The front of the packaging shows cute artwork, while the back shows a small-printed version of the instructions.

Also really useful to add is that the manufacturer of these sets, has a lot of English translated instructions on their official website: www.nerune.jp/p... ! You can find the specific one for Takoyaki here www.nerune.jp/p... .

Even without translations or basic Japanese reading ability you could probably find out the steps for yourself by looking at the pictures on the packaging. But having an English version is extremely useful!

This set comes with the following parts:
- Plastic tray for mixing, baking and measuring
- A wooden pick for flipping and eating the finished takoyaki
- A plastic square spoon for mixing
- Dough powder mix
- Mayonaisse powder mix
- Octopus powder mix
- (Worcester?) Sauce powder mix

I also recommend having a bottle of water next to you (for easier measuring) and a plate on the table you are working on. This can get messier than it looks like!

I started off with making the octopus and damn, it was smelling bad!! The powder itself barely had any kind of smell and the moment I started mixing it, there came off this really bad fish-smell...like fish way past expiration date. It really makes you wonder what is in those bags with powder...on the other hand, I probably don't want to know.

The plastic tray comes with a mold to press the 'octopus' in. It leaves quite some residue for the sides, so if you want perfect octopusleg-shaped pieces, you will need a knife to cut those parts loose.

According to the instructions you can make 8 pieces. I had a lot of octopus leftovers, probably I could have easily made 10.

The mayonnaise also had quite a strong smell. It also took a lot of mixing to be completely smooth (picture made mid-mixing).

The mayonnaise packaging needs to be folded 3 times at specific lines and then has to be placed upright. That last part wasn't as easy as it sounds and I had to cram the bag inbetween heavy bottles to keep it from falling.

Mixing the dough was very easy. I have to admit it doesn't really look tasty on the picture...

And then it was time to combine the bunch! Apparently I was too generous with pouring the dough, resulting in having only enough dough for 7 pieces of Takoyaki instead of 8...

This was the result after a short blast of microwave radiation. I was actually surprised to see them become so big!

While the takoyaki was cooling down, I made the sauce. This one also didn't look very appetizing while mixing...

Time to smother that stuff in multiple kinds of sauces, yeah! I didn't even use all of the sauce in the packaging here.

End result and tasting

I was pretty pleased with the end result! All parts of making the kit went quite smooth, I actually think this is my most flawless DIY kit so far! My only 'mistake' was overpouring the dough, which is why I had 1 piece less.

And now for the taste...

I was very impressed with the taste and structure of the dough! The dough was also the best flavor of the set in my opinion. The octopus however...I get shivers thinking back of it! I checked the packaging over and over and the set was not even close to expiration date! I'm not sure if Japanese fish in general smells so different from the fish we have here, but it really felt like something was...not good with the octopus. After a short taste I didn't eat the rest of it (and just nibbled away the dough around it).

As for the sauces, they were a bit too much in my opinion. Especially the mayonaisse was overpowering in taste. The Worcester sauce (where I am actually thinking it was more like soy sauce), was pretty nice. If I would re-do the kit, I wouldn't throw so much of both sauces on it!

Conclusion

This set was incredibly fun to make! When it comes to the taste, I was very mixed. Some parts I liked a lot (the dough), while others were horrible (the octopus). Anyway, if you are creative and have the possibility to pick one of these up, I would still recommend it for the fun experience!

Bonus mini review: Crayon Shin Chan Science Chemistry Set Drink

As this was a small set, I didn't make any pictures for an extensive review.

This set was very similar to the 'Fake Beer Namaiki (Cheeky) Drink' set, which I have reviewed a while ago: blog/19021

Inside the packaging you will find a chemistry beaker and a package with powder. You only have to add water to the powder.

Shortly after adding the powder, the drink will change to a few colors. I guess you can already drink it right away, but I waited until I saw the changing was finished.

The drink itself was incredibly sweet and lemonade-like, really a drink for children. I don't think much adults would fully enjoy such a teeth-crushing sugar bomb!

The flask is an interesting part, as it can be washed and re-used...but watch out there! It is not even close to the quality of the cup/mug that was given with the fake beer set! Hand-wash with not too hot water only!

