! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Kaiba Seto ENTRY #4011 from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ENTRY #22169 ! This figure ITEM #91371 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga series created by Kazuki Takahashi. It tells the story of the young boy Yuugi Mutou who lives together with his grandfather that owns a game shop. From a young age Yuugi has always been playing games by himself, since he gets bullied a lot at school. One day he solves an puzzle that turns out to be an ancient artifact from Egypt! The artifact, called the Sennnen (Millenium) Puzzle, gives him a wish. Yuugi being a lonely boy, wishes that he would get friends. The artifact makes his wish come true, but in exchange a spirit can take over his body whenever he wants! This spirit is called "the other Yuugi" or "the dark side of Yuugi" and is the complete opposite from the Yuugi that has solved the puzzle. The other Yuugi loves to play Shadow Games, which makes the losing player in the game lose something that is very important to them... Later on in the series, Yuugi gets on better terms with the spirit inside him and they can talk together or change the host of the body at will.

The original series (manga 1-7 and the first televion anime) is about a lot of different games, mainly played as "Shadow Games" by "the other Yuugi". The second adaption of the series (manga volume 8 and further and the anime called Duel Monsters) almost completely focusses on an extended version of the cardgame that gets introduced in the beginning of the series.

Seto is the main rival of our main character. Being the owner of Kaiba Corporation, the company making the Duel Disks used by the characters in this series for having virtual reality battles, he hosts many events related to the card game. He is most well known for owning all four three Blues Eyes White Dragon Cards. Seto has a very cold personality and most of his talking is very snarky. He does have a soft spot for his little brother Mokuba. Seto's main goal in the series is to beat Yami Yuugi.

The reason why and how I got him

I have been a huge Yu-Gi-Oh!-fan from the first moment I saw Duel Monsters dubbed on local television. After only airing 2 seasons they stopped showing it here, making me interested in more! During that time I already started watching anime in Japanese, so I decided to also watch Duel Monsters in Japanese. Later on, I found out about the original series before Duel Monsters and watched that also, and I ended up really liking the originality in all the Shadow Games that were made. During my teens I collected quite some "toys" that were sold locally from Yu-Gi-Oh. When they announced the trading figures and the first scaleds in the One Coin Grande and ARTFX J line from Kotobukiya in 2011, I was so amazed and happy! I never expected a series I loved to get figures after the airing stopped 6-7 years ago! As excited as I was I decided for myself to pre-order all the items they were making from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. This one has been on display in my collection for almost 6 years now.

The figure was advertised with the following artwork from Kotobukiya. The final figure turned out to not have this posing at all, but his exclusive version that was release a little less than a year later was indeed posed ITEM #133845 after this artwork. If you're interested about a review of that version of this figure, user SOLLUXCAPTOR made a review BLOG #35221 about it!

I couldn't find a 100% matching artwork for the posing we see in this figure, but Kaiba poses in a lot of similar ways in the anime.

Bright, colorful and with big windows, I like the touch of the Blue Eyes wing on the side! Seto's box is incredibly big, because it has to fit his big coat. The figure itself turned out to be a lot bigger than I initally expected!

The blimp is quite small, but nicely detailed. It has everything on it you see on the blimp in the manga and anime.

Even the small windows at the bottom are individually painted! Also the bottom shows the copyright marking, a bit intrusive maybe, but wel hidden when this keychain is displayed hanging/standing and looked at from the front.

His big and shiny coat definitely grabs a lot of your attention! As with this display option, it's the same as with my earlier reviewed Bakura ITEM #119376 / BLOG #40178 , the posing of this figure does not make much sense without duel disk (even if you were to display him without holding cards like done so here). So to me at least, this display option doesn't add much to the figure.

Seto's regular arm is a bit of a bad fit, leaving a gap. The silver paint on his bracelet is very nice though.

Now we're talking! Seto definitely looks a lot more badass when you have him with the duel disk and cards!

Looking at all the details!

Seto's expression at the mouth is very nice with his small smirk and those glaring eyes that have shading like he hasn't slept for a while, really add a lot to the overall look of his face.

Especially when looked at from above that 'tired eyes glare' looks even more intimidating! Like Seto has been waiting for a long time to finally do this duel!

Seto's hair design is quite 'tame' for a Yu-Gi-Oh! character, so I'm glad to see Kotobukiya still added quite some detail to it. There are many strands sculpted and quite some shading to be seen. The middle of the hair has quite a big seamline, but it's acceptable for the age/price of this figure.

