes a problem area.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529115.jpeg

The way Airi has her chest resting on her arm is sort of cute.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529117.jpeg

My Airi had a little piece of something hanging on to one of the tips of her hair. Fortunately, it was easy to remove. I guess something latched on there during the finishing process.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529119.jpeg

The way her flesh flattens against her arm gives an effective sense of weight. Looking carefully, you can see a little bit of excess material on Airi's fingers, but I didn't notice it before looking closely at this photo.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529121.jpeg

The fact that an outline of Airi's navel is very obvious suggests a very snug fit. Like the other figures in this line, the bunny suit would seem to be made of a very stretchy latex-like material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529180.jpeg

I like that little bulge in Airi's stomach. Given the skintight material, such a thing would almost certainly be there the way she's leaning over.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529184.jpeg

One thing that none of these Ro-Kyu-Bu bunny figures has gotten quite right is the lacing on the sides of the suits. On this figure, the lacing seems to have very little depth to it and the location of the lacing seems a little bit off the way it doesn't quite link up with the body of Airi's suit. Additionally, you can see how some of the white paint from the basketball charm found its way onto the red ribbon.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529182.jpeg

Some similar issues with the lacing on the other side of the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529188.jpeg

My Airi had a little dark spot on her thigh, although it did clean up with the assistance of a magic eraser.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529186.jpeg

I like the flower armband, but one of the flowers didn't get painted very well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529233.jpeg

Another constant in this line of figures has been some rather sloppy painting around the stocking tops.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529235.jpeg

Comparing this figure to the rest of Airi's teammates, it almost looks like her bunnysuit is the same size as the ones worn by her teammates, which would explain the extra-tight fit around her backside.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529237.jpeg

The way the material is bunching up is a nice little detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529239.jpeg

Airi is of course very self-conscious about herself, and wearing this bunny suit would presumably only amplify that character trait. Therefore, I like how she's using her hand to attempt to cover herself up.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529241.jpeg

The way her stockings are bunching up around the ankles in my mind further reinforces the fact that Airi's bunny outfit is undersized. It's as if the stockings are simply too small, and she had a hard time pulling them up all the way, hence the little bit of slack in the material around her ankles.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456529279.jpeg

Base----------7/10

For this line of figures, Plum has been alternating between two base designs (flat and hemispherical), and they go with the former for this figure.

You can see that two small pegs attach Airi to the base. Given the nontrivial weight of the figure, I would have preferred to see her screwed into the base. The fact that my Tomoka figure ITEM #250831 has the same base design and wants to detach from her base every time she's moved reinforces this opinion.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678137.jpeg

Airi's base compared with teammate Saki Nagatuka's ITEM #320011 hemisphere base. Surprisingly, the hemisphere bases seem much more stable, in part because of the larger pegs which are used.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678195.jpeg

The two different base styles does serve to mix things up a little bit, but I wish Plum would have also textured the flat bases.

Note how the two bases will look when displayed side by side. Also, the pink color of Airi's suit seems substantially more saturated than does the color of Saki's suit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678191.jpeg

Scale Comparison

At her tallest point, Airi is approximately 8.5 in (21.5 cm) tall. If Airi was standing upright, I estimate that she would be approximately 9.5 inches (24 cm) tall. At 1/7 scale, this would make Airi 5'6" (168 cm), which is spot-on with her canon height.

Airi and the rest of my Ro-Kyu-Bu bunnies. I really like how Plum didn't just duplicate the same basic pose for every character, and it seems to me these figures do an excellent job of capturing the characters' personalities! At this point, I'm missing only Hinata ITEM #287925, so I guess I'm obligated to track down that figure, although...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1455851952.jpeg

...I like the pink-black symmetry of this setup. You could imagine that team pink (Airi and Saki ITEM #320011) is ready to take on team black (Tomoka ITEM #250831 and Maho ITEM #302643) in a little two-on-two bunny basketball scrimmage :).

Nono Nekomiya ITEM #209 and Airi have radically different body types, but they do have some similar features, and I like the way they're both shyly trying to cover themselves up. Airi and Nono look quite cute together, don't they?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678371.jpeg

Nono is 1/6 scale, but she's supposed to be quite short.

Airi and Sena ITEM #106566 *do* have pretty similar physiques, but Sena isn't nearly so shy as Airi. Interestingly, Gift's magnificent 1/4 Sena ITEM #166954 depicts her in a pose that is quite similar to Airi's.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678306.jpeg

Airi flanked by a couple of demon girls :). Asmodeus ITEM #171477 is listed as 1/7, but she's really more like a largish 1/6, and Leviathan ITEM #195472 is also listed at 1/7 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678494.jpeg

I suspect that Airi would be mortified if someone tried to take a photo of her in that bunny outfit...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1456678647.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: In terms of quality, this Airi is probably the best figure yet in this line of figures, cute face, her pose is perfectly in character, and with Airi's release completionists can now have a complete set of Ro-Kyu-Bu girls.

Arguments against: The same flaws have been showing up on each of the figures in this line (the lacing on the suits, the ribbons on the stocking tops), lack of a uniform base design, and if you're a completionist, since there's only 5 main characters in the cast, once you buy one of these figures, you might have to get them all!

Overall, I'm really pleased with how Airi turned out, and if you like either Ro-Kyu-Bu or bunny figures in general, I'd strongly recommend this one.

Availability (as of this writing)

Still available new.

Airi seems to be sold out at AmiAmi and HLJ, but as of this writing, it looks like she can be had on Amazon Japan. MSRP is 9800 yen. Most of these Ro-Kyu-Bu bunnies have been pretty easy to find preowned as well, so you should have little trouble finding Airi. And like the rest of her teammates, Airi will also have a variant with a black bunny suit ITEM #372805. The black variant is scheduled for April 2016.

Maakie (1 ano atrás) #7273956Nice review! :) I adore her posing! The series is still on my I-should-watch-this-soon list. >.<

Ro-Kyu-Bu is a fun little show. It's not a landmark anime to be sure, but the characters are pretty memorable and it's a little bit unique as a sports anime featuring female characters. Based on some of the anime that I know you like, I'm pretty sure you'd like the show.

Foreverzero (1 ano atrás) #7177854Great indepth review. I was really surprised by her size, a bit bigger than I was expecting. Going to pick up Tomoka next. I also like the variations of Airi and Tomoka.

I really like the white variant of Tomoka ITEM #376791 but it looks like that one is going to be super-limited...

bambipie (1 ano atrás) #7169154I like your analysis of the suit size being small for the other girls. Thats really cute and the sculpt also suggests that.
Ive only gotten one figure wrapped in a plastic sleeve. It was from Jungle; the figure was used.

The same-size suit hypothesis was actually spawned from PICTURE #1489854 . In that photo, it sure looks like Airi and Saki are wearing the same size suit.

murialita (1 ano atrás) #7169146Thanks for the review. My Airi was supposed to be part of my Feb order, but I think AmiAmi got confused with Caster ITEM #287974, and instead of separating her out, turned the whole order into a March order. I'm leaving it be because it's much more convenient for me if they all ship together, and I only have to leave work early once to go to the post office and pick up the delivery. So no Airi for me yet.
I was wondering what your opinion of the reflection of her thighs on her bunny suit is. I'm not the biggest fan of camel toes, and while it doesn't look like there's one on her, that reflection seems to be taking the place of it. Maybe this isn't as much of an issue under normal, non-photography lighting?

The effect is fairly minimal.

Your AmiAmi story is kind of interesting. I wonder if they'll eventually realize what happened and split off the February items? I've had a few orders where it took them forever to split off delayed items, but I don't recall ever having a whole order moved to a later month.
