  • Everything around me is going up while wages stay the same so I'm kind of numb to it.

Back in 2015 Freeing Bunny Figures Binned for 50% off 2 months after release. Bought one for 11k back then. Nowadays you pay 50%+ more 2 months after release and 50% more baseline. xD

I've been collecting for about a decade now, and while I mainly collect action figures rather than scales, it's been crazy seeing the cost of a Figma soar from around $40 shipped from Amiami in 2013-2014 to near or sometimes over $100. The kicker being you're usually getting less accessories at these increased prices. I haven't bought any since completing my Phantom Thieves and probably won't unless they release a Kasumi. Figuarts has had a more gradual climb from about $35-40 in 2011 to about $65 now, but they've been creeping up too since nearly every DBZ release started becoming exclusive to Premium Bandai in 2020.

As far as scales, I was collecting the Digimon G.E.M line and it basically imploded thanks to them practically doubling the prices in the span of a year, leaving us with several incomplete teams. Funny thing is, even though I've got way more disposable income then I did when I started in my teens, I just find fewer and fewer figures are worth the asking price.

Honestly a lot of people I’ve discussed this with have told me that as of late especially with the pandemic, a lot of people have picked up this hobby. A lot of companies especially one with a famous b-style line has also conceded to the fact that buyers will buy any bunny girl with any boring pose as long as it’s 1/4th and looks decent, at whatever price.

New collectors might not know better and also give into super high prices, letting sellers know it’s “ok” to sell for this price or higher. With an influx of new buyers who can do whatever with their wallet, it kind of drives everything into the overpriced category…even if this hadn’t happened, prices were slowly increasing over time with the same or worse quality. The pandemic just made everything more expensive. (Manufacturing wise, too…)

I think it’s truly the worst time to get into figure collecting, but with everything opening back up I can see prices going down more.

Pre-pandemic, the “10 count” bunny boys were $80 each. Now? $300…each. It’s kind of a nightmare

If 30k becomes the norm for new pre orders. I will just stick with pre own scales or pre orders on Chinese brand figures for exmaple like mythoes, and maybe stick with buying nendos.

I started collecting on 2019, but I saw that so many scales those are pretty cheap but then see 100 dollars I be like "WHAT?! SO EXPENSIVE!"
    .
And then there's 200+. Gotta go I gave up with scales lol

Yeah, it's a lot. Like 20k for a figure used to be rare and be for those fancier figures, now that's getting closer to being more common. We are now also more commonly leaning into the 30k range. Would be fine if it meant an increase in quality. But it really hasn't. Like yeah this is a luxury as a hobby, but it still bothers me because I'd rather not be priced out of it lol. It's something I enjoy and would like to keep doing. I'm still fine at the moment, but it's hard to ignore the price jumps we've seen.

LOL has it really become that bad that even people who started collecting since 2018 - 2019 are complaining?

    I miss the 2012 - 2013 anime figure market.

I'm kind of late to the hobby and I have only experienced the recent prices. Right now I think the prices for 1/7 scales are fine. However it's the 1/4 Bunnies that seem to have ridiculous prices even in my short time of collecting I have noticed the prices creep up a lot. I'm stil debating if I want to preorder ITEM #1213421 or not. I don't understand how people can collect so many bunny girls, people say they are addicting but are they really when they cost this much?

I completely agree with you on your opinion as to why the prices increased. I say this whenever I can: You're being taken advantage of by the companies because they've learned you'll throw your money at anything and justify it. The culture of preordering figures is incredibly harmful to the consumer because you're paying before you even see the final product. There's no incentive for companies to maintain quality standards if the customers aren't going to hold them to it.
