! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

There are a few crotch/butt shots and a few shots of a bare stomach, they are still pretty tame, which is why they are not put in a spoiler. You are warned!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Red ENTRY #14796 with Pikachu ENTRY #4166 from the Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) ENTRY #241 franchise! This figure ITEM #331724 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Pokémon does not need an introduction on this website, but it's interesting to point out that this figure is from the character Red (not Ash/Satoshi), that is in the original Pokémon Game Boy games. Considering this Red figure comes with a Pikachu it would suggest that this figure is based off the specific game Pokémon Yellow, although this is not officially confirmed by Kotobukiya. Red is also seen in the recent Pocket Monsters: The Origin ENTRY #55240 adaption, which I really recommend people that are fan of the earlier games to watch!

The reason why and how I got him

As a huge Pokémon fan from the beginning, I have a lot of fond memories both of Satoshi/Ash from the anime, but also from Red of the Game Boy games. Satoshi/Ash figures before the release of this figure were pretty lacking, so when this figure was announced I jumped on pre-ordering it! After the announcement of this figure, more Satoshi/Ash figures were announced, but I really don't regret this purchase as this is my favorite of them now.

Original art

The original artwork this figure was made after, is from artist Ariga Hitoshi ENTRY #99294 and drawn in a very similar design to Sugimori Ken's ENTRY #62990 style (Sugimori Ken was the first character and Pokémon designer and has provided the artwork for the covers and booklets of the first Pokémon games).

The posing of both Red and Pikachu is directly modelled after this artwork. I appreciate with this figure that they kept to a very similar color palette and the style of the eyes is the same. Even though it's a very new figure, it gives off a nostalgic vibe.

This figure has a really well-designed box, I love it!. It's not too big or too small and the color-palette is just like the old games. There are cut-out windows with Poké Ball shapes. One of the sides shows the artwork this figure was based on. Also notice the ShoPro authenticity sticker on the front. There is a bootleg out there of this figure and I'll give it a high chance that the sticker is either missing or printed on the box of that one.

The figures come in a box where they snugly fit in. There is a cut-out so you can get a better look at Red his face and main focus point of this pose: His pointing finger.

Red has a very determined and stern looking expression. I really like the design of his eyes and they are nicely put on decals here. His hair looks quite fluffy for how spikey the design is!

His hair has a lot of small spikes, which looks especially good from the side. His ear and the back of his hat have a lot more details in the sculpt than I had expected! The hat has quite a bit of shading and a neatly applied decal at the front.

There some small letdowns in paint and sculpt at the jacket, such as some leftover PVC at the collar and a bit of white paint on parts that should have been red.

I like the attention to detail that went into the zipper sculpt and paint of the jacket. Also take notice of the wrinkles in the shirt, they move very nicely.

The huge movement in the jacket, gives you a big look at the clothes underneath. I'm not sure if this was ever confirmed canon, but Red's shirt is sleeveless.

The white inside of the jacket also has a big bunch of shading. Interesting is that my copy has a weird spot of paint on the side, which looks like the same mistake as on the outside white pocket.

Red's left hand is sculpted very initricately around the visor. Fingernails are individually sculpted and have a bit of gloss on them.

Jokes aside, I really like this part of the figure. It gives a lot of extra power to the pose, without it being hugely fanservice-like that it would be offending to the franchise.

Here we can also get a good look at Red's belt. The details in the sculpt are nice, the paint is not perfect especially around the top, but good enough for the price this figure was released for (which was ¥8500, a very low price compared to most other scaled figures released during the same time).

Red's pants are slightly baggy and their sculpt looks really good. There is minimal shading at the right spots and there are seams from the pants sculpted.

For the people hoping to see some butt, well, his butt is quite flat. There is some nice shading on the pants here and a lot of detail put into the back pockets.

Red's shoe design is very simple and Kotobukiya stuck to keeping it simple. There are again some small letdowns in paint, but nothing grave.

The base is a big Poké Ball with a really nice metallic effect. The base is also kept quite small, which is a plus!

Looking at all the details! - Pikachu

We shouldn't forget the Pikachu figure Red comes with! It's small, but very good looking!

Pikachu has a nice amount of shading on his body, but what stands out the most is his very neat posing! For the design, this Pikachu seems to be an mix of the original and newer designs. Where the old Pikachu is known as 'fat Pikachu' and the newer one as 'skinny Pikachu'. This one hits a good middle ground to please the fans of both designs.

The only downside on Pikachu is this really weird seamline on the bottom. It could be two reasons why it's like this: They either made a seamline like this, so the rest of this small figure could be seamline-free and/or there was an idea to add an magnet or other nifty thing (such as light up functionality?) to Pikachu, which they ended up not doing. Anyhow, this part is luckily well-hidden when Pikachu is normally displayed.

