Sonico Gothic Maid 1/6 (Gift)Sonico Gothic Maid 1/6 (Gift)Review

I'm over 18
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422099.jpegToday we'll be taking a look at Gift's latest heroine, the ever popular Sonico. Her name is often spelled one of two ways, Sonico and Soniko. It seems to be used interchangeably from various sources. If you want to see an example, go to Hobby Search and search for both names. You'll get a ton of results for both. However for the purposes of this review since the packaging has her named Sonico we'll be referring to her by that spelling.

She was created in October 14th, 2006 by Tsuji Sanda to be a mascot for the Nitro Super Sonic music festival. The "live" music festival is held annually by Nitroplus. Ever since her creation she has gained more and more popularity becoming an event all onto herself. She even has a game called "SoniCom" where you act as her cameraman and shoot her.

I'm not sure if these are her official stats but supposedly she is 158cm tall. Her measurements in cm are B90 - W57 - H87. Her blood type is supposedly Type-A. No weight offered of course. 8Þ

Gift offered a few versions of this figure. There was this version with a bed base set, one without and another with the bed base and I believe a micro fiber towel which was limited and sold directly by Gift. For the purposes of this review we'll be looking at the standard release with the bed base set.

As mentioned she was a standard release at least for this version in April of 2012. She retailed for around 12,000 Yen and at this time she is available in very limited numbers from the few Japanese online stores that carry her. More than likely you'll have to look to the secondary market and foreign stores that carry figures if you wait too long. With so many Sonico figures out there and even more on the way, is this one worth considering?

Please understand a score of 10 will never be given as there is always room for improvement no matter how perfect a figure.

Gift took an interesting approach to the packaging. Since the figure is basically NSFW they had to be very selective in what was shown. The pictures used were cropped or framed in such a way to entice you but still keeping it safe. Talk about a tease... And the only full shot of her was carefully positioned so again you were given a relatively safe view of her. Of course the front opens up like a book placing panties even if out of focus right in your face. They employed one window that you could barely see into. I think they could have made it larger considering the flap design. The artwork and logos were fitting for the figure and character and supported her theme nicely. The same can be said for the color scheme as it seems inline with the character and outfit. For display purposes I suppose the box looks nice enough you could probably use it for display purposes but you basically have to take her out.

Packaging weight and dimensions:
Weight: 765 Grams
H: 250 mm
W: 175 mm
D: 173 mm

A lightweight, non-corrugated cardboard was used for the packaging. However, since the only window panel was basically reinforced with multiple layers of cardboard it did not play a factor in reducing overall protection. Compression resistant was excellent from all sides. You would basically have to damage the packaging on purpose. The size of the packaging was fairly compact and just big enough to protect the figure. Weight isn't bad considering the contents. They achieved a decent balance between size, weight and protection. When empty the packaging weighs about the same as the figure and base. Shipping weight is probably going to be 1 to 1.5 Kg. Even if they pack her badly she should get to you safely while keeping costs reasonable.

The excellent protection was due to the blister used. You had the typical two piece blister with an additional two interlocking blister nestled within the first. With so many layers concentrated in one area, her protection was basically assured. A decent amount of plastic was used to protect the figure from rubbing and paint transfer. Tape was also used to hold the blister pieces. Note that they hide the misc items under the base providing a clear view of the figure.

Instructions were included which was appreciated. However, what they showed in them I think you could have figured out on your own. Unless it was the part where I can't read, I wish they would have told you how to tie the bow. In case the instructions do not tell you how to tie the bow. I found the best result to do it from behind her. If you tie it from behind it only requires a minor adjustment to make it match the picture. If you do it from the front it will be upside down. Then again I guess it depends on how people tie bows? Basically if your bow ends up upside down tie it from the opposite side to compensate.

Gift did a nice job overall. The figure is well protected and it looks good at the same time. They achieved a decent balance between protection, size and weight. She should get to you without breaking the bank. Expectations were met and exceeded.