Considering most of the time the back of his hair is blocked by the type of clothes he wears, it's nice that you can see his quite long hair on this figure!

Continuing down we can see Seto wear his trading card keychain. Just like in the manga and anime, the card on the keychain is a lot smaller than the size of an actual trading card (to dismay of many Yu-Gi-Oh! fans), Kotobukiya decided to do the same for the figure. The ring attached to the card is sculpted and painted a bit crude, luckily the card itself and chain look a lot better.

Seto's coat has silver studs on a lot of parts, which are painted neatly. Also notice the KC logo on his belt.

With my copy of this figure, Seto's right hand has some leftover PVC and seamlines.

Just like with all the others of this set, the front of the cards does not have any artwork. Something that still bothers me to this day, but was more acceptable with an older release like Seto.

The bracelets and belts Seto wears around his right arm are nicely painted and shaded. Also notice some shading on his right hand.

There are some tiny defects on the belts on his left arm, but not too worrisome.

When we get to his Duel Disk however, we do see some worrisome things. The Duel Disk itself looks OK with shading, but has a bit more messy paint at the top.

The messiest part is the Life Point indicator. This part is a very sticky decal. Shortly after displaying, the sticky black parts 'spread', here you can see a picture of when I had Seto for a few months, showing an earlier stage of this problem: PICTURE #545906 . There are also multiple pictures online of other owners of this figure having similar problems with specifically the LP Indicator: PICTURE #1849206 . With how sticky this part is, I'm afraid of cleaning it with water, as I think it would remove the whole decal, the numbers are already barely readable now.

Seto's left hand also has some shading. The way the Duel Disk is attached to the bracelet also looks nice.

I personally always really liked the 'hip points' his coat has. Really adds to the over the top late 90's clothes design.

His back is nicely detailed as you can see his shoulderblades coming through from the back. The wrinkles up to his waist and bottom of the coat also look amazing! Only downside here is the bit intrusive seamline inbetween upper and lower body. I am expecting it to be impossible to have had this huge coat as one sculpted piece production-wise.

The inside of his coat has a lot of shading in many shades of purple. It's very nice! There is one weird spot in the middle, though. It seems like it's a seamline leftover from the production of this figure, but it also looks like how in a lot of other Kotobukiya figures magnets are hidden. There is no magnet function with this figure, though.

This is also the closest shot I can make of his butt, so enjoy! He has quite a flat butt, but it's a bit more round than on most other Yu-Gi-Oh! characters their figures.

The front part of his pants shows a lot of wrinkles around his crotch-area, but there is not really any fanservice for the people that hoped to see that here. My copy of this figure also has some glue-stains at the top, seems like it's from attaching the top half of the figure to the bottom half.

His pants barely have any shading, but there is some nice detail with the sculpt around his knees.

It is always debated if Seto's shoes are connected to his pants, or that they are in a similar (or the same) color and the top of the belt indicates where the shoes end. Anyhow, his shoes here seem to have been shaded a bit darker, especially at the foot. The painting on his buckles and the belt itself is a bit so-so here. The shoe itself looks a lot better.

Seto's base is sculpted pretty nicely and there is a bit of shading in the base. With newer releases in this line, the base has a lot more shading.

The Points

Positive
- Incredible representation of this character. Must-get if you are a fan of Seto!
- Lovely glossy paint and great sculpt on the coat.

Neutral
- Minor painting errors.
- No details on the front of the cards. No matter the age of the figure in this line, I won't forgive Kotobukiya for this!

Negative
- Horrible smudgy decal on the duel disk that became worse with age.
- Some glue leftovers.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Especially the sculpt in the coat is amazing and the sculpt in general is very true to the character!

Painting 7/10
The gloss of the coat is amazing, but some small paint errors (and a strange smudgy decal!) take the score down a bit.

Posing 8/10
Very in-character and a bit intimidating. Looks especially good when displayed to another 'dueling pose' character in this set!

Base 8/10
Good detailing and shading. Is not too big, but still holds this huge and heavy figure well.

Packaging 8/10
Had to be big because of the size of this figure. The packaging is very colorful and fits the Yu-Gi-Oh! style.

Bonus - Kaiba Corporation Blimp Keychain 8/10
It's a very nice bonus item with high details! I would personally put the value of this item loose at around ¥1K. So if you can get a first release Seto figure for ¥1K more than a later release, it's definitely worth it for this nice keychain!

