Let's see. Some of my favorite things are baseball, anime figures, 18+ figures (the company Skytube in particular), and the work of the artist Mataro. So when a figure was released that checked all those boxes, I had no choice but to pick it up, right? So today, we'll be reviewing Skytube's "Yakyuu Musume" (Baseball Girl). This is an 18+ figure, so many of the shots below will be NSFW...
About the character/figure: This character is an original character who was designed by the well-known illustrator Mataro ENTRY #78327, whose work has spawned all kinds of figures in the last year or so. This particular character was featured in Mataro's Sex Symbols doujinshi ITEM #911068 which was released in early 2018. This figure was released in December 2019 at a suggested price of 16800 yen. AmiAmi also offered an exclusive release of this figure that was bundled with an acrylic plate ITEM #828847.
Skytube often packages their 18+ figures in a book-style box with a flap covering the front window, but they go with a more traditional package with this figure. The bold white and orange color scheme really stands out.
I really like the source artwork!
As is common for Skytube, one panel features a silhouette of the character.
The back panel teases her alternate faceplate and one of her castoff features.
As usual, Skytube includes a postcard with the source artwork. An instruction sheet explaining the various castoff features is also explained.
The box is heavy but not large in volume. The box measures 35 x 22 x 16 cm and the package weighs just under 800 grams.
As you can see, the figure attaches to the base via two large metal pegs. She is very secure once attached to the base.
Presumably the finish of the base is supposed to simulate dirt. I don't think it's 100% realistic (IMO it looks like quartz), but the effect is good enough. Textured surfaces can be tough to depict realistically, after all.
The baseball is pre-attached to the base, and I like the stitching on there. Also, note how the ball appears to be game-used (there are some dirt marks on it). That's a really nice small detail!
The figure's pose attempts to duplicate one of Mataro's illustrations of the character into 3D. Let's have a look at her.
I could not really find an angle where there wasn't something interesting to see, so I would say that Skytube did just fine with the pose of this figure.
As with most recent Skytube releases, I would classify the overall paint and sculpt of this figure as very good. The paint work and the design of the paint scheme is very good, but there are a few sculpting quirks, most of which revolve around the various swappable parts of the figure. More on that shortly.
One of my favorite things about this figure is the sculpt of baseball-san's face. Her amber eyes are very pretty and I like the blue/green highlights in her eyes. She comes with an optional face plate, but I prefer this one with the eye black. The eye black and her messy hair give her a very tomboyish look, while the side ponytail adds a little bit of a girlish feel to her overall look.
I like all of the texture in her hair. Also note the shading on the bat. The lighter color on the "sweet spot" of the bat makes it look like it's seen some use.
The detail on her mini-backpack is generally good as is the sculpt of the zipper, but looking at this photo closely, you can see some silver paint from the zipper make its way onto the bag.
I like the little charms on the end of the bat, in particular the hamburger one, as those add to her girlish feel. The string attaching the charms is made of fabric and not plastic, alleviating some breakage fears. Note that spot on her sleeve with some stray paint from somewhere.
I cannot lie - the short shorts + thong combination is one of my favorite things about this figure! I also like the sculpt of her thighs, and the way you can see both the shorts and the thong grabbing into her flesh suggests a tight fit.
The tattered shirt suggests it was a very hard-fought baseball game :). The exact positioning of the shirt has a little play to it, and you can see that one of her nipples wants to poke out of the shirt. Her breast size is faithful to the source illustration, and their size falls into that big-but-not-gigantic range.
Most of the sculpting issues with this figure center around her shorts. The lacings on the shorts are probably thicker than they really should be, and you can see some painting flaws where the orange lacing meets the white body of the shorts. Also, it looks like the thong panties were carved out of her torso, and you can see some excess material from her body where her flesh and the thong meet.
The cameltoe effect is hard to miss.
Baseball-san comes with an optional lower torso, and to swap in the alternate torso, her legs can be removed, and the torso separates at the bottom of her shirt. The separation points aren't terribly obvious, but you can see little gaps if you know what you're looking for.
Comparing the source illustration to the figure, you can see some differences. As we mentioned a minute ago, the lacings on the shorts are somewhat thicker than they appear in the illustration. Also, the illustration gives her skin a shiny/sweaty look and makes her shorts slightly translucent. I'm fine with Skytube deviating from the source here, as shiny skin can be a tricky effect, and trying for the translucent effect on the shorts might make them look too plasticky.