Sculpting: 9/10 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♡
Sculpting credits go to Kondou Takayuki aka G-DOME who has been working with figures for over a decade. Now I don't know about you but I've only found his figures from 2009 and on appealing. Anything before then just didn't garner my interest. Even then I still find some of the recent girls lacking in one way or another. Below you can see some of the girls he's worked on and coincidentally all 1/4th in scale. He's worked on figures of various scales but I do notice he does like to work with the larger scale figures. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what to expect?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423952.jpeg

There were no sculpting issues to report, well as far as I can tell especially with her pose... Let's start with her lovely face. Of all the Sonico's I currently own I have to say this one has the best face yet. Now that might change once I receive my native Sonico but for the time being this one reigns supreme. I love the job they did on her mouth. It just holds everything else together from her expression and other features. From various profiles she just looks good I don't think I can find a bad angle for her lovely face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422110.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422099.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422106.jpeg
Her hair is sufficiently detailed considering her hairstyle. Her maid headdress covers the typical seam you find with most figures at the top of her head. I love the integration of her headphones with that headdress. The details and execution on the ear pieces alone were just fantastic. They look so realistic especially the metallic parts. I think those are some of the best headphones I've seen on a figure to date.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422114.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422115.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422117.jpeg
Now due to her pose it's very difficult to see her outfit. It looks like she's wearing a pretty standard maid outfit except the front of her blouse is opened and her amble/pendulous breasts spilled out. From what I can see her outfit is sufficiently detailed and if she was in an upright pose it would have looked pretty good especially considering her figure. Look at the frilly apron and that big bow. And of course that skimpy skirt of hers.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422039.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422041.jpeg
Her bra barely covers those pendulous breasts of hers. I'm glad to see they actually used straps for the bra instead of carving it out of her breasts like you see on some swimsuit figures. I find it interesting that her bra basically matches her maid outfit. I guess they make maid bras? I think the biggest thing is her breasts do not seem to be defying gravity. They are of course the typical teardrop shape but it's probably hard to tell due to their size and the way they are lying. Now it's hard to see but you can see the shape of her nipples through the bras.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422089.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422085.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422081.jpeg
Now it's not really possible with the right cup, but the left bra cup can be shifted to reveal that her breasts are actually detailed underneath. If desired you can force cast off the bra. If you are careful with where you break/cut the straps it can be placed back with hardly a notice. This is because her right leg is pressing against the bra holding it in place against her breast. Now I do not recommend you do it but if you want the option then it's fairly "easy" to do. Now I do wonder why they went this route as looking at the bra they could have easily made it a removable without having to do a forced cast off? It's not like they're trying to protect her image considering the pose and what is already exposed. I mean why did they bother making her breasts detailed in the first place?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423903.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423898.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423902.jpeg
Moving on down to her fancy panties, I don't think it's possible to miss how detailed she is down there. Also the fancy frilly lace help with the transition from her panties to her curvy thighs. Unlike her bra straps, her straps for her stockings are unfortunately carved out of her legs. I really wish they would have used separate straps as it definitely would have added more to the details.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422053.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422063.jpeg
Besides her face, the other main attraction is her lovely legs. They are long, full of curves and nicely detailed. The transition from the thighs to the stockings was seamless and it actually looks like the stockings are digging into her thighs. The overall shape of those legs are just plain sexy. Note the detailing in her shoes as well from the stitching in the soles to the tacks in the heels. I just love the body lines you get from her legs, the silhouette is so sexy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422067.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422072.jpeg
G-DOME and Gift did a nice job overall. She was assembled competently without any issues that I could see and I doubt she will vary much between figures in that regard. The only real sculpting "issue" I had was with her stockings in particular the straps. I really wish they would have made them separate pieces so they could stand out better. She easily has the best face currently for any Sonico figure and makes for a very comely lass. Expectations were met and possibly exceeded.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422096.jpeg

I will admit I was very concerned in this area. My prior experience with figures by G-DOME and GSC has been mixed. I know this is a Gift figure but they are under the GSC umbrella and probably used the same resources to color their figures. However, it looks like at least for this figure my worries were just that and nothing more. They used all the tools available to color her competently.

Starting with that lovely face you can see they placed her eyes precisely and they are easily the main attraction. I love the job they did with coloring her mouth as well. Her complexion is just perfect and I can't get enough of looking at that cute face of hers. As you can see her hair isn't one flat color but various shades and gradations giving it depth and dimension. Look at the lovely job they did on her headphones making them look very realistic. The white stitching on her headdress and bra seems to be either something they stenciled or a decal. They did such a precise job I just can't tell the difference.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422099.jpeg
Her flesh as mentioned was tinted nicely and airbrushed to accentuate her curves and details. Look at the nice job they did on her breasts and thighs. Look at the accents and shading to assist with the transition from her thighs to the stockings. Her flesh appears consistent with the other Sonico figures. Look at those stockings and the shading used to bring out the details such as the bend in her knee.

My only "issue" ties in with the only sculpting "issue" I had with the figure. The straps for her stockings was not only carved out of her leg but they didn't do such a good job painting them either. I don't like it but this appears to be a typical practice that is used all the time.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422063.jpeg
Look at some of the other areas hand painted such as bed frame and ribbon on her panties. They were done pretty precisely in contrast to those straps...

