Pimp My 3DS!

R_KasaharaR_Kasahara 4 anos atrásLoot
When the Nintendo 3DS was first announced, the two franchises I wanted to see on it the most debuted on the original DS: Etrian Odyssey and the Harvest Moon spinoff Rune Factory. Thus, when the fourth installments of both were (not unexpectedly) announced for the system, I waited for US-release announcements. Etrian Odyssey IV's came first, so that's when I decided to take the plunge at long last: I would get a 3DS.

Sure, there are other games for the system that I want to play, but those two were my absolute must-haves. Not long after preordering Etrian Odyssey IV, I picked up my first 3DS game, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked.

The original US DS release of the game was getting to be rare enough that the 3DS version would pay for itself if I sold my still-sealed copy of the former. Thus, I put my DS copy of Devil Survivor up for sale (it did sell, eventually) and got the newer 3DS version. I've since heard that the 3DS version's graphics aren't all that great, but it's too late now.

Then, Paper Mario: Sticker Star went on sale for $20.

I'd played all of the previous Mario RPGs and hybrid RPGs, so getting this at some point was a no-brainer, and at that price, I couldn't resist.

Not long after, Etrian Odyssey IV came out, and I got my copy with release-day shipping!

Welp, I thought, guess I finally better get that 3DS.

The main question that remained was which model to get: the original or the XL/LL. After doing a ton of hands-on and online research, I finally settled on the XL, and picked up a blue one and an AC adapter at a Best Buy that weekend.

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_04.jpg
Aside from the AC adapter, the one must-have accessory that I needed before I could use my new handheld was a set of Hori screen protectors. Best Buy didn't carry this specific item, so I ordered some from Amazon after getting home.

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_05.jpg
I thought I was done, but then I saw PIRATEPAPILLON's post about her shiny new Etrian Odyssey IV Dezaskin blog/6966 and remembered the clear case skins I have on my two DS Lites. These clear skins-- which cover the top, part of the bottom, and the areas with the controls-- had come in a set with screen protectors, but unfortunately, Hori doesn't currently make such things for 3DS XLs.

I set about searching for an alternative (including Dezaskins) and wound up browsing the 3DS XL accessories at Play-Asia, eventually placing an order there. While I waited on its arrival, I came across a nice solution to keep the control areas clean. On the downside, it required buying a skin for the whole system.

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_06.jpg
It was a matte Solid State Black skin from DecalGirl. Compared to what I had spent so far, it wasn't much :P

Then, some time later, I thought that I should get a bigger SD card for downloadable games and whatnot, since the one that comes with the 3DS only holds 4GB. That led to my next purchase.

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_07.jpg
So, now I had games, the system, an AC adapter, some protectors, and a 32GB SDHC card. However, I was not done yet.

The Play-Asia order took awhile to get here. Not only did I have it sent via registered economy shipping, but one item was backordered to such an extent that I had no idea when they would get any in. Finally, they shipped out what they could and continued to wait on that one item, which they got in only a few days later!

The first package, with the bulk of the order, arrived in early April.

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_08.jpg
It contained a clear Yawakata cover, an accessory pack (which I mainly got for the other stuff, but what the hey, more screen protectors!), and something I didn't originally think I'd get: an official Nintendo charging cradle.

Finally, the last item arrived: a carrying case!

http://www.blueshinra.com/temp/blogs/3ds-stuff/3ds-stuff_09.jpg
It's a Possum Shoulder Bag with a Boo on it. Sure, it's somewhat geeky, what with the Mario-themed graphics, but out of the other cases I looked at, it was my favorite. I especially like that it comes with a shoulder strap.

So, that's it-- my huge 3DS haul, compiled over the course of a few months. I currently have two other games preordered (Rune Factory 4, of course, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers) and am eyeing even more, though my regular DS backlog is begging me not to.

For now, I want to beat Tales of the Abyss on PS2, which it seems like I've been playing for ages and am finally near the end of, then jump into some dungeon crawling with Etrian Odyseey IV.

Not to bombard this thread for my own personal gain, but did you happen to use the decal for the screen area? If not, would you be willing to part with it?
Getting the Zelda 3DS XL, and the inside gold around the screen is the only part that bothers me, so blocking it with a black matte decal is a hopeful option.

Got my XL back from Nintendo late last week; the dead pixel issue's all taken care of. Unfortunately, I had already used the DecalGirl skin for the buttons, and they stretched out a little when I removed them before shipping the system off, so I bought two new ones (one as a backup :P).

Was planning on setting up all the protectors, etc. today, but I'm really tired; I barely got any sleep last night.

