First 4 Figures: Modern SonicFirst 4 Figures: Modern SonicReview

It's been about 1 month since my last figure review. I have been super busy with some project ranging from de-junking the house, re-designing my room, selling stuff, and designing a display case I plan to build. But I am finally back with the review you have been so patiently waiting for. Today, we shall look at one of the top 10 favorite items in my whole collection. The 15 inch tall polystone statue of Sonic the Hedgehog by First 4 Figures! *insert title screen theme*

Now let's get this statue out of the box and see the treasure inside.

Wow! Now this is a pretty statue. Look at all of those colors. Look at Sonic's cocky grin.
I am instantly in love with this statue!

Let's start our examination from the bottom. What we have here is a vibrant and detailed base themed after the Emerald Coast level from Sonic Adventure.

I enjoy this base very much. The colors are vibrant, the use of shading on the grass makes it look realistic and the rippling effect of Sonic's feet making contact with the sand as he runs seems accurate to the physics of what sand would actually be doing when one runs on it. This statue has one of the most stylish bases I have seen for any figure or statue. You can practically hear the music from the level in your head when you look at this base.

You can see two small spots on the grass where it seems the paint has been either chipped or smudged off. There will always be some tiny paint defects with hand painted stuff like this. But these spots are only noticeable when you take pictures of them. In person, they are too small to really notice. So they do not bother me.

Now let's take a look at the blue blur himself. We shall start with his face.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1562536.jpeg
I have always loved Sonic's cocky smart ass attitude. I think it is his most endearing trait and F4F has perfectly brought the blue dude's attitude to this statue.

A nice bonus I discovered about this statue is how many different ways you can display him and how expressive it can be simply by rotating it. Have him running to the left, his default position, he is looking at you with that signature cocky grin.

Have him facing towards you, he looks to the right. You could make it look like he is running around another item in your collection.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1561979.jpeg

Rotate the statue 180 degrees and he looks super serious. Looks like he is running to attack one of Eggman's mechs.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1561965.jpeg

You can also put him next to F4F's Shadow the Hedgehog statue to make a display of the two hedgehogs charging towards each other.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1562025.jpeg
This is my favorite way to have both of these statues on display. The perfect center for any Sonic or Sega collection. :D

It is rare that you get a static statue with no alternate parts that has such diversity in how to display it. I am not sure if this was intentional or just a happy accident in its design, but I love it. It is the best feature about this statue.

Oh, Chibi-Rin. Get your finger out of Sonic's nose, you silly girl. :P

Now let's take a look at his glorious hair. o3o
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1561996.jpeg

Sonic is a dude that understand the importance of hair care and looking sexy, so please forgive the bits of dust you can see on him. Those nooks between his hair can be hard to clean. o-o

I think F4F has done a nice job translating Sonic's thick and bouncy hair into statue form. The only problem is that since this is all a smooth surface, his fur does not really look like fur. I think it would have looked much nicer if the sculpt included the series of small hair grooves on his body we usually see on the CG renders of most of the characters.

But this is a detail that is not really necessary for a Sonic figure. When I stop to think about it, that might be one of those details that would not translate so well into figure form and is best to leave out. But I guess we will never know until someone makes a Sonic figure with that detail in his fur.

Looking at the rest of his body, I think that the paint and sculpt overall is great. Not a lot of shading, but very little was needed in the first place. As they say, "less is more." :3

Sonic's shoes have been crafted nicely, but I think they could have used a glossy coating. Sonic's shoes usually have some shine to them. But a simple color coating gets the job done nicely. :3

The desired gloss coating I mentioned has been implemented in the newest installment to this product line, Modern Super Sonic. Click here for my review of that super awesome statue.

One small issue I do have with this statue is that the white paint on his hands have some spots where they glob and fuse parts of the fingers together. Looks kinda weird.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1562003.jpeg

But other than that spot, I think the gloves are great. :3

My final verdict? This is among the greatest and most beautiful pieces of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise. An absolute must have for any fan of the franchise.
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2016/06/16/1562024.jpeg
Sure this franchise has fallen to a state of mediocrity over the past several years, but that will never change the fact that Sonic is a legendary icon of the video game industry. Let us not forget his early years where his games were among the most amazing and revolutionary of their time. Let us not forget the amazing and intense console wars between Nintendo and Sega. How Sonic the Hedgehog became the first game franchise to truly challenge Nintendo's dominance in this market and Mario in popularity.

No matter how far the hedgehog may fall, let us never forget how high he has soared and everything he has accomplished. If you appreciate the history of this franchise, you will love having this statue.

If you are now interested in getting one of these for yourself, the only place I can find it still available is just on the F4F website. Both the regular and exclusive edition are surprisingly still available there. I have actually owned an exclusive edition before and personally think the standard look nicer. While the light up of the exclusive is cool, the colors of the base look a bit off when the lights are not on. The spark looks more like a light orange crystal and the water looks a bit murky. But that is just my opinion.

Thank you for reading this review. I hope you enjoyed it. But the reviewing fun does not stop there. Click here for my review of the Shadow statue you saw earlier. Two reviews in one day. Woo! :D

I recently started playing Sonic again (since the age of awful-mediocre Sonic games seems to have mostly passed and Sonic adventure 2 is on PC) and it really reminds me of how much I loved the Sonic franchise. I just realized it's my 2nd biggest franchise after Touhou - which is very impressive. I feel bad for putting him aside for the past 4 years.

I definitely plan on getting this figure, he looks great. His price is killer though, so I don't think I can do it soon... Why is he so expensive... Are the sonic figures being rerealeased? There are so many of them available on F4F all of a sudden. Although Metal Sonic isn't available :|

I honestly never thought about it before, but it would seem that you are correct. :3