We'll see in a second that if you are so inclined, the shorts can be removed allowing her to be displayed with just the thong. The shorts separate along that vertical seam.
I like the ribs on her socks, and the bright orange color of the socks is definitely one of the most eye-catching features of the figure.
I like me some nice calves, and her calves are well sculpted.
The design of her shoes is very distinctive. The thick tongues and the black and white color scheme really stand out. Note that parts of her shoes have a shiny black finish, while other parts are more of a matte black.
I like when figures (particularly 18+ figures) have many different display options, and baseball girl has plenty.
She can be displayed either with or without her visor. Placing/removing the visor simply requires that her side ponytail be removed.
She looks fine without the visor, but I prefer the way she looks with the visor, as the bright orange color really adds some pop to the figure.
She has two possible tops to wear, or (most of) her shirt can be removed altogether. Having the top separate there near her thumb is a clever solution.
There are small notches in the bottom portion of her shirt that keep its front in place.
This is also a clever solution, as even with that piece of the shirt removed, you will not be able to see those notches, and so she looks great with that piece of her shirt removed entirely. Note that her nipples are very large and detailed.
Skytube also includes a second, slightly skimpier top part.
Her standard top keeps her (mostly) covered up, but the optional top part makes it look like she's stripping out of her tattered shirt.
If you'd like to display her without the shorts, they split apart along that vertical seam.
I like how her thong panties are a slightly redder shade of orange than her visor and her socks.
Note the high level of detail on her inner thigh.
I prefer the way she looks with the short shorts layered over the thong, but if you like butts, this display option would be just fine!
Wow. That is a pretty ass-tacular sight!
She also comes with an alternate lower torso where she is completely bare down there.
Her butt is very perky and looks very firm, adding to her overall fit, trim, and athletic look.
Her vagina is also very detailed.
Finally, Skytube also includes a second faceplate. Note how the two faceplates are identical with the exception of the eye black.
She looks fine with the optional faceplate, but as I mentioned earlier, I like the default option with the eye black, since that adds to her tomboyish look.
All told, baseball girl has a total of 48 distinct display options:
2 faceplates x
3 top options (two shirt pieces or none) x
2 visor options x
4 lower torso options (shorts over thong, thong with no shorts, bare lower torso, or shorts over the bare torso is also possible if that's what you want to do)
You could choose a different display option for this figure every single day for over a month and a half! You need something to do while cooped up at home, right?
Baseball-san stands about 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) tall. 1/6 scale would make her 5'3" (160 cm) which seems completely consistent with her appearance.
This didn't really hit me until I started scanning my shelves for some figures with which to do comparison shots, but baseball girl has some features that are not totally unlike the iconic Haruhi Suzumiya, like her hair color and eye color, although Haruhi is nowhere near as busty as this character. The well-known baseball episode of the Haruhi Suzumiya anime is another tangential connection between the two characters. Max Factory's Haruhi ITEM #3 is 1/8 scale.
These two pair nicely with one another :). Orchid Seed's cheerleader Sonico ITEM #78702 is listed as 1/6 scale, but in reality she is quite gigantic - much more like 1/5 in reality.
Is there a better combination than a lively baseball game and a beer? A-Plus' Super Pochaco ITEM #197427 is a large 1/6 scale.
You don't see too many figures with an orange color scheme, so I like how these figures pair with one another. Skytube's Hazumi Oomune ITEM #464557 is a smallish 1/6 scale.
I really like how these two pair together. Alter's Chachamaru Ashikaga ITEM #603641 is 1/7 scale.
You've gotta love the short shorts over thong theme of both these figures!
These two figures depict characters designed by two of my favorite artists - Mataro and Satoshi Urushihara ENTRY #8343, and I like the similarity of their poses. CM's doesn't list a scale for Mineko Sudo ITEM #167409, but she is approximately 1/7 scale.
Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9.5/10
Arguments for: Many. The figure nicely duplicates the source illustration, the orange color scheme and her rough and tumble yet feminine appearance makes for a very eye-catching design, many display options, and the short shorts over thong look is...wow.
Arguments against: Not many. The fit of the figure's various swappable parts could have better, but maybe that's a tradeoff for having so many different display possibilities.
Overall, Skytube has delivered yet another winner here, and if you like Mataro's character designs, I'd recommend this figure with no reservations.
Availability (as of this writing)
Easy to find preowned.
This one seems pretty easy to find secondhand, but don't expect any huge pre-owned discounts.
It looks like 14000-15000 yen should net you one of these figures.
