Fate/Apocrypha - Astolfo - 1/7 - "Kuro" no Rider (Kotobukiya)Fate/Apocrypha - Astolfo - 1/7 - "Kuro" no Rider (Kotobukiya)

Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review! :3

This post will be picture-heavy (you don't say....)

Today I want to take a look at Kotobukiya's „Kuro“ no Rider (aka Astolfo) in his adorable casual attire from Fate/Apocrypha. Now I do love Astolfo ever since watching Fate/Apocrypha (the anime itself unfortunately was quite lacklustre, at least in my eyes) and seeing how I actually paid the aftermarket price for ITEM #464693 not getting this version wasn't really an option for me. I'm really glad Koto didn't pull some exclusive face (or other parts) bs for this figure, since it was more on the expensive side (at least for Koto's figures) from the get-go (I also don't want to proxy stuff if I don't have to).
Anyway, without further ado let's dive right in.

As usual we'll be looking at the box first. The box is made up of rather 'normal' (the flimsier) cardboard and has a big window in the front and additional ones on the top and at the back. The back one seems like an odd choice as it's a weird angle to look at at best and the railing taped to the back of the blister doesn't do anything to improve that. The box itself has a somewhat striped and faded ochre background with ornaments decorating it and black parts with the 'title' and origin of the figure written on it. Right and left (as well as the back) feature pictures of the figure from different angles, while the bottom part shows the usual gibberish (like safety instructions, product code etc.).
Overall the design is pretty simple, yet it fits the figure nicely.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023178.jpeg
The blister isn't really unusual either, but it shows a lot of excess space basically everywhere and looks a tad to big (just like the box once you've seen it). I guess this offers good protection, but usually Koto's boxes are a bit more compact and less oversized than that.

Fresh out of the box there are just 2 parts to the figure: the figure itself and the railing.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023179.jpeg

Astolfo comes pre-attached to the base (which is true for quite a lot of Koto's figures as well) and attaching the railing looks fairly easy (there's no instruction sheet either), though in reality it's a bit tricky. Determining which peg goes into which hole is simple, but getting them in requires some force, but also care so as not to break anything. Even after using force to the point that the railing just won't go farther in it still remains wobbly (not in a worrying way, but touching it will have some effect at least).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023180.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023181.jpeg
Even with this the base looks really good, a bit of sloping cobbled walkway with the nice looking somewhat antique~ish railing. The clear plastic wedge holding Astolfo in place doesn't exactly fit or look good with this though... it's sturdy even with just one leg being attached, but I'd have loved a 'prettier'/less conspicuous solution.

Now for the 'grand' overview...
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023182.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023185.jpeg
This figure has a very cute and energetic vibe to it, due to the dynamic pose and is overall pretty adorable. It also makes Astolfo look quite feminine, which can no doubt be attributed to the outfit.

'Cute' is also the perfect word to describe Astolfo's face, with the big eyes and his fang. Looking at it from the front makes his nose seem a bit 'undefined', but a more sidewards look will prove that wrong and also show how his mouth and fang are sculpted.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023186.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023187.jpeg

I have a love-hate-thingie going on with his hair. I love how it's sculpted, slightly moving and with all the different strands. Especially nice is the way his hair goes into the ribbons. The same can be said about his braid, which apart from that might seem a bit lacking in terms of details, but I'd still say that it's sufficient. The ribbons themselves look quite decent too, with just the right amount of details.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023193.jpeg
Unfortunately though you can also find a lot of QC-issues here. There's lots of bits of excess plastic, which can be seen fairly easy too (due to the light colouring). At least the seam line between different hair segments look clean. But with the sheer amount of errors (there're actually way more than I marked), this makes for quite a substantial complaint. Additionally the hair shows really little in the way of shading, the sort of lifelike impression is only created through the sculpting.

Going further down the first thing we can see is a really nicely modelled collarbone followed by a set of billowing clothes and a necklace that could've used a bit more care in terms of details and painting. The same can be said for the shirt and jacket too though. While the overall impression is rather nice once you look closer at the details... the stripes aren't cleanly painted, neither are the black rims at his jacket and again there are bits of excess plastic all over.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023194.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023195.jpeg
It isn't all bad though, as I said the way the clothes 'move' looks pretty damn nice, with the creases being a real highlight. Details like the pocket, its button and the pompoms are also lovely additions. The shading, especially on the hood is fairly decent as well, with the rabbit ears adding an extra level of cuteness (you can even move the little black rings around).