This small Pikachu really looks the best from the front. The really determined face and nice spark-effects at his cheeks are amazing! This is probably my favorite Pikachu figure now!

Display options with Pikachhu

As Pikachu is a loose figure, you can place him wherever you want when displaying with Red.

Pikachu can also be easily balanced on other parts of Red, but I wouldn't recommend doing this for longer periods of time. I think it can give paint transfers.

The Points

Positive
- Detailed figure of a simple looking design.
- Really nice box design.
- Good piece for fans of the first Pokémon game(s).

Neutral
- Some small letdowns in paint and sculpt.

Negative
- Pikachu's weird belly.

The Scores

Sculpting 9/10
There were a lot more details sculpted on this figure than I had expected. For a figure with such a simple design, the amount of details is very high!

Painting 8/10
When you look from really up close there are some letdowns here and there, but overall the paint is very nice, especially the shading applied.

Posing 9/10
Very in-character and powerful pose. The movement of the clothes, especially the shirt, adds a lot to a pose that could have been a bit static otherwise.

Base 8/10
Nice color design and very small.

Packaging 9/10
Great box design, I love it! It reminds me of the old games, without looking outdated.

Enjoyment 10/10
I just...wow. I absolutely love this figure. I bought this figure on a nostalgia whim and had a bit of buyers remorse a few days after paying for him. What if this figure was a big bummer because it could ride on nostalgia? But no! Kotobukiya delivered an amazing piece for this price and I'm happy to have Red as this figure for my Pokémon collection!

Conclusion

Fans of the character Red and/or the first game(s), really should get this figure. It's the best representation out there from him and I'm not sure if there is another manufacturer that is going to dare and also make a high quality scaled of Red specifically. If you're not into Pokémon, but just like cute boys or this character design in general, I think this is also a good figure (to possbly display without Pikachu) if you can get him for a good price.

Availability

Speaking about good prices, it seems like the value of this figure has shot up in the last year since it's release, wow! With a release price of ¥8,500 (around ~$80/80 euros), you now see him for prices ranging from 15K-23K yen. Some users on here are selling him for a bit less (if they're still available): classified.php?... . As this is such a good figure, he is also worth paying over ¥8,500 for, but how much higher you want to go after that, will probably depend on how deep your nostalgia is...

And to finish it!

Currently I have this figure temporarily displayed with some other Pokémon figures. Soon I put my more extensive Pokémon collection on display!

CaptainZ (3 meses atrás) #30500023Man, I missed the boat on this one.
Like you, I have been a fan since the beginning and I should have known considering how autistic the fandom can be I should have PO'd this bad boi.
Please, Koto do a re-release. May is a whole other sore spot.

I expected his price to rise a bit, but I did not expect the huge prices I saw when I was researching them for this review. There is barely any talk anymore about this figure, so I'm not sure Koto will consider a re-release. I think it's best to keep your eyes peeled and see if someone ends up selling theirs for a lower price than the average market value. Still, if you want him really badly, the 2 users selling him now are asking lower prices than the Japanese stores!

Rajke (3 meses atrás) #30566954This figure does give that nostalgic vibe. The art style sure has changed over the years. The paint fails are acceptable but like you explained the belly of Pikachu is a mess. I like the way how Pikachu is sculped. A fat Pikachu wouldn't look great.
The pose of Red is spot on. Like his character in the games. He don't have to say anything, with his pose he already challenged you to a battle. For this figure i had hoped that Kotobukya would use a white snow/mount base. Red may be the protagonist of the first games. Red's waiting (in this outfit and not frozen) on mount Silver in the Gold and Silver generation is what gives this figure the nostalgic feeling.

I really adore the older style, I'm sometimes a bit sad how the games look a lot like the anime now, but the artstyle probably wouldn't fly anymore if it was still used now. Fat Pikachu has a special place in my heart, but probably wouldn't have worked for this figure. I think this mixed Pikachu is a good one, as I'm also not a huge fan of the super skinny Pikachu.

Ahhhh, that would have been so nice too! I agree with you there! Maybe they could do that if Koto still plans an re-issue. ;) But I think over here they wanted to show Red as the Pokémon Yellow protagonist, where maybe even more people are nostalgic for?

victorviper (3 meses atrás) #30470438I've never played any of the Pokemon games, so my Poke-knowledge is limited to watching the occasional episode of the TV show, so I was kind of surprised how radically different the artstyle of this figure is compared to the TV character designs! The design is...I don't know...harder, maybe?

Yeah, I know what you mean. The game designs are very different, maybe you can call them a bit more tough? I absolutely love looking at the older game artwork, makes me feel nostalgic. :)

The coloring is also very neat!
