Union Creative Reika Shimohira "X-Shotgun"

victorvipervictorviper8 meses atrásReview
Today, we'll be reviewing a figure that has generated quite a bit of buzz on MFC, Union Creative's Reika Shimohira. Reika hails from the Gantz anime, and if you know Gantz, you know that a skintight Gantz suit provides an effective defense against all sorts of alien hazards. Therefore, Reika's body-hugging supersuit means that many of the shots below could be considered somewhat NSFW.

About the character: Reika Shimohira is a character from the Gantz media franchise. Depending on your point of view, she comes on the scene either early or late in the story, first showing up in the Gantz room in chapter 134 of the manga, brought to the Gantz room after being caught in a gunman's rampage in Shinjuku. In her life before Gantz, she was a popular idol, and she is sufficiently famous that many denizens of the Gantz room recognize her instantly. She proves to be a surprisingly skilled fighter, participating in many missions and earning many Gantz "points".

This figure depicts Reika as she appears in the 2014 CGI movie Gantz:O. That film gives the characters a little bit less of an anime look and that fact will be significant.

Anyway, the Gantz clock is running, so let's get to the figure!

Packaging----------8/10

Union Creative goes with a simple box design, featuring the name of the franchise and the name of the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402346.jpeg

The side of the box features an interesting design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402348.jpeg

The solid black back panel, the Gantz sphere, and the red lettering make for a bold look.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402350.jpeg

Hiroya Oku, author of the Gantz manga is known to draw very intricate stuff much like this insert inside the box.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402352.jpeg

The blister does its job adequately, but as you can see it is a little bit flimsy. When standing, it almost wants to deform under its own weight. Interestingly, the blister wasn't taped together!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402354.jpeg

The box is large, as this is not a small figure, but it's not outrageously heavy. The box measures 34 by 20 by 20 cm and the package weighs about 600 grams.

Base----------7.5/10

I've gone back and forth about the base. It is rather plain, but then again, the plain black design does complement the figure. I was a little worried about the short pegs, but Reika seems to attach to the base pretty securely and there were no indications of wobble when moving around the figure.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402424.jpeg

The base, however, is quite large, measuring about 5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter. It is also quite thick, measuring almost 1 centimeter in depth! It's also worth noting that I had to bend one of Reika's legs a little bit to get her properly seated on the base. That's never a fun thing to have to do...

Posing----------8/10

Reika is rather cavalierly holding her trusty X-gun. While I'm not sure if holding the weapon like that is really a good idea, Reika was after all an idol in her pre-Gantz life and so perhaps she still retains a little flair for the dramatic.

Let's have a look at her.

Union Creative will be releasing a second Reika soon ITEM #527208 where she is posed identically but showing a lot more bare skin and wielding a Gantz Sword. It makes more sense to hold a sword that way, and I wonder how many people were dissuaded from buying both figures because of the recycled pose...

In any event, the pose is kind of cool, and Reika looks good from a number of vantage points. So, double-dipping concerns aside, there are no real complaints on this front.

Sculpting----------8.5/10
Painting----------8/10

I own only one other Union Creative figure, their Meiko Shiraki ITEM #285894, and that figure has some definite quality control issues. I was pleased to see that Reika was significantly better in that regard, although there are some issues here and there. Fortunately, these flaws are counterbalanced by some very neat features.

Without a doubt, the most controversial aspect of this figure will be the design of Reika's face. Gantz:O goes for a more realistic look, but I can't help thinking that the design of her face falls a little short (see PICTURE #1650188 for Reika's "true" apperance). In fairness, it can be difficult to pull off more realistic character features in figure form, but even modulo that, I think she looks rather cold and unemotive.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402480.jpeg

On the other hand, Reika's face looks okay when viewed from different angles. From this angle, her expression doesn't look nearly so lifeless.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402484.jpeg

The photo above does illustrate an interesting quirk of this figure. If you look at Reika's MFC page, you will see that "broken spine" appears as a tag. Her lower back and upper back form a nearly 90 degree angle, and I'm pretty sure that most humans can't bend their spines this way! Maybe she does yoga :).

