Hey, fellow mfc-members and welcome
to another review!

Warning: This post will be picture-heavy (surprise surprise) :3

Today I will take a closer look at ITEM #604470 FREEing’s version of Nanachi & Mitty from Made in Abyss. I’ll try my best to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible, though I can’t guarantee complete “safety”. Anyway, at first, I picked up Made in Abyss because there was quite a bit of buzz surrounding the, but the first half felt kinda meh~ to me. Ofc, the world-building is fantastic, but the rest (especially the characters) didn’t really click with me for some reason. However, slightly before and definitely after Nanachi got introduced as a character this changed completely. I do adore her and that’s why her background felt really heartbreaking (which is true for a lot of fans). This is what the figure reminds me of and maybe that’s exactly why I had to get this figure. Some might think this is masochistic and that might be true as well (there were quite a few comments of users saying they wouldn’t be able to take it), but for me it’s a real achievement whenever a story can move me like that.

Ok, I didn’t want to bore you with my rambling, so I’ll just proceed as usual and start off with a look at the box. FREEing went with a simple yet pretty and fitting design. The base color is an earthy shade of brown adorned with flowers on the sides. The top features a green silhouette of the figure, also decorated with the flower pattern while a patterned trim complements the top. The bottom shows the usual warnings and manufacturer information. One thing I really like about the box, apart from the really thoughtful design, is that I opens more like a box of expensive sweets. This makes sense, since the figure shows a lying position a regular box (possibly with windows) would look odd.

The blister comes on two layers, the first holding the figure parts and the second holding the base.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Removing everything from the box we get 4 parts: Nanachi, Mitty, the plush and the base.

Attaching everything at first seems a bit tricky so an instruction sheet is also included, though once you find the right bents at least Nanachi an Mitty are a pretty tight fit.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now for the base… I’ll put this plainly, I hate this thing ever since it was included in the promo pictures. It’s huge with a diameter of 20cm and the “grass” is too bright to look natural and the fur makes it look even cheaper. Ok, I’m not a fan of fur bases in general, so there might be a little bias involved here, but if they wanted to make it like this at all costs couldn’t the green have looked more like actual grass? Not that this deterred me from getting the figure, because luckily, it’s not actually needed.

Also, as you will see below, the brown plastic borders don’t make the thing look any better.

Anyway, here’s the full overview…

One thing I do love about this figure is that while it tugs at my heartstrings, it also gives off such a peaceful vibe.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
This impression largely stems from Nanachi’s content sleeping face, apart from just being cute it’s also very soothing (at least to me), though you’ll definitely have to display her above eye-level if you want to see it. The way she cuddles with Mitty is just adorable too.

Actually sculpting Nanchi’s mouth and adding structure to the whiskers is a nice addition and gives her face more depth.

For the most part her hair is pretty well-sculpted, and I like the subtle shading and the color gradient from her hair to the ears. Yet there is a quite visible seam between the ears and I’m also not all that impressed with the ear’s sculpting. The inside looks very good (and fluffy) but the outside unfortunately isn’t as detailed.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The same can be said for most of her body, where I’d have preferred a bit more structure to make it look more like fur (shading alone just wouldn’t cut it). Apart from that the sculpt looks okay, especially her paws and the furrier line on her back. Though there are some smaller paint errors here and there.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014424.jpeg
I like how you can see the inside of Nanachi’s trousers and how her torso ends in them, though the excess plastic on the inner rim could’ve been smoothed out.

The trousers themselves are nicely detailed, the dark seam and the pink bags in particular. Unfortunately, the pink paint from the left bags bleeds into the red part of the trousers, but otherwise paint and sculpt look really good.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014439.jpeg
Nanachi’s tail and hind paws(?) look good, though I’d still have wished for a bit more in terms of detail. Another thing that actually bothers me a bit is the big seam between the top and lower parts of the trousers, they tried to hide it as a fold, but it’s still a tad bit too prominent.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Now let’s take a closer look at Mitty. This is really hard to rate in any particular way. Mitty looks, well… like Mitty and yet somehow complements the peaceful vibe in a way I can’t really describe.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1536451394.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014443.jpeg
I do like some details like the ears, the color gradient as well as the glossy painted mouth and eyes, but you can clearly see that her design wasn’t well thought out and executed. For one there are visible gaps where Nanachi and Mitty don’t perfectly fit together which is a shame, though the real problem is the kind of clusterfuck of seam lines and parts. Yes, her body is pretty deformed, but this assembly looks sloppy to the point I can’t really justify is anymore.