In any case they did a very nice job overall coloring this figure. They employed all of the tools available to color her and her flesh tone was consistent throughout the figure. My main concern was previous figures by this sculptor and GSC was very amateurish and basically enraged me due to their great cost. I'm glad this time around this was not the case and from what I can see I doubt this will vary between figures. The high point is definitely her lovely face and those sexy legs of hers. Expectations were exceeded this time around.

Posing: 9/10 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♡
What can I say? Her pose is definitely interesting... You basically have two options for displaying her. With or without her bra. The actual pose itself is pretty suggestive especially considering she's dressed as a maid, meaning a subservient role. Bound, exposed and vulnerable. Her skirt hiked up exposing her panties that do little to hide the details beneath with what looks like her blouse ripped open as she look at you with those big eyes pleading as she awaits her fate.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422137.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423940.jpeg
However as you can see her legs basically block most of the view. You're forced to choose between getting a good view of her face or a partial view of the rest of her including her face. Now even a partial view of her face is still pretty good and you get the benefit of seeing the rest of her as well. This is definitely true if you decide to cast her off.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423893.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423898.jpeg
Another thing about display angles is if you display her too high up, she looks quite weird like she's trying to stick her head up her butt... However, if you take a step back and view her from the side profile the pose actually looks "normal" in that anyone could do it. It actually looks like she's stretching or exercising. Especially without the context of the bed and ribbon. So I guess if you're concerned about how she'll look that's one safe way to display her as it looks like she's just exercising.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422043.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422033.jpeg
At the same time if you display her too low you miss out on her lovely face. This is about as low as you can go while still getting a view of her face. Basically she's best displayed at eye level or near it. The hardest thing will probably be whether you want her displayed head on or from the side. The side profile definitely looks more "normal" compared to the head on but as mentioned you miss out on her lovely face if not viewed from the front.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422140.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/07/423939.jpeg
I'll give it to G-DOME as the pose was definitely interesting. Considering she looks different depending on the profile and angle as well as whether she's on the bed or not, you definitely have a lot of display options. I just wish they didn't make her forced cast off and just offered a normal option. The main attraction is definitely her face and expression of hers. That alone was worth it. Expectations were met I suppose.

Base: 9/10 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♡
This time around the base definitely adds and supports the theme of the figure. Without the base the dynamics of the figure definitely change. She's just not as obscene without it. It's composed of two pieces and it's fairly straightforward to assemble. However it's still pretty small when you see another 1/6th scale figure try to use it. The footprint is pretty small which helps with giving you more areas to display her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422011.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422025.jpeg
Now I don't know about you but I was actually given two ribbons. If that's actually the norm you basically have an extra ribbon to decorate her further. Tying her up was actually fairly easy. The only issue I ran into was the bow. As mentioned if yours ends up upside down, just tie it from the opposite direction. The bow isn't required to hold her in place as the mattress has an indentation of the bottom part of her to recess into. However, it definitely does help secure her if you have to move her around.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422013.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422094.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422095.jpeg
Now a pleasant surprise for me was the bed was a perfect base for another Sonico figure. I wish OrchidSeed would have offered something like this as it seemed more fitting for their figure than the plain base they offered.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422022.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422019.jpeghttp://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/05/422024.jpeg
As mentioned the base definitely supports the theme of the figure and without it the figure would have been something different. It looks good and doesn't take up much room. And if desired you could probably use it for some other figures for their base instead. As far as I can tell the base looks exactly like the prototype so my expectations were definitely met.

Enjoyment: 9/10 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♡
At the beginning I mentioned there were a number of Sonico figures to choose from and the objective was to see if this one was worth considering. As an owner of some of the other figures released to date I have to say this one definitely has one of the better face/expressions. Now the OrchidSeed girls are up there as well but if I had to choose between them it probably be a toss up with the OrchidSeed Bondage and this one. However I do like the face on this one slightly more. For how much she cost I'd have to say she was worth it and I do not regret getting her. In fact I ordered another one since I did force cast off this one. There were no real sculpting or painting issues unless you consider my nitpick about the stocking straps. Her fit and finish was definitely top notch and from packaging to figure my expectations were met and exceeded.

Looks pretty great! I'm actually slightly disappointed that her shoes turned out to be loafers instead of boots, though (I've only looked at photos of the intended display angle beforehand).

Nice! But the forced cast-off is annoying, blame on you Orchid :(
