Entry 1: A Fledgling Photographer & His Nends

TheTravelingSeeTheTravelingSee13 dias atrásDiary
A little over a year ago I ran into a picture of the Umaru-chan nendoroid diorama that kixkillradio had uploaded somewhere online.

https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5785/30944299516_f0c49da892_b.jpg

Prior to this moment I'd never really thought much of nendoroids. In fact, I found their bulbous and disproportionate bodies rather unappealing. But after I laid eyes on the work of kixkillradio, among others, I simply had to recreate the fanciful and child-like wonder for myself... or at least, that was the plan.

My friend, who was wasn't into nendoroid collecting at the time either, had notified me that he'd spotted an Umaru nendoroid at a store near Anime Jungle for only $45! (Mind you, Umaru hadn't been announced for re-release at this time and was selling for around $80). I immediately asked for him to take a look and buy it for me should he find that the item was indeed a real nendoroid.

I provided him with the "How to spot a bootleg nendoroid" YouTube videos and some cash and he headed off. Suffice to say, he returned with a bootleg Umaru much to our dismay (I still have her though).

This prompted me to forgo all reason or care and purchase an $80 Umaru off of Amazon that very same day. It arrived the next morning.

It was with my first exposure to this one nendoroid that the wonder and awe came in bountiful droves. I hadn't been encapsulated by a toy for years, but here I was, a university student, fawning over a little thing such as her. I wouldn't call it love, but it was damn close.

This alone wasn't what propelled my needless indulgence of nendoroid spending however. This event simply sparked the fire that would continue my obsession until my writing of this article.

What really did me in was the fact that I had written a report on the Hatsune Miku nendoroid and its inherent power in swaying the economic purchasing of indulgent consumers. That report was published in a small undergraduate journal run by my professor. And although he frequently noted that people tended to hold an ironic resentment toward the topic that they chose to write about for their report, my interest and love for nendoroids simply grew with my research into their design.

All of this is mostly me rambling and has no real bearing on the actual photography aspect of my entry title. But I do hold the origins of my collecting dear. For from there, I began to use my prior interest in photography, and my new interest in nendoroids to recreate some of the magic that kixkillradio and others were able to give to me.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/TheTravelingSee1501521504.jpeg

I started small. And by small I mean I recreated the diorama that kixkillradio had made to the best of my ability. All the credit goes to her creativity. But it was here that I began to explore my boundaries. I didn't understand an aperture or an f-stop or what the hell an ISO was, but I persevered and eventually came out with some half decent material that I worked into Photoshop. But that, in and of itself, was another struggle. As you may have noticed with my first Umaru picture, I was not well versed in lighting of any kind! Hopefully, I have since gotten better.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/TheTravelingSee1514944232.jpeg

In many ways I'm still in that rudimentary stage. And so, despite how corny it may sound, my journey started. I knew nothing of Photoshop or real photography. I still don't in my opinion, but I will continue with this craft so long as there are those who enjoy my creations. It's not like I'm the best photographer. Far from it in fact. I will likely never be the best photographer on MFC nor have the most medals and badges. But at least I could share a little of my love for collecting and nendoroids with everyone else.

So with that, my newest picture is here!
Ren-chon Marches On!

TheTravelingSee (11 dias atrás) #30895186What an awesome choice! I should probably expand my male selection of nends as well since I only have a Marth nend from Fire Emblem XD But this little guy has that iconic naked pose. I hope you love him! :)

Hahaa...yeah the little nude, cover my junk pose cracks me up.... :D

On a side note...almost ALL my figures of all types are male, so I need to expand my out to some ladies, but most everything I really want is guys...so that's what I typically end up with...

Stacycmc (11 dias atrás) #30895063Alright, just wanted to share that one of the little Nendo's from my wishlist popped up for sale for a great price so I pulled the trigger....
Let's hope this doesn't lead me down an irreversible path here... LOL.

TheTravelingSee (12 dias atrás) #30893894Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read it! Your support means a lot to me :)
It's so great to hear you say that it was inspirational! If I can get even one more person into the hobby then that would be a victory in my book :)
I know exactly how you feel! I had it kind of easy since my father was always big on photography anyway though. All I had to focus on were the nends and learning the craft! If you have any questions about shooting then let me know. Maybe I could help XDD
Thanks again! But it want all just me. I had a lot of help from a lot of people. YouTube helps a lot with tutorials as well XDD I wish you the best on your own photography!
P.S. I know that your picture is the cover photo for the English nendoroid page. It's an awesome picture! :) You'll be creating even more cute creations in no time :D

Thanks so much for the kind words! I was really happy to have my picture become the banner for the month haha! ^_^

I'm going to start watching move videos for tips and really trying to do some research on it. So much to learn, but as you've proven, it's far from impossible!

