! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Mewtwo ENTRY #6424 , originally from Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) ENTRY #241 , but with this specific figure being from Dairantou Smash Bros. for Wii U (Super Smash Bros. for Wii U) ENTRY #65846 ! This figure ITEM #300391 is from the Amiibo line ENTRY #66217 made by Nintendo ENTRY #10712 themselves. With Amiibo their average release price being around ¥1,200, they are regularly seen as simpler prize figures when it comes to price and quality. They are officially marketed as toys and in the US and EU available in toy stores, but a lot of adult collectors like them too.

Background

I'm pretty sure that on this website, I don't need to write an introduction to Pokémon, but it's interesting to point out that this specific Mewtwo version is his look modelled after his appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. For me my first game in that line was Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube and I was stoked when I unlocked Mewtwo there! The Super Smash Bros. franchise is a series of fighter-games that uses a lot of different characters from Nintendo IP's. It's a lot of fun and very different from other fighting games, so I definitely recommend you to try it out if you didn't do so yet!

Mewtwo is a very famous Pokémon. Well known as the first 'engineered' Pokémon, made by humans, originally made from the DNA of a legendary Pokémon called Mew. Mewtwo is a legendary Pokémon to catch in the first generation of the games, and had a very big role in the first Pokémon movie, that will probably still bring tears to the eyes of many adults. If you're not familiar with Mewtwo (or maybe even with Pokémon), I do recommend (whatever your age) to watch the original uncensored Japanese version of the first movie. The story is incredibly good for a 'children's anime' movie.

Mewtwo's gender: View spoilerHide spoilerI don't really want to open the can of worms when it comes to Mewtwo's gender, so I'll address it here. Mewtwo is officially genderless and referred to as 'it' in many media. I personally think 'it' sounds quite rude, but also think using 'they' is not very fitting. I have always used 'him' for Mewtwo, considering the very deep male voice they gave him in the movies in the dub of our language.

The reason why and how I got Mewtwo

Ever since the first movie, I became a huge fan of Mewtwo. I already saw Mewtwo before in the games, but the games did not provide much of his backstory. As a huge Mewtwo fan, I already started collecting a lot of items from a young age that had Mewtwo plastered on it. Stationaries, trading figures, plushies, you name what was available back then and I got it. I stopped collecting Mewtwo items when I went to college, and then got back on it starting with the release of ITEM #128905 a bit over 4 years ago. At the moment of writing, I'm currently busy with some other collections where my money goes into priority-wise, but Mewtwo items will always be one of my side-collections where I will occasionally buy some things for.

Regarding the Amiibo I will review here, when it was announced I wanted to get it asap. Back when Amiibo were pretty new, they were known for being sold out fast, high demand meant pre-orders couldn't be fulfilled by stores and scalpers were having a field day very fast after release. To be abolutely sure I would get Mewtwo without paying an outrageous price, I pre-ordered him at 2 different places...and it ended up being available for me at both. So now I had two Mewtwo Amiibo's. One I have opened and the other one sealed, I display them together. I don't think I will ever open my second one.

The figure is directly modelled after this promotional artwork from Mewtwo, that was from his announcement as a character to play in the Smash Bros. game. The figure exactly copies this artwork, with the main noticeable difference a lesser amount of shading on the figure itself, mainly visible on the chest.

For people that prefer the box shots, first look and first shots of the figure as a video, please take a look at the inserted video below. For the people interested in pictures: keep on scrolling!

Notes before I start this review

I own the EU version of this figure, which should be very similar to the US version, except for some notes on the boxes and the instruction papers. The JP version has quite a different box design. The figure itself should look the same in all versions.

As someone that doesn't own a WiiU or has this game for the 3DS, I can't make use of any of the digital functionalities of this figure. I will review this item only on how good it is as a figure.

The box is a nicely designed blister packaging. If you're very careful you can remove the figure with only making small cuts in the plastic part of this packaging. The look of the packaging is quite stylish and I like the purple color and use of the original artwork. In general I dislike blister packaging, because the cardboard back can get damaged easily and the plastic rips with a lot of them, but this is one of the better ones I've seen. Also, I really like how this is Amiibo no.51 while Mewtwo is Pokémon no.151.