So for the conclusion of this mini review, I would recommend Shin Chan fans to rather grab the Fake Beer DIY kit than this chemistry set!

shiroiusagi (8 meses atrás) #19269741I just made those takoyaki candy because I remembered having it after reading your article^^
My octopus bits smelled pretty good though. I didn't put too much sauce on them and they were really tasty :)

Looking at the replies I've got I'm either over-sensitive to fish-smell or I got a bad/expired set. xD

Pomelo (8 meses atrás) #19229284Nice review! I've tried a few of these myself, and so far I've only liked the pudding and the chocolate set you have pictured. The taste in most of these are so-so, but I can't get over the weird crumbly/powdery texture they seem to have.
I have the takoyaki one sitting around, I've been too afraid to try it...I'm not even sure why I bought it tbh since I HATE seadfood lol. Your review is making me think I should give it to someone as a gift or something.

Thank you! :)

The chocolate set was so nice, I will blog about that one soon too! <3 As for the structure of the chocolate, I've had that also with multiple non-DIY Japanese chocolate snacks. I think it's a more normal type of chocolate in Japan?

This one was really fun to make, so I advice you to also go for it! I ended up eating not even half of this kit, so don't feel guilty lol.

I think Shin chan is sending the wrong message to kids...
LOL

Coffee (8 meses atrás) #19220860I've tried the takoyaki kit and had to spit it out because I really couldn't handle the taste.
Definitely the worst DIY "candy" kit I've tried.

I managed to swallow one full bite. After that it became nibbling on the dough only.

I'm not sure if this was my worst, but definitely one of my least favorites...

victorviper (8 meses atrás) #19221483The finished product certainly came out *looking* much more like takoyaki than I imagined it would. At first, I thought it was going to be something sweet that just looked like takoyaki.
If you take two bags of mystery substance which individually have no odor but suddenly have a pungent fish odor when mixed together, you have to wonder a little bit what sort of chemical reaction is going on there! The ingredients might be pretty close to the ingredients in that bottle of skin cream you were using to prop up the mayonnaise bag :).

Ah no! Maybe I should have explained that better in the opening of this blog. This is one of the 'realistic' sets that tries to taste as much as the real deal as possible!

When I was holding up the mayonnaise I thought "the mayo looks a lot like my skin cream", ahaha! Well, in contradiction, my skin cream does smell nice. :P

Macavy (8 meses atrás) #19222448That's the worst Poppin Cookin' kit I've ever tried, and will never try again if I can help it. I much prefer the sweet ones to the savory.

I actually prefer the savory ones. The hamburger and pizza set I made before were pretty nice, but this one was horrible. I am actually disappointed in the taste, as I did have fun making it. :(

isameille (8 meses atrás) #19227224Powdered octopus, oh my...I don't even like that imitation crab meat stuff, so I can only imagine *shudders* I feel like I would definitely stick to the sweet versions of these as well.

I don't know if this was real octopus that was powdered or just something artificial that was supposed to taste like octopus. D:

solluxcaptor (8 meses atrás) #19227248These sets look kind of fun but honestly anyone who tries eating them has far more bravery than me...

The first time I made one of these savory kits I was too brave and stuffed too much inside my mouth. And then I found out the taste was horrible! Now I'm way more careful when trying these.

CrimsonPumpkin (8 meses atrás) #19227772I've tried this one before (long time ago) and I really liked it! Of course it doesn't taste like real takoyaki AT ALL!!
I followed the instructions very carefully and never found a problem with smells or "visuals". It is savory and the sauces help greatly to the finishing taste, of course not everybody can like it.
What bothers me it's your octopus powder how smelly it was, mine was never like that it had a really subtle smell of fish like you have to really stick your nose closely to get the hint of it, maybe there was a problem with yours?
Still it was a fun read and I love these sets, especially those that taste almost like the real thing.
My favourite so far is the taiyaki and dango! :3

Really makes me think I got a bad set then...maybe it wasn't stored in good conditions by the seller of the product (I got it from a local reseller instead of importing myself from Japan which I usually do).

I really liked making the taiyaki and dango ones! One I would really like to try soon myself is the noodle meal set!

Azukay (8 meses atrás) #19227777Takoyaki candy? That doesn't sound good. I would rather eat real takoyaki.

It's not actual candy I guess. ;) It's supposed to taste like the real thing!
