Review: Hachikuji Mayoi - Repaint Edition (Koto)Review: Hachikuji Mayoi - Repaint Edition (Koto)Review

Hello everyone! I'm back from my two week trip to DC, and it was definitely a mixed experience ... I'm considering making a personal blog post about the trip but unsure as of yet, because it would probably just be me blabbing about the city and my crazy program lol!

Anyhow, I was really anticipating my January figure arriving ... and it happened to arrive today -- KotoUS's Hachikuji (ITEM #180851)! Full disclosure, there are several ways to spell her name. On the KotoUS website, it's spelled "Hatikuji", whereas on MFC it's spelled "Hachikuji". For the sake of this article, I will be referring to her as her MFC entry name.

Now, without further adue, on to the review! (੭•̀ω•́)੭̸*✩⁺˚

Monogatari was a really fun show to watch. As I've spoken about previously, Sengoku Nadeko (BLOG #44393) is my favorite girl out of the group ... followed by Hanekawa (with braids and glasses!), and third in line is Hachikuji. I absolutely think she's just a sweetheart, super funny, and I love her tongue twisting lines. Her signature catchphrase "Kamimashita!" has a very nice and touching result.

I first saw this figure when I was purchasing my other Koto Monogatari figure (BLOG #44012) and since I really loved Hachikuji, I wanted her ... and so I got her! I'm glad I got her recolor because I prefer it.

If you're interested in seeing the kind of packaging KotoUS provides, please check below this spoiler!

The box is pretty standard that they send it in.

The packaging on the inside is pretty minimal. There's no bubble wrap. Instead, there's a bit of paper at the bottom to protect the box and a soft foam-ish wrapping.

The box is covered in tissue paper. KotoUS always does a nice job of this, but I don't think it really protects anything!

Hachikuji's box is pretty eye popping. I like the large, askew window on the front -- it definitely goes hand in hand with the character's personality. The box itself is a pretty heavy cardboard, which is cool. I like the box art and color, but what I'm missing is any original art of my girl Hachi. The small windows are a nice addition but don't lend any view in to the figure. Check under the cut for some more pictures of the box.

The blister isn't over the top but it isn't skimpy either ... well, in my opinion, it's a little skimpy.

Note how there is a twist tie behind her. This is my first figure that has included a twist tie, so make sure you check! I was trying to pull apart the plastic that protects her but couldn't due to the twist tie. Glad I didn't damage her in some way.

So this part is void of photographs because, for some reason, MFC will NOT allow me to upload this one picture I took of the base. -`д´- Anyhow -- the base is made up of two pieces. One is a round clear disk, and the other is a "shadow" of a snail that Hachi comes out of. In order to put Hachi together, you have to just place the snail on the base, line it up, and then place Hachi's plastic foot peg through both pieces. It's interesting that this is how they chose to design the base, but more on that later.

Here is my sweet little Hachi, in all of her glory! Pictures of her in 360 under the cut. Please excuse my finger in the corner of one of them, lol!

In this photograph, you can see the base. Hachi is connected with a large plastic peg. I'm a little bit worried about leaning, to be honest, because she's so askew and I don't know if this base is really going to hold.

Hachi has a lot of cute details. I love the little four leaf clovers on her shoes, making each step lucky! Her socks are decently shaded, and she has minimal detailing around her ankles.

The back of her upright foot has a nice detailing on the bottom of her shoe -- it mimics her box design. Mine looks like it has a little bit of paint flaw towards the heel, which is a bit of a bummer.

Hachi has slender "girlish" legs (no duh, she's like 12). I like her posing on the legs, and I like her bandaid on her knee.

Hachi's pose is in a twisting motion as if she's heard her name and she's turning to listen. Her skirt helps give this illusion, and it's nicely twisting in all of the right places.

In my opinion, Hachi needs to be displayed slightly above eye level ... but that also puts her at risk for flashing everyone watching. Check it out under the cut.

I feel like her bloomers are the most detailed thing in this entire figure, lol.

Hachi's backpack is super cute -- I am about to have a bunch of pink backpack girls on my shelf ... my mom immediately asked "what's in there?" where I answered "stuffed animals ... and stuff!". Who knows what's really in there?

I like the attention to detail on the tag.