First Look

The figure comes with a bit of English instructions.

It's very interesting to know that the Amiibo is hazardous waste what is even IN those chips?! and it's good to know that it can't be removed from the base. If you don't care about the functionality of the Amiibo, I guess you could clean it with water, but it's not recommended.

A part of the blister comes out of the box. It holds Mewtwo very well.

You can already see from these pictures that Mewtwo has some 'bad angles', especially when it comes to his face. When viewed from the correct angle, he is quite stunning!

Looking at all the details!

I was very happily surprised when I started looking at Mewtwo from up close the first time. The expression is spot-on and there are even small nostrils sculpted. His mouth is very small and subtle, which completely matches how Mewtwo is supposed to look.

His chest has quite an extensive sculpt and has more shading than I expected (although not as much as on the artwork).

When looking at the other side of his face, it's noticeable that his eyes are looking in other directions. This makes him look weirdly crosseyed from the front, but when looked at from both sides, he has two very different expressions.

In this shot you can also see some more which parts were made in a seperate sculpt and attached later. There are visible seamlines at the top of both his arms, his upper body and his tail. It looks a bit worse on the pictures than that it is noticeable in person.

Both of his hands are fine looking when it comes to posing, but seem to be a bit big compared to the original design.

Mewtwo's 'neck tube' is also a bit thick compared to the original design. Luckily it's not very noticeable when you display him from the front.

I like how the details of the 'back plates' look. The shading around his eye also comes out nicely here.

From the front you can see a two big seamlines, which are only visible from very up close. I feel like I am nitpicking a lot with this review, because I'm getting so up close with every part. But believe me, for a ~1200yen/$12/12 euros figure, this is all still very acceptable!

I always really liked the design of Mewtwo's legs and tail and I really like the posing of them here. You can see a bit of a knee shape in the sculpt, a detail that does not even show up in the original artwork!

The tail is really big and has nice movement to it. There is a seamline halfway through the tail, only visible from up close.

The base for all Amiibo in the Smash Bros. line is the same. You can see that the Super Smash Bros. logo seems to be added later, which is probably because of the chips that needed to be inserted for the functionality. The base has a see-through part that gives Mewtwo extra stability. Even though I think it's quite big, I think it's needed for this figure. Only one of Mewtwo's feet is actually on the base and even then still sticks out for quite a big part. I guess that's the downside of having a general base for all your figures in one line.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eNRU_1f4NKyb1JXWSyOfZ0_hFzN1CvfvYbPl4Naf-o5CQWJCsUydS4bGO9oo2OGUUNLAEXyNPKFbQLjRk8IB0jfH5hPx9l9Ge-zlPi1DMysGcW3woNgpxvJfzBmYrmimKRhpoK0vhEz5jo78qGX7K9N1O81ZxwT2TEAYGBdkVELUx07kQbxbwQeref9c-xwnoQQfFnu7kQroAJj3nvbHq5T3KCi9UW--cl7v5SMMW9ce7KAzGcAe9JWDizV3vA4o1iSFZRdDPkQzRY7fprKjslXZPh_ULBZ20Lu1JHbHE_u1ebXPzwCggSX1bWYwKbUO8UWKEF_7QXJhrNaG6mxmEOpqHrUdAlLFTKrTqOZA10soZ-NQcMQAqFbRsD2BhvdfYWZGc9hzXlzkh7-gvvrOdemU8-fjgInmpsWaqRIxMFiUyowAY4cDXYkVaVuUKTP87xjsSwiXe6BWH7O16ZZbXHo_E6r6T5v2H4UJXmwv8OBZ4GQ_9JSRUdjO24j_uJFbrog-ljVZbvaC3jJmBpR8pTW4EC1bPT_KCg9kjWMOFbR9M0DcTftpR7PiXzH3zaCeWUz0dyncCP4i-UL8z6LvYVuyanVOILAqeWkc_sjz8g=w1291-h968-no?.jpg

The bottom of the base shows some copyright markings and a serial number. I'm not sure if the serial number is something unique to be used in game, but just to be sure I censored it. Also notice how much of a dust-catcher the base is! This review was made directly after unsealing one of my Mewtwo's and the base already caught this much dust from the fabric it was sitting on! The base is also quite heavy, which I think is because of the electronics in it.