His hands show a nice amount of detail too, particularly the subtly glossy painted fingernails.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023196.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023197.jpeg
The fingers being a bit short and almost 'plump' looks rather childlike though.

Even with Astolfo wearing a skirt his stomach-area doesn't look to feminine though (the promo-pictures indicated that his hips would be wider), which is a plus (not what you'd call 'too manly' either though, which fits his character). Just like the rest of his clothes the pleated skirt is caught in a billowing movement, complementing the dynamic impression. It can even be moved upwards a bit (talk about an unnecessary feature).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023200.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023201.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023202.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023203.jpeg
One downside I see here is the lacklustre paint-job on the belt, especially the transition between belt and buckle. And again there're bits of excess plastic on both the belt and skirt, though at least the ones on the skirt are barely visible.

Now for the, kind of, obligatory NSFW-pictures....
View spoilerHide spoilerWhile I don't particularly care about accuracy in that department, I can't help but notice this figure's lack of nipples.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023204.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023207.jpeg
And the 'bulge' or lack thereof is still matter of debate... A friend actually asked me if this was the 'girl version' after seeing the picture, while others argue that there is indeed something. I'd tend to agree with my friend, or maybe those are just some damn compressing tights.
At least his butt looks somewhat cute.

The tights (or maybe leggings, seeing how they're not 'see-through') look pretty good, slightly shiny and with wrinkles in the right places, suggesting a thicker but still flexible fabric.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023209.jpeg
The way the legs are aligned implies Astolfo happily running/jumping around and adds a fun component to the cute vibe and the sense of motion.

His shoes fit the rest of the outfit, but the details aren't as 'sharp' as I would've like (especially the shoe laces and the tongue). But they added a nice little detail with giving the soles a tread.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023210.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023211.jpeg

Last but not least some size-comparisons...
Astolfo is a 1/7 scale and measures up to 25cm, without the base it's roughly 23,5cm (though it should still be a bit less, considering his bent sole). According to the FGO wiki his 'real' height is 164cm, so 23,5cm is quite accurate.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023212.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023213.jpeg
Seeing him next to 1/8 scales it's obvious that he dwarves them, partly because of the base giving the figure extra height, but his face's size and body volume don't fit with 1/8 either.