Hachi's backpack is oversized and it's a wonder that she's able to carry it all with her! I will say that I feel like the sculpting here is pretty minimal.

I also really like her elbow. Is that a weird thing to say? Well, it's true! I like the shape of it and feel like it's bent at the right angle.

I like Hachi's sleeves from the outside of them. I am not really such a huge fan of her bracelet, when the light catches it it looks lazily sculpted.

Hachi is just so cute ... this figure definitely needs to be displayed at least a little bit above eye level, as much like Sengoku she's looking down on you. I like how her pigtails are really in motion and how they aren't too full but they aren't too thin either.

Hachi's little smirk is super cute! I also love the scalloping on her collar. I have quite a bit of paint bleed on her ribbon.

Hachi's eyebrows are a little thin and she has no blush on her face. I guess this is true to character, but it leaves her looking a little washed out.

It's hard to tell here, but the head seam is non existent. Not really sure what's going on with the white headband, and to be honest I have a scuff on the top of my had which is really annoying me.

Speaking of her hair, look at how funny this little piece of hair looks sticking out! I was taking this picture to show what the head seam looked like, but now I can't stop giggling about this piece of hair sticking up.

For this review, it's hard not to compare Hachi to the two other Monogatari girls that I own, so here they are!

Hachi and Shinobu (ITEM #166882) might not necessarily be BFFs on the show as they both are lolis who compete for Araragi's affection (wait -- who isn't?), but they look super cute standing next to each other. Both girls, being from the same show and same manufacturer, have a ton in common. Not only do they each have a leaning pose and bracelets on their wrists, but they also have...

...interesting "shadow" bases...

And ruffling skirts which leave very little to the imagination. View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/01/30/2376175.jpeg

Sengoku (ITEM #117956) is from Alter rather than Koto, but the girls still look cute next to each other. They have a few less similarities but both have that same kind of blush coloring overall.

Well, I can't believe it happened, guys ... I actually don't really know if I love this figure. (╥_╥)

First off, this BASE! I thought I would love it, but it just is such a dust trap. Within .2 seconds it was covered in dust. I'm not sure what the heck is going on, but it's almost as if it's magnetic to dust. Because it's raised, the dust gets trapped underneath.

I'm also really worried about leaning issues. With Shinobu, they drilled her into her shadow base, and I was kind of hoping that Hachikuji would be drilled in with the same support as Shinobu.

Regarding the figure quality ... I know it's Koto, so it's "cheaper", but I'm really surprised about a bunch of little flaws, especially since it's a new figure. The figure itself came out kind of dirty, which I've been cleaning as I go. I am sure you guys were able to see in a few pics, it looked like she was covered in dust and dirt marks. Well ... I had literally taken her out of the package and taken photographs, so I don't know what was up with that.

For example, she had some kind of dirty mud on her backpack. View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/01/30/2376186.jpeg. I also had this issue in some other areas, like her hair and her skirt. I also have a weird nick on the top of her head which almost looks like it had been touched with sandpaper or something.

Paint wise, I find her pretty washed out. I'm a little bit bummed about it.

All in all, I'm a little mixed on this figure. I'm still glad I got it because I love the character, but I feel like it could be so much better! I love the posing and I love her cute little smirk, but she doesn't really pop on my shelf.

Fun little bonus, my dad found these little cases and I planned on putting Hachi in here along with the other two. Excuse the glare, but it's just so fun!

Aimathyst6 meses atrás#74974423I adore your little display cases for them, so precious!

Thank you! My dad had the idea and got me three of them, which worked out perfectly. I'll take a picture of my overall setup once I'm done rearranging it. I think Shinobu looks the best in the little case, especially with how I have her shelf.

(And for anyone wondering, they're from ikea!)

Thanks for the review! It's not bad looking imo but it must feel pretty sucky if it came with that much flaws :{

I think she'll look better once I've done a thorough cleaning of her. I've been cleaning her as I go and as I see marks, but it's really weird since I preordered her from the manufacturer, so I didn't expect her to be like this. Also, even though I've been displaying her currently in a closed area, I've noticed her base still attracts dust. It literally is like a dust magnet lol! Don't really know what to do about the top of her head, but I guess nothing.

I'm also going to experiment displaying her in different places, because I think lighting/background color will help make her pop even though she's a little washed out.