At first, I thought that spot in Reika's hair didn't get completely painted, but upon closer inspection there was some kind of white material in that seam where the parts of her hair meet. I'm guessing it's some sort of residue that is supposed to protect the plastic and it's supposed to be cleaned off before the figure is assembled. Most of it cleaned off with a white paper towel, but you will see plenty of other spots where there are little bits of funk coating the figure. Not a painting defect, but it *does* speak to some QC issues...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402482.jpeg

The way her hair is whipping around suggests she's turning around quickly. Also, it looks like the butt of the shotgun is supposed to rest against her hand, but the gun doesn't want to stay in place all that well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402486.jpeg

The high collar is a key feature of the Gantz suit. The suit will power up the user and provide protection against damage that would otherwise be lethal. The blue nodules on the suit are its power source, and if those are damaged, the corresponding areas of the suit will become vulnerable.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402527.jpeg

We've seen some QC issues with the figure, but I promised that Reika also has some really neat features, and one area where Union Creative did a great job is with Reika's body sculpt. The Gantz suit is skintight, and I like the little bulge in her stomach that would surely be there the way she's twisting her back. I also really like how her outfit contains a mix of matte and shiny black finishes! The base suit *resembles* a neoprene-like material and the shiny layer resembles latex, but the Gantz suits are of course an alien technology and so the suit would be made of some much more advanced polymer.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402529.jpeg

If I was being picky, I would note that the transitions where her breasts meet the rest of her body could have been done better.

Someone at Union Creative really paid a lot of attention to Reika's lower torso! With the skintight material, the cameltoe effect would realistically be there, and those are some killer thighs! The "cup holders" around Reika's thighs are pretty much standard Gantz-issue; those can be used to holster small arms or scanning equipment.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402531.jpeg

Some more of that white funk around those thighbands. It cleaned up okay, but you can see a little bit of a gap where those bands meet her thighs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402533.jpeg

If you like butts, then this figure will not disappoint, as that is some killer sculpting on her thighs and backside! The thong back on her outfit is another eye-catching feature and I like how you can see the material in the thong bunching up.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402535.jpeg

The thong doesn't pull a disappearing act, which is nice. Also note the sculpting on her inner thigh.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402580.jpeg

One negative of the all-black finish is that it will show every little speck of dust. I had the figure sitting out overnight on my kitchen table, and you can see that little bits of dust had accumulated. Thus, I'd say that Reika needs to be housed inside a case unless you like dusting your figures all the time.

Reika was an idol in her old life, and she proves to be a capable fighter, so it's no surprise that she has very toned calves. I like the detail behind her knees, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402582.jpeg

I really like the design of the shoes that go with the Gantz suit. The next time I'm in need of a new pair of tennis shoes, I might have to look for a pair with a black and blue color scheme like this! If you look closely, however, you can see some excess glue on her leg near where her shoe attaches.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402584.jpeg

In the Gantz universe, Reika's weapon is known as an X-gun. The X-gun comes in two configurations; one is the size of a large-caliber handgun, and this one is sometimes referred to as the X-shotgun. As with a conventional projectile weapon, the long version of the weapon has enhanced range. One peculiarity of the X-gun is that there is a time lag associated with its use; newcomers to the Gantz game are often surprised that when firing the X-gun at a target at point blank range, their shots may not find their mark for several seconds.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402586.jpeg

The detail on the butt of the gun is good, and I like the little rivets and screws in its headstock. The "bolt" there is articulated and can rotate in about a 180 degree arc.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402588.jpeg

A view of the other side of the shotgun. Note the distinctive curved scope.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402618.jpeg

The little rings on the end of the barrel are standard for Gantz weapons. Note how the painting on the blue parts of the barrel gets a little bit sloppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402620.jpeg

Scale Comparison

From the bottom of the base to the end of the stock of the X-gun, the figure spans approximately 11.5 inches (29 cm). The way she's leaning back, I estimate Reika herself would be about 10.5 inches (26 2/3 cm) tall. Assuming that she's just over 5 feet tall, this would make her 1/6-ish in scale. It *is* canonically established that Reika has a 34 inch (86 cm) bust, and since you need to know these things, I measure Reika's bust at 14 cm, so I'd call her scale 1/6.

Reika and Alter's Maia Mizuki ITEM #944, who is a largish 1/6 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402656.jpeg

Weapon + thong + cool shoes, what's not to like?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402658.jpeg

Sega's Yoko Littner ITEM #155931 is also 1/6-ish in scale, and I really like how Yoko and Reika look together!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402695.jpeg

I own exactly two Union Creative figures, namely Reika and Meiko Shiraki ITEM #285894. Meiko is supposed to be close to 6 feet tall and that figure is at the large side of 1/6 scale to boot, so she's more like 1/5.5 to the eye. If you read my review of Meiko, you will see that she has no shortage of flaws and thankfully Reika compares favorably in that regard.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402754.jpeg

