EDIT: Thank you guys so much for letting me know all of this! I let my friend know and we think it's awesome that you guys helped us find out so much info about it. Thank you for all the funny pics of actual Mirage plushes! And thank you for sourcing the exact item! ITEM #633818

So I was talking to my friends about plushies and merch, and one of them stated that they had a pikachu that was "officially licensed bootleg merch" ... which got me really interested. Those words just should not go together. I asked him to post some pictures after he described it as "not fat" and "not long", and ... well, low and behold, I was not disappointed.

It appears to have an official tag and it says the following:

For amusement parks and travelling fairs only. The sale is forbidden.
©️ 2000 play by play toys & novelties. Valencia - Spain. All Rights Reserved
"the other side of the logo seems to have Play by Play's headquarters".

WHAT is this magical mysterious Pikachu merchandise?! I love this thing, it is so bizarre looking, I just have to know. He says his parents won it at some kind of carnival game. This is by far the strangest Pikachu I have ever seen, and I want to know ... is this legit merch? What is this? It is so bizarre???

Please also share any other weird Pikachu or weird merchandise you know of. I love this stuff.

KnighTalisman7 dias atrás#81235540I'd always wondered if the issue with a lot of the earlier plushes (such as my beloved ITEM #24313 which is old enough to drink this year) was that they were based on the sprite art as opposed to lineart?
Hi! I am no expert and of course, I was born after Pokemon became a hit. (2000's kid here) But according to the article I linked, the companies used the game sprites since there wasn't much artwork available at the time. That's the best I can answer for you.

P.S. That Squirtle plush you linked is very cute! You're a good parent for still having him. ^_^

LittlePisces8 dias atrás#81207146Oh my gosh, I was going to mention that Charmander example! He gets me everytime. XD
(responding to Gala) Like said by others, he does reminds of the Mirage plushies. I know it turns out he's by a different company, but the derpy style is similar. You can learn more from this blog on them. pkmncollectors....

Most likely legit. There are plenty of official plushes and other goods that aren't made to look like original or are just really cheaply made.

Being official just means they bought a license from copyright holder for it. Doesn't have anything to do with quality or being accurate.

In late 90' I bought a Pikachu mascot. I'm sure it is not legit but still cute :)

In 2000 my ex gave me a legit backpack with Pikachu but I don't have a pics to show this ;_;

Probably not real Merch they even say “sold in fairs and carnivals” so I bet you anything they got a company to make knockoffs to get around copyright issues but who knows
Does look legit though very legit so maybe it was the time in the 2000’s even the plushies looked different

I have a very rotund Pikachu that I got at a garage sale when I was a kid. Its butt tags are long gone, so I have no idea if it's official or a bootleg (it seems like the kind of thing you would win at a carnival in the 90s, but I've also seen official plush with similar features?). Here's a picture of it next to one of the official Pikachu plush i have.

It's so fat!! When I was younger I used to bounce it like a basketball, haha

Nemsy8 dias atrás#81206964I've seen this Pika quite a few times! He's definitely legit, but he's just one of those early plush that got passed without giving it too much thought. For example, some play by play plush look really wonky but are still legit: ITEM #633818, ITEM #881107, and ITEM #68392.
As far as him being a Mirage - he wouldn't be considered one, seeing as he was mass produced as a play by play plush to other countries. Mirage plush usually have less than a handful in existence, which is why they're called mirage plush. This Chansey and this Flareon are examples.

Are you sure that's not a knock off Clifford the Big Red Dog instead of Flareon XD it's amazingly bad

I've heard of Pokemon collectors calling these sorts of plushes "Mirage plushes"! They're usually from Europe and usually sold exclusively at carnivals and the like.
