Of Frames and Magnetic BoardsOf Frames and Magnetic Boards

Buying merchandise is just half of the business, what's equally important is how you display them.

I started off collecting chibi keychains from gachapon machines, then rubberstraps and acrylics came hand-in-hand. I used to display them on a corkboard --

Sorry, corkboards. They're overcrowded, yes, but its pretty organized all things considered. I got to see them out in the open and that was great! Love showing everyone all my beautiful children but the upkeep was a hassle. Being out in the open left them prone to gathering dust and monthly clean-ups get tiresome especially when the stuff tend to fall off and give you mini heart attacks when you brush them clean. You'll notice that a special few kept their plastic covers because they're just. that. precious. Still, the corkboard did its job and I was happy to keep growing my collection.

We all know the rule: if it's not broken, don't fix it.

So what broke it? Hypnosis Mic.

I fell hard from the get-go and soon as the franchise got traction there was no stopping it. Who the eff drops 12 nendo announcements in a single WonFes smh. There was no way to contain the influx of merchandise on my already crowded corkboards and the monthly clean-up got tiring so I tried something new -- frames. The logic being it's easier to wipe glass than dust off each individual item.

I started framing them last August and it definitely solved the dust problem but the frames were kinda small. I can only fit so much in a single display :C It works for small-scale collections -- DMMD, Kekkai Sensen, ACTORS -- but the big ones? My Kuroko no Basukes and Haikyuus? The HETALIA?? It hurts to have them physically separated.

Eventually, I found bigger frames to hold them in.

It looks much better! I even have a separate one that's just SamaIchi. It's chaotic compared to the 'set' frame on the left but that's part of the messy messy OTP love that they have uwu

I also got my hands on can badges, which, I never really appreciated before but with all the Hypmic collabs that happened, we don't always get the acrylics that we want. Mostly because they're tiny and I appreciate the art a lot more on bigger renders so can badges it is!

Now listen, I KNOW that the one on the left looks better, classier. That's the original set up when I thought the cafe collabs would finally stop but they didn't. Hypmic put their 2nd Live goods on PO and the badges were 75mm vs the rubberstraps at 65mm. The badges won and I had to find a better, more organic way of storing them.

The black background on the left photo is foam board; had to cut out holes for the badges. It turned out swell but if I had to do that for every badge release it's gonna be a headache especially since the sizes tend to vary per manufacturer. So I got a magnetic white board and some neodymium magnets and stuck them on there... The white bg bothers me tho, the badges don't stand out very well on that. I'm thinking of just getting a piece of black board paper to cover it up, surely the magnets will still stick.

My acrylic standees used to live in the frames but now they're cohabiting with my figurines in the glass shelf. I LOVED the Cafe Honpo ones because BIG BOIS but then Sweets Paradise one-uped that with the second round of their Hypmic collaboration. I'm still waiting for the Kotobukiya es fest acrylic standees from my proxy, so we'll see how I fit them into this display when they come~ Edit: The Koto standees came yesterday lmao got them when I came home ^^

Ijou!

The black backgrounds make the pieces pop! Corkboards are fine, but it feels like you took display to a higher level with those boxes.

Tokiha (27 dias atrás) #55191450Omg Love this. I've been avoiding buying any HypMic goods cause I'd get sucked in but it's getting harder to do ;w;
Also, not sure where you live, but I like to wait for sales from Michaela for their shadow box frames. It ends up being like $5 - $7 each frame and you can get them in varied colors :D

aww man i don't think we have that store in the philippines :C
thanks for the tip tho! and yes, be very very careful about falling into the Hypmic trap, they're not just taking our money, they're taking our impulse-control, too :)))

Shelia (27 dias atrás) #55117925This resonates with me so much!! I also used corkboards but yeah the upkeep is a hassle. These look great - are they shadow boxes? Would love to get them in white!

Oh, yeah, I guess shadow box is the right term! I just keep calling them frames because that's what they were shelved with at the bookstore :P The smaller ones had hinges which made it easier to secure everything

But the big ones are just regular deep frames with these metal tabs at the back

http://www.framers-corner.com/files/shop/products/rw/77-3_750.jpg

which made it a hassle to secure once all the stuff is pinned on. There is a tutorial to fix that, but I haven't gotten around to it yet eheh ^^

I also used foam board for the 'base' where I had to pin the keychains, since they only came provided with like cardboard or something. Foam boards come in white, too, but I find that black makes the designs stand out more.

accidias (27 dias atrás) #55142205Using a magnetic board is really smart! Do the magnets stick to the back of the badges without fuss, or does it need extra adhesive?

The neodymium magnets I got from a local dollar store are medium-sized like this
https://5.imimg.com/data5/YA/BL/MY-3185019/neodymium-magnet-500x500.jpg

Didn't have to use extra adhesive since the back of the pins are metal and I could 'flip' the safety pin attached to make space for the magnet.

Just had a slight problem with badges that had this kind of backing though, since the pins are 'more secured' and protrude a little:

Had to slip the magnets under the pin to get them to stick :) I do think having smaller-sized magnets would lessen the hassle.