The Points

Positive
- Low price.
- Lots of shading and a nice sculpt.
- Barely any defects, only some small seamlines to be seen from up close.

Neutral
- Blister packaging, can only be opened by cutting it open.
- Generic base used for all figures in the same line.

Negative
- Has some really bad angles.
- Mewtwo is very cross-eyed when looked at from the front.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Although I may seem to nitpick a lot in this review, this figure's sculpt is actually very nice for it's price! A few parts seem a bit out of proportion (such as the neck tube and hands), but I'm also really impressed with parts such as the tail sculpt and the front and back plates.

Painting 8/10
There is quite a bit of shading on the upper body and Mewtwo's face. The other parts have no or barely any shading. I actually expected no shading at all on a figure this price, so it was a nice surprise. All other parts on Mewtwo are one solid color without any painting errors.

Posing 7/10
Quite a powerful and in-character pose, but it has some bad angles.

Base 6/10
Re-used base for all the figures in this set, which makes Mewtwo doesn't fit on it very well and a huge transparant block is needed to provide him support. There is a nice golden color and the base is heavy, so it is very sturdy.

Packaging 7/10
Nice color design and lay-out, but I personally really dislike blister packaging in general. You always have to damage the box a little bit and the cardboard backing is not very sturdy.

Enjoyment 9/10
This is a really nice Mewtwo figure and I'm happy to add him to my collection. My expectations of this one were not very high, but I was blown away at how almost flawless this cheap 'toy' figure was. Especially if I compare it to my purchase of the D-Arts Mewtwo ITEM #128905 , who was loaded with small paint errors. Which is pretty crazy considering I paid around 1/4 (or maybe even 1/5 of the price if I include shipping) of his price for this Amiibo!

Conclusion

If you are a fan of Mewtwo, this figure is a must-buy. He's cheap, easy to get and definitely worth the probably less than $15 you will spend on him. If you're not a Mewtwo fan, I don't think I will really recommend him. Even though the price is low, in the end it's still a 'toy' figure and doesn't stand up to the quality of a lot of other figures from Japan.

Availability

I jumped on buying this one, expecting it would also get scalped and very expensive on the aftermarket. I was wrong. You can easily find Mewtwo for still around the release price available in a lot of stores. I'm not sure if there have been multiple releases of this figure or they made a too high quantity of him.

And to finish it!

Here is my Mewtwo temporarily displayed with some other Pokémon figures:

My little cross-eyed Mewtwo, this is probably your worst angle. Lol.

See you at my next review!

Rajke (4 meses atrás) #30040011Really nice review, the Amiibo's are easy available figures.

An huge difference compared to a few years ago! But I am glad I got an easy chance to grab my Mewtwo because of this. :)

Rajke (4 meses atrás) #30040011I own one but haven't take it out of the blister. With the Amiibo's i want them in the blister because the package itself is also looking good. Mewtwo looks good and i never expected her to be cross eyed. Price technical: the Amiibo line-up is very good (with a few exceptions). The price is not high and the quality is good. The same base isn't disturbing because i think it is one of the characteristics of the Smash Bros. Amiibo line-up. For Mewtwo the base is maybe a little bit to small. They did indeed a good job with designing this figure. The small mouth, her hands, the tail and the coloring. It is close to how Mewtwo is supposed to be. And the most important thing: the expression of the face isn't zombie like. (This is best visable in the X and Y videogames. Refering to the cutscene where the eyes of Mewtwo are really looking empty)

I agree on their boxes looking nice, which is why I am also displaying my second one sealed. :) If you want to use their in-game functionality, I guess you have to unbox them, though!

The cross-eyed-ness is only bad when looked at directly from the front, which isn't his best angle anyway, even in the drawn art and stills from the anime... With the exception of the one in Origins: vignette.wikia....

I do like the coloring/shape of the base as it's super recognizable as the Smash Bros. icon, it's just unfortunate that Mewtwo doesn't fit on it at all... :(

And yeah I understand what you mean with XY Mewtwo... The design of the eyes make it look like they are eyes that can't look directly at you (if you know what I mean :P ).

Thanks for liking the review! :)