Enjoyment 9/10
I think this is an amazing representation of this character and still love to display him after all these years.

Conclusion

If you are a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! and/or Seto Kaiba, this is a must-get. If you're into bishonen or over-the-top 90's clothing styles on your figures, this one could also be an interesting purchase for you.

Availability

Shortly after his release, his price highly increased on the aftermarket. Kotobukiya did three re-releases of this figure, of which the last one in late 2016 and they kept on selling fast. Nowadays you can expect to pay around ¥12-16K (around double of his release price) for a re-release without Blimp keychain. I do have to add that is mainly 'popularity tax' as Seto has a loooot of fangirls!

And to finish it!

I have Seto temporarily displayed with Jounouchi.

And when I unpack my Yami Yuugi ITEM #91000 soon, they will be standing across from eachother while Jounouchi cheers them on in the backgroud. I will maybe also add some of my monster figures from NECA browse.v4.php?c... to this display.

This is maybe also a nice point to show off my partially unpacked collection in my new figure room.

As you have probably noticed, Seto's huge size pushed the limits of my small light box and backdrop, so I'm happy to announce that I just bought a bigger and more professional one, which you will see in future reviews!

Thank you for reading this review!

solluxcaptor (5 meses atrás) #36020351MY BEAUTIFUL HUSBAND... Even though I own this figure I'm fangirling a bit over your photos lol he just looks so beautiful close up.
And thank you for mentioning my review!! ;-;
I actually never managed to look under his coat before so those shots were... interesting, I'm glad you included them ahaha cough. I was surprised to see flaws like the lifepoint counter and glue on your copy though. But he still looks amazing at least!
The flaws I found on mine were a few paint chips (despite being sealed) and the arm is VERY stiffly stuck down so I haven't managed to replace with the Duel Disk yet, I found this to be a common issue in copies of these figures that havent been opened though, I guess due to age.
solluxcaptor (5 meses atrás) #36020560Since you brought attention to my article I realised all of the image links were broken ;; I've fixed it now and thanks for mentioning it regardless!

Haha no problem! And I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! I will start uploading them in full resolution shortly after I finish writing this reply to you~

It's pretty hard to look under his coat and if my camera's lens would have only be a tiny bit bigger it wouldn't have fit to make a picture in that angle, lol!

About the LP-counter, considering you said you bought him new/sealed, I wouldn't be surprised if after a while of displaying you get the same/similar defects. D: Mine also got worse over time. I sincerely hope not, though! But you are warned now...

With my copy, his arm without duel disk can easily be removed, but it doesn't completely fit inside the arm slot, so there are some issues there, yeah...

victorviper (5 meses atrás) #36015061And another Yu-Gi-Oh! review is complete :).
I always like reading reviews of figures that I've never really looked at, since I can look at the figure and commentary totally objectively, and I found myself agreeing with a lot of your points, like the fact that the alternate arm without the Duel Disk is quite unnecessary. I also agree that this figure does give off a very 90's vibe with all the sharp angles in the design of his outfit.
It's too bad the life meter seems to be a source of problems with this figure, but it wasn't too clear to me what's causing the "spread" of the black stuff. Is it ink from the decal that's somehow bleeding into the surrounding paint?
As far as the blankness of the cards, have you ever entertained the idea of scanning some of his cards, and making some little mini-decals with which to customize them?

It sure is! Maybe at some points I will have reviewed them all? Haha! I'm not specifically planning on doing so, but even with the high popularity of YGO, there do not seem to be a lot of reviews of these figures out there! So I'll probably do even more of them in the future.

I actually don't really understand why an alternative arm is included here. With some of the figures in this line it makes sense, Jounouchi for example, can have a 'thumbs up' pose with it. But when they don't change the way the hands are posed, it's just confusing why they even offer such an alternative. If Kaiba's hand would have a fist or be posed more casually, it would have been 10x better.

The spread of the black stuff is the black color of the decal becoming 'gooey' and bleeding onto the rest. It's a really strange thing, I've never had any other figures with this kind of decal bleeding.

I have thought about that! But I am too scared to make changes to the actual cards on these figures and it would be very precise work as some cards are also overlapping with the way they are being held in the hand. So I think I would rather try some simple sculpt/cast of the cards myself and then apply mini decal (or just handpaint colors the cards have, no artwork) instead. :) It's on a backlogged list of things I want to do for my figures, haha!