ETA: Started to do all that yesterday afternoon, but the XL I got back is in even worse shape than the one I sent in o_o;;; There were more dead pixels on the top screen, some strange white line on the touchscreen, and a scratch on the bottom part of the outer case. Put in another repair request, but had to set it up over the phone this time. Hope this one goes better...

iTiffany (4 anos atrás) #1468606This is a pretty neat haul. But having a blue colored 3DS seems kinda pointless now since the skins probably cover up the console pretty good.
As I implied, I'm not going to be using the matte black skin on the outside (I only got it for the parts to cover the button area, which is also black), but the clear cover. Besides, it's not like I didn't have to choose a color in the first place!

R_Kasahara (4 anos atrás) #1454649One of my pets is a rabbit... enough said, right? The other is a cat who sometimes resorts to chewing on wires when he wants attention. We have a DS Lite charger which is patched up with electrical tape, and several others besides.
How far do chinchillas jump? Fortunately, rabbits have furry paw pads, so they don't do well on slick surfaces... otherwise there'd be a lot more chewed-on stuff around here D:

Hee, bunnies sure are chewers, yup. Sounds like you'll need that spare sooner or later!
I've seen him do four foot, so pretty high. The really crafty thing they do is wall jump, he can get to the top of my bookcase by kicking off from the wall next to it and going up each shelf like that. Which why I'm switching to digital books. XD

Pretty :D

Amphy64 (4 anos atrás) #1454609I would keep the spare if your pets are anything like mine. My chinchilla chewed up my DS charger, and the wire for connecting my PS3 to my TV (weren't plugged in, and I thought they were out of reach, but...chinchillas jump).

LadyStarstorm (4 anos atrás) #1454623Very nice! My 3DS XL is currently at Nintendo for repairs (I'm paying close to retail for it orz) since it experienced water damage (a water bottle came open in my very-durable tote bag, so it pooled up instead of seeping out the bag itself.... T_T) but it was not very pimped!!
Thanks! And speaking of which, I found a dead pixel on mine when I was dusting the screens in preparation for putting on the screen protectors, so I'm shipping it off to Nintendo today. EO4 will have to come later ;_;

LadyStarstorm (4 anos atrás) #1454623The extent of pimping mine has gotten is my UtaPri Debut Ren strap pt.myfigurecoll... but, if I'm being honest, it more often than not just gets in my way while I'm holding it so I might just leave it off... I wish the cell-strap spot was at the top somewhere rather than the bottom!
Been thinking of putting a strap or two on mine, but yeah, I'm worried about them getting in the way :/

Great way of putting it ;) Besides that, they're my two favorite communities.

Love my 3DS XL and Vita. Hope you enjoy yours as well.

R_Kasahara (4 anos atrás) #1453405A couple people also pointed this out at CAG today. I bought it thinking it didn't.

I wish the cell-strap spot was at the top somewhere rather than the bottom! I'd love to decorate it with a skin or stickers, but I am always hesitant to adhere things to my electronics in fear that they won't come off cleanly if I ever decide I don't like them anymore.

Before it was so cruelly taken from me, I was in the middle of Fire Emblem Awakening, and HarmoKnight! Both are really wonderful. I've never been into the Fire Emblem series, the perma-death was always a big turnoff when I already wasn't a big fan of strategy RPGs, but the casual mode makes this installment way more accessible. Plus, having a customizable MC is a huge boon for me.

I have a decent case I got from Amazon, www.amazon.com/..., it was dirt cheap and at the time I bought it was the only reasonable-cost hard-shell type case for the XL. It is NOT WATERPROOF THOUGH!! Important point which I have learned. >_>;;;; It looks like Hori has come out with one since then, though, so I bet that's nicer.

I really want to get Etrian Odyssey though.. I've heard nothing but praise for it!

The 3DS is a great little console, I think it'll end up with as good a library as the original DS. So far I have for it:
Nintendogs + Cats (cuteness)
Zelda: OoT 3D
Tales of the Abyss (which, as you can probably guess, I absolutely love. Finish it! : ) )
Luigi's Mansion 2 (currently playing, it's a lot of fun)
and getting Fire Emblem Awakening when it finally releases here next week.

Like the boo case! I've been meaning to get a proper case for my 3DS too, though it'll need to be one for the original model. As far as accessories go, I just have ITEM #72941 attached to it.

R_Kasahara (4 anos atrás) #1453405I might keep the spare, especially since our two pets sometimes chew things that aren't theirs (such as wires), but I still feel like a huge dumbass right now >_<;

About this blog

I don't write blog posts here as often as I should, but at least I'm writing at all!

Posts here generally concern figures and other collectables. For reviews, I often like to highlight items which may have gone overlooked, or are otherwise interesting. In general, I strive for high-quality posts above all else.

I also maintain a blog here which is mostly about video games, and sometimes about manga and anime.