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
The plush is probably the only thing I can’t complain about since the paint and rough seams make it look pretty life-like.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014475.jpeg

~◦*◦✾◦˚°˖*゚✲*❁*✲゚*˖°˚◦✾◦*◦~
Since a 1/8 scale is given for this figure, but considering Nanachi isn’t human I almost wanted to scratch the size comparisons, though my best friend talked me out of it saying she wanted to see how she looks next to other figures. Due to space-issues (I’ll get my second Billy soon!) I currently have them displayed next to my Odin Sphere figures, which are all 1/8 scale imo nothing looks out of place here.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014482.jpeg

She looks more natural next to figures like Kogitsune however, who is a 1/7 scale.
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/broken-Toybox1537014490.jpeg

As you can see FREEings Nanachi is quite a bit bigger than ITEM #604500 in terms of body volume, though ofc she is still lying down and thus won't reach the same height.

Conclusion
Well, this is a tough one. I like this figure for the emotional attachment I have to it, but I feel like for the price and her small size the quality should be better. There are quite a few complaints and some of them wouldn’t have been necessary if they had planned her out better. To some degree it feels like a rushed product intending to cash in on the hype. My overall verdict is still good, since the expression and feel of it is quite well captured, but I feel like my bias is rather strong.

That's it for this review! Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it! ^^
Well, I can't help it if you didn't after all unless you give constructive criticism.
Speaking of criticism, I'd be really happy about that. :3
Ofc, as usual, any thoughts on the figures are very welcome too! ^^

I couldn't buy this figure because everytime I see them I will want to cry ;-;

You're welcome. :3
I do get that feel, it's a pretty emotional piece after all, it's just the impact that probably feels different for everyone.

I love Made in Abyss, I looove Mitty and Nanachi, but I did not preorder this figure because I hate the base xD Maybe I will buy it when its cheaper or secondhand.

Thanks! :3
I love them too, but I should've waited to with this figure, I had vague misgivings during the po-period but brushed them aside and now I'm kinda not satisfied. Seeing my history with figures I reviewed I'll porbably sell her at some point emotional attachment or not. :/

hadalisii (29 dias atrás) #40264439I was looking forward to reading a review of this figure! Thank you :) As someone who looked at all Nanachi figures and choose Kotobukiyas cheerful version in the end, somehow this review puts me at ease...
i think the base really kills this figure as a product. they couldve done so much better with a nice and detailed base (or even a more realistic green fur), which is sad, because for some people this figure is the embodiment of the realtionship between nanachi and mitty (which I agree!). but yeah, im glad you are honest in your review ~ (after all its still a nice figure, just not one for me!) :)

You're welcome, glad I could be of help. :3
I think you made the right choice by going with Koto's version, not only because I myself usually prefer cheerful figures (I want my favorite characters to be happy!), but also in terms of quality (sounds like you got a 1 figure per character rule). I'm quite eager to see ITEM #675995 painted at this point, though I really fear the price-tag.
I know what you mean and this may sound really mean, but that base is utter garbage. I mean why not do something like Kogitsune's base? That would've looked miles better (though I'm not a fan of the white frame).

Well, it is what it is though, there are options for customization and it's not like that's the only thing I feel kind of let down with this figure. No use in sugar-coating that either (I'm not a sales rep or anything). :3

Heldrik (29 dias atrás) #40264262Another interesting review that was pleasant to read.
I didn't know fur bases were a thing; you learn something new everyday. The one you review kinda reminds me of Warhammer Fantasy Battle's (RIP) custom ones, with the base in itself as soil/ground and some grass toppings. At least on this one, it must be sweet and smooth when you touch it.
As for the characters, poor Mitty looks weird from the bottom, like she's been cut clean and immediately reattached. At least it looks good with Nanachi. And seeing the two of them like this only reinforces my impression that their relation after their transformations strongly reminded me of Martin and the dog in The Fly 2.

Thank you! :3
Well, fur bases from my experience are usually more of a NSFW-figure thing, which I think is more fitting. I don't know about the Warhammer one's do you have a link or something?
It is kinda soft, but also feels more artificial, I'd actually compare it to the feel of knitting polyacrylic (that's a bit of peculiar comparison, but for me it comes closest). The fur base of ITEM #464672 feels way better in comparison, I wonder if that's related to the fur being dyed or not.
She sure does and that comparison is pretty on-point tbh (you really have a way with words). Ofc you usually don't see that angle, but you can guess what it looks like just from looking at her normally. Well, her and Nanachi together do indeed look good, they do a good job of hiding each others not so perfect spots.
I actually didn't see the movie (not really into horror), but now it actually picked my interest, thanks. ^^