DidiMew (12 dias atrás) #30893836As a full-time, completely obsessed Nendoroid fan, I fully support your love for them! LOL. I collect pretty much exclusively Nendoroids myself, so I'm probably a bit biased.
But on a more serious note, your story is really inspirational. This year I want to focus a lot on improving my own photography. I feel my pictures are totally average if anything, and this year I want to change that. I love taking photos and setting up the scenes, I think I just struggle having somewhere nice to take pictures, and something nice to take them with! That's definitely a new years resolution of mine; Spend less on Nendos to save for a decent camera, ahh~ >.<

DidiMew (12 dias atrás) #30893836 But seeing you say you started from pretty much no experience to producing such lovely shots really inspires me to keep trying. I don't know what all the camera terms mean like ISO, and I don't know how best to do lighting right now and everything else that goes into photography! But it's worth working on. So thank you again! I hope at the end of 2018 I can look back and, like you, feel that I've improved. ^_^
I love your latest shot, congratulations on getting POTD. Hope to see more from you soon!

Thank you for giving your time to providing your insight! It means a lot believe me :)

Hahaa....well you're very welcome! Your similar stance initially made me chuckle (and rang very familiar to me, LOL), so wanted to share my thoughts on these little guys as well! :D

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455
But yes, in regards to the nendoroids themselves, being cute and overly fawned over is exactly what they're designed to do! And from a business perspective, it's most certainly worked.

LOL...yes from a Marketing / business strategy, the idea is genious! No telling how much they make off these little guys, selling these things for $40-$60...is nuts, but they sell like hot cakes, so why would you NOT??!!!

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455And yes! I'm actually a really big fan to KOKO as well! There are so many photographers who've inspired me on this site and others, but if I were to go on and on about every single one, the post would be too long! XDD I thought it best to just focus on the individual who got me into collecting in the first place.
As for Apology, I've just become familiar with his work. But I agree with you. There is something so captivating about the simplicity and warmth of his photography. I'll definitely be following his progress as well now!

God, yeah there are tons of great photographers on this site....way to many to give shouts out too...agreed! :D These two just stood out to me from a Nendo standpoint, as back when my hate was really strong with these little guys, their pics actually made me want to get one..., which for me early on, was impressive...LOL, as I REALLY disliked these little guys a lot at first.

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455And I encourage you to try a nend out. I understand that they're not for everyone, but then again, I wasn't a proponent of them in the beginning either! Just don't go crazy like I did!

Yeah, like I said I actually added a few to my wish list, just so that if a good deals pop up I can try a couple out. I found 2 for sale that I'd definitely pull the trigger on, but the person who put the ad up is totally unresponsive (but still shows they've logged into the site). Not sure if that means they no longer are selling but left the ads up, don't want to sell to me, are not getting PM's anymore (although I don't get the message that their box is full), or what....but guess I'll keep waiting for another deal I feel I absolutely must act on to pop up. :D

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455 But thank you for the kind words once again! My friend and I (the one who bought the bootleg Umaru) have a running joke that collecting figures, and by extension nendoroids, are like a plague. And it just sucks out all of your money! But seeing as how I indulge myself and spread the plague, I suppose that that means I'm a flea or rat huh? X)

LOL...collecting is definitely addicting, and fortunately I haven't fallen in the Nendo trap yet, as there are sooooo many of those and different accessories, etc... It definitely seems like it can be a much bigger black hole to fall into versus just collecting figures in general. :D

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455
Edit: I hopped by your profile and realized that I am familiar with your work as well! I've unknowingly been following your photography for months. It's a wonder to me how you don't have more followers. Your images are stunning and, with my limited Photoshop knowledge, I can only imagine the work and effort!

Hahaaa...aaah, well thank you so much...very nice of you. I am very flattered. I am not that great though, but just enjoy the hell out of it! Definitely not a professional by any means...but taking the pics then doing the editing is a major stress reliever for me, just relaxing and enjoyable... I love being able to create different scenes using my favorite figs!!

I don't even know how to tell if I have a follower on here...maybe that means I don't have any! LOL...I don't mind though, the best part to me is the creation part. If someone else enjoys it after I post it, that's just an added bonus...as if others can enjoy something that I enjoyed thoroughly that is definitely a second win and makes me happy! I'm flattered anyone likes my creative aberrations, LOL....it's easy to go astray on these...put too much thought into it, overwork it, underwork it, etc... Glad you enjoy them though!!! :D

TheTravelingSee (13 dias atrás) #30893455P.S. Where did you get some of those overlays? They look amazing!

By overlays do you mean the backdrops in some of the scenes? If so, a couple of them are my own (either pics I already had or were created in photoshop), some are a blend of various pics and some manual additions, but most of the elaborate scenes are just screen savers I've saved off the web and edited to work with my figure! Some I already had, some I found specifically to use in a pic I wanted to do. :D

Thanks again for your kind words...and I'll be on the lookout for more pics from you! :D