Both Reika and Inia Sestina ITEM #96904 are well-armed young ladies. Inia is 1/7 scale, and you can see that Reika is much larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402794.jpeg

The outfits worn by Tomoka Minato ITEM #250831 and Saki Nagatsuka ITEM #320011 may not be superpowered, but like Reika's Gantz suit they appear to be made from a rubbery material. Tomoka and Saki are both 1/7 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402867.jpeg

I have to think the design of the Gantz suit was inspired in some part by the iconic plugsuits worn by the Evangelion cast. Asuka ITEM #141607 is 1/6 scale, and you can see that she and Reika are pretty similar scale-wise.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491402960.jpeg

Reika with a Taito prize figure of the character ITEM #132347. The Taito Reika is equipped with the Z-gun, which is a substantial upgrade over the X-gun. The Z-gun uses gravitation to pancake its target, and unlike the X-gun, there is no time delay associated with its use.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1491423885.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: The world needs more Gantz figures, incredible body sculpt, and the two-tone black outfit really makes the figure stand out and it is super sexy to boot.

Arguments against: The all-black outfit will show every single speck of dust, her pose and the way she's holding the shotgun are a little bit unnatural, the gun doesn't really want to stay in place very well, and her face could have been better done.

I like Gantz, and the cool weapon + thong + body sculpt enticed me to roll the dice and pre-order this figure. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this figure, although you might need to be a Gantz aficionado to really appreciate it to its fullest.

Availability (as of this writing)

Still available new.

As I write this, the big three (AmiAmi, Hobby Search, and HLJ) still list Reika as being in stock and available. Union Creative is also scheduled to release a version of Reika ITEM #527208 wielding a Gantz sword and without the base layer of the Gantz suit in April 2017. Personally, I think I prefer the version with the full suit, but that's a matter of taste.

victorviper (6 meses atrás) #21703605I think I would have preferred Reika's face to be more like her manga self, as trying to do more realistic faces *well* is just a really tough thing to do. I went back and forth, but I ultimately decided to pass on the bare skin variant since this one still has the awesome body sculpt, it stands out more IMO, and my shelves are getting too crowded to be double-dipping on figures...
As far as ITEM #559900 goes, I'm still making up my mind. I already have the other Yamashita Rei ITEM #242 and I just can't quite decide if the new one is that much different...
I wonder if there's another Yamashita Asuka on the horizon? The kind of flat butt on the other one ITEM #28128 always kind of bothered me, especially since Yamashita figures tend to be so booty-tastic :).
I am a sucker for variants (for many figures I have between 3 to 8 variants) which is a huge drain one space and money. In this case I could not make up my mind between the two and knew I was going to end up wanting both. This variant is more interesting because it is not just a color difference but an outfit difference and and a weapon difference.

Most Yamashita figures are consistently strong in the face department but in booty deparment there are some good ones but many are too flat which is why I never ended up getting ITEM #28128 even though I have ITEM #242 as well which features one of the very best Ayanami Rei faces. While ITEM #559900 is a very different figure, you have a good point that the faces may be rather similar. I went for the version with both faces, so hopefully at least one works out well.

loveanime (6 meses atrás) #21696160Thanks for another great review! Glad I pre-ordered both. I think they nailed everything, especially the rear view, except for the face which had the potential to be so much more than the official pictures, which in turn are still better than the face on the actual figure. That said, I would still have ordered both given the irresistible body sculpt which more than makes up that. Now I am hoping the face of ITEM #559900 will be at least as good as the official pictures because I pre-ordered her mainly for her lovely face and she does not have the same curves to make up for any short-fall in the face department.

victorviper (7 meses atrás) #20710284I haven't actually seen Gantz:O (I didn't even know it was on Netflix), but the story arc it adapts happens pretty late in the series' timeline. It seems like it's *supposed* to stand alone, but I get the distinct impression it's kind of necessary to at least know the characters.

Oh! Because you explained in your review she was looking more after her CGI movie counterpart, I expected you to also have watched it. xD

I'm not sure if it's on worldwide Netflix, just that they recently added it to the Netflix of my country. And hrmm, there are a lot of other things I should watch, so I guess I will postphone watching Gantz:O then... ;)

I have been intrigued into trying out Gantz again. I recently saw the CGI movie was added to Netflix, would you recommend watching that one without knowing any background information from the other Gantz-media?

She is a very neat figure. I didn't really discover Gantz until just a few years ago, and by that time the very limited number of Gantz figures that had been made had gotten really scarce. Thus, if Union Creative made some more Gantz figures, I'd probably get them!

Hope your Reika finds its way to you soon :).
