amalthea (1 ano atrás) #37315648It should be noted that the Elfen Lied manga has *finally* been licensed for an English release next year (will be 14 years after the manga ended in Japan). Depending on the sales that may boost some interest in a revival for merchandise for the series.

Pyrolover90 (1 ano atrás) #37222309Elfen Lied is incredibly obscure in Japan, making it hard to sell merch for over there and for a lot of manufacturers back in 2008 (or, hell, even today), if it doesn't sell well on the homefront, they consider it too big of a risk to spend money on. It's only in the past couple of years that overseas interest has started to factor into some manufacturer's sales, and even then, it's still not enough for most of them. Making these figures was pretty much a gamble by Wave as they had no way of telling how many people would buy them. Since Elfen Lied is a lot more popular in Western countries than in Japan, their limited sales boosted their worth overseas, so what few figures do exist are very, very, very, very rarely sold as their owners don't want to give them up (myself included).

Interesting that it wasn't popular in its home country but became something of a cult favorite abroad. I suppose that happens once in a while with other anime too (Vision of Escaflowne became really popular internationally, not so much in Japan).

amalthea (1 ano atrás) #36816038Why did this figure become so elusive to start with? Was it extremely limited edition or something? Whenever the figure shows up now it's rare to see under $1,000.
As far as I know it's the only official Lucy/Nyuu figure on the market, so that might be part of it. Surprised Kotobukiya or another company hasn't made a new one of her. For an older manga/anime Lucy is still pretty well-known and popular.

Pretty sure the license is really hard to get. I remember reading somewhere about them not budging about it... but it's been a few years I can't say that with confidence. I wish they would do a re-release or atleast make a new Lucy/Nyuu but I feel it's near 0 chance. They were sold out in Japan on release within a week so I think there was a limited quantity Pre-Order. Prices went up 10x within a few months after release.

Unfortunate that the aftermarket for these skyrocketed so much, but I guess it's demand is much greater than it's quantity, it sells for what people will buy it for. I really just want Nyu alone.

I used to own the pair 3 times, had to part with them due to health issues. Are they worth $900.. no as far as quality and what you are actually buying. Such small figures at a high price is pretty insane. The quality and paint job is mediocre. BUT For personal and sentimental reasons absolutely worth.