Now posing him next to ITEM #464693 you actually get the same result, though the Amakuni figure is supposedly 1/7. But even without the base, the body size/volume as well as the face just don't fit all that well... It's not as bad as with the 1/8 figures, though you obviously don't really get your money's worth from Amakuni (it's visible in numbers too, since that one is only 21cm without his base).
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023214.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023215.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/07/22/2023216.jpeg
Other 'normal' 1/7 figures like Scáthach fare way better and Nero (which is probably closer to 1/6) actually manages to 'outsize' him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conclusion
This figure is a bit hard for me to rate. The QC-issues just due to their sheer number are quite bad imo (guess there's a downside to sticking to your release-schedule too), but I don't think they make this a bad figure. There are quite a few positive aspects as well and most of all the figure is just cute as heck. I guess there's always the possibility that I got a 'bad one', but I don't really believe that.
So if this is indeed the 'normal' quality I can't unconditionally recommend him. If you're a fan and/or not that nitpicky go for it, but if you really care for these things maybe you want to pass.
That's it for this review! Thanks for reading! ^^
As you should know by now,
I always appreciate constructive criticism so don't be shy. :3
But I'll reserve myself a right to have a different opinion on some things.
Of course any thoughts on the figure are very welcome too!^^
Thanks for the link of your review, I didn't knew this figure, he is really cute I love the context the base and his pose, and sure I'm pretty shook by all these "imperfections" on his hair? Maybe I never notice this kind of thing but since you showed them in the pictue precisely i'm quite surprised by how many they are, I do like the colours of the figure, something bother me a bit it's like he doesn't have a nose, but everything is pretty outside of that.
I'll forever complain about that unless companies fix that habit! x3
The flaws aren't all that unusual for Koto figures, maybe the number is a bit higher than usual, but this is basically what'll you'll find on all of their figures to some extent (as far as I can tell). However, they're mostly in usually invisible places or you only see them up close.
Yeah, the face isn't 100% perfect either, other than that he looks great though and considering that they paid attention to the setting and chose a lively pose I'm more than willing to forgive a few oopsies. :3
Maakie (1 ano atrás) #39281625A bit late, but adding to the bulge/no bulge discussion: I own a Koto figure with a visible bulge, although tiny: PICTURE #1972301
So with Altolfo I'm rather afraid that they wanted to keep it minimum, to also let this figure appeal to the general Japanese male fans of this franchise. :c
Anyhow, nice review! :)
Thank you, glad you liked it! :3
Well, the difference is that there is something, while I can't really say the same for Astolfo.
I do get why they did it that way, but it makes me wonder if that could/has backfire(d), since that is part of the appeal of the character, no?
As I said I personally don't really mind either way, I mean I almost always include pics like that in my reviews, but I don't really care what is (or isn't) under the skirts of my figures (unless it's an NSFW one). Not that some kind of disappointment from other fans isn't understandable to some degree (at the end of the day, this isn't really accurate).
killindarlings (1 ano atrás) #37725238snipThat's probably true and it's not like any reasoning will change what we got in the end, though it'll stay as a sort of bummer (a small one for me, but others will rate this differently I'm sure).
I'm fine with just having a cute butt and an overall cute figure of him. At the end of the day I wouldn't see either his bulge (if there was one) or the butt most of the time, since my display isn't that high up.^^
tharglet (1 ano atrás) #37786298snip
That might be true as well and some time in the future I might even do that (thank you for the suggestion), but while 'ill-fitting' (pretty strong word, since I've seen stuff a lot worse than this) parts still a bummer and deserve criticism imo.^^
That fence doesn't look like it is all the way in still - would likely be less wobbly if the post is properly in the recess. I'd suggest heating the base to get the pegs all the way in. Heating can be done with warm water or a hairdryer, depending on preference.
(If the fence is being an arse to get out again, you can heat where the pegs are, but you may want to wait for the pegs to cool before trying to shove. Would think this figure would be ok if both are warmish, but sometimes warm pegs + warm hole = no).
I think a lot of the disappointment in the bulge debate comes from the fact that there aren't really a lot of trap figures out there, and this feels like a little bit of censorship. Calling it a 'tuck-job' feels like an excuse, and calling whatever that is a "bulge" sounds like some classic buyer denial.
Don't get me wrong, it might not have been an intentional decision by Kotobukiya. They probably didn't even considered adding a little something down there, or maybe they did and it was too late into development.
All I know is this..........
That butt is pretty cute aw hell I might get this figure anyways shoot
Well, can't co anything against moe points, right? x3
I only discovered the pierced rabbit ears by accident, but it's definitely a nice feature (I wish that much care would've went into the whole figure). Well, can't co anything against moe points? x3 The color-scheme is something I love as well, but the part about not having a trap figure in your collection sounds like that was a goal of sorts.
Yeah, it's obvious he's not a girl in a subtle way, but the lack of a bulge (even with that sort of leggings and 'packing' there should be something) undermines that a bit imo. As I said though, I personally only care about that in terms of accuracy if anything and it's not something I desperately 'need' to have (it's not a NSFW-figure either). But even with Koto being not that accurate in that department as a 'general rule' I wonder why they made a teasing promo picture like this one static.myfigure....
Jisung (1 ano atrás) #37716685Just imagine how he'd feel if he had to take a leak then... it hurts thinking about it lolIn discussions like this I'm glad I'm actually lacking the parts to 'imagine' that. x3
Voronarara (1 ano atrás) #37717242snipI do wonder if Astolfo is actually the type of character to care enough about these things to actually do that. I mean it's still the best explanation we'll ever get, as you said... just wondering.^^"
Yeah, it does hurt but it's a pretty common thing for drag queens and other cross dressers to do so that's why it would make sense to me. But who knows, maybe they just thought the fans would like him better without a buldge and left it out without any real reasoning for where his dick went, not like we'll get a statement on that XD. I just thought that tucking would explain the absence of a buldge.
Voronarara (1 ano atrás) #37712392Nice review. It's such a beautiful figure!
For the buldge mystery imo Astolfo could be tucking(as in taping his dick and balls back between his ass cheeks so everything looks flatter and smoother down there).
Just imagine how he'd feel if he had to take a leak then... it hurts thinking about it lol
